when i get home I'll email you a list of what i've got; I am totalyl down mr JC.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:14 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I'm not with Jay Hinman when he says that they're not great in retrospect. I still like them. That said, I haven't listened to one of their records in years now and have not heard the last couple of albums. (I'm interested in them, though.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:19 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

personally, i think the Dead C are one of the great bands -- and one of the few to convincingly combine rock elements with more out elements like drone, etc. plus, they just push the primal buttons inside of my head whenever i listen to them (though that has to be in my car or when my girlfriend is away since the Dead C drive her apeshit with hatred for them).

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:22 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

"helen said this" is one of the greatest songs i've ever heard.

heh, i last saw the dead c. with jack cole, his girlfriend, and the mayo apetrain.

Opinions on the last two albums from any NOIZERS?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:58 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

i haven't heard them... :-\ jack cole has though.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 September 2004 16:04 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Is the dbl cd one of the last two? I lose track.. but that one's good. There's one 30 minute or so song on the first disc that pwnz the long-form songs on Tusk...

Ornette coleman playing fiddle with them is pretty much my dream record.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:48 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

last two albums, swing back towards short pieces -- more "rock" structure (the term used loosely). love them both though there was some controversy over some of the stuff on the last album if it actually was the dead c and not accidentally stuff from gate.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:27 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

"Accidentally?"

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:58 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

check out the dead c list on yahoo for full details. the argument was over if there was mix up in tapes. i believe that gate tapes werent used from the sound.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:00 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

how come i was never approved to get on the dead c list on yahoo those sheep-fux0rz.

I basically lost touch with these guys after the live thing (wait, was that Tusk or Repent? I forget.) Weird, too, because I worshipped them in the mid-90s. That live disc was kind of crap though. I thought Operation of the Sonne / The White House was just a magnificient pair of records though. Kind of like the real endpoint of post-Sonic Youth rock deconstruction, like the END OF ROCK MUSIC ITSELF. It seemed like everything they had released up to that point was sort of working towards those two records, getting progressively more extended and improvised and whited out. I dunno, after that it just felt like a NEW DEAD C RECORD wasn't as exciting.

But that's just me, and how I felt at the time. I'd like to hear those most recent self-released discs. But I guess they are already a bit scarce.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:26 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

'the damned' is fairly available rob.

'repent' was their live record and I thought it to be really gd but I don't listen to it as much as some of the others.

I should re-listen to some of these soon.

what of this band should I buy first?

does that make you want to touch yourself? (nordicskilla), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:02 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

adam start with more song oriented stuff.
get either eusa kills or that comp of the early stuff flying nun put out. after that definitely harsh 70s reality.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:28 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

harsh 70'Z

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:29 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

eusa kills is pretty hard to find, but scoop it up if you do. it's more rocktacular.

Harsh 70s Reality or Trapdoor Fucking Exit are good starting choices.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:40 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

i've never heard them! 'harsh 70s reality' is an excellent album title though

Amon (eman), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:12 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

dr503c ("bad politics"! "sun stabbed"!) or harsh 70s reality. BR screaming "sold my arse to see the sky" on (almost) primetime nz music teevee was pretty sweet.

they're still pretty good live!

etc (esskay), Friday, 8 April 2005 08:09 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

SK that was MM! You mean on GROUND ZERO, right? That was a fucking amazing thing, yes. I saw it LIVE, I was really stoned too. Noone's mentioned "Clyma Est Mort" or "Dead C vs Sebadoh", I like those ones too. Start w/Eusa if possible sure.

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:19 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

it's cute more than anything, really. the small size means they're basically stick figures, but weird boys go nuts over it. we're on opposite continents at the moment, so i'm not sure about getting a photo and i don't know that i want to ask her to put one up here.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:24 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

Talking of weird boys me and my best friend spotted you correctly on the first DFA comp, big deal tho

In all honesty you weren't hard to spot (there were like 3 girls at most in the pics I think), also um

http://adhoc.fm/post/track-premiere-gate/

New Zealander Michael Morley (notably a member of The Dead C) is set to drop his latest work with his solo project Gate. Saturday Night Fever is a reinterpretation of the music from the movie of that name, expanding on the ideas about dance music that Morley established on Gate’s 2010 LP A Republic of Sadness. As fellow noise-guy-turned-dance-enthusiast Pete Swanson puts it: “The resulting album sounds like Morley's pulling out some heaping doses of the hermit boogie and Otago funk and stretching it into some sort of Basinskian disintegration loop gone Bernard Bonnier zonked mutant scene.” The opening track from Saturday Night Fever, a beast of a piece called “Asset,” starts out as a pseudo-disco track with sampled horns and turns into something more like what you’d expect from the hands behind the feedback-drenched and claustrophobic songs of The Dead C. Throw this onto your noise show after-party playlist because it’s the coolest disco is ever going to get.
