that slogan sounds like an old jewish man talking, "grunt style? nu, this we'll defend."

yom hazikaron today -- memorial days are kinda non-partisan no?

Mordy, Monday, 15 April 2013 13:48 (thirteen years ago)

The military-oriented aspect of Israel's culture is pretty conservative. Not that it's entirely without reason, but the image still fits the thread imo.

I mean, Israel can more legitimately claim that soldiers in the six day war "died for your freedom" or whatever than America regarding soldiers in Iraq, but still

--808 542137 (Hurting 2), Monday, 15 April 2013 13:52 (thirteen years ago)

idk, would a similar painting of US soldiers fighting in WW2 to protect "your freedom" be conservative? maybe it would!

Mordy, Monday, 15 April 2013 13:55 (thirteen years ago)

kinda

zero dark (s1ocki), Monday, 15 April 2013 13:59 (thirteen years ago)

on one hand i do understand that but i can't help but feel like making the violence that constructs society explicit is radical too - which is maybe why memorial day in the US is basically invisible?

Mordy, Monday, 15 April 2013 14:01 (thirteen years ago)

ya i guess you could read that image in the totally opposite way too, good point

zero dark (s1ocki), Monday, 15 April 2013 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

though i'd like to see some workers/oppressed ppl in there too

zero dark (s1ocki), Monday, 15 April 2013 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

I sort of regret posting that one having not immediately realized it was yom hazikaron. This is an interesting topic though.

kinda has a Mad Fold-In qual

andrew m., Monday, 15 April 2013 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

the text is something about how "thousands died for this" and when you fold it it's a picture of a pita sandwich with shawarma

--808 542137 (Hurting 2), Monday, 15 April 2013 14:48 (thirteen years ago)

i've seen that pic before. i don't know its origin but i reaaaally don't think its creator had defense of israel in mind

goole, Monday, 15 April 2013 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

Why are you slandering the brave soldiers who defended Israel during World War I?

pplains, Monday, 15 April 2013 14:52 (thirteen years ago)

Actually Israeli soldiers did wear helmets like that during the 1948 independence war. I assumed it was the beach in tel aviv. Although the choice of a blonde woman would be unusual.

--808 542137 (Hurting 2), Monday, 15 April 2013 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

well like i said i don't know where it came from.

how i ran into it before detailed here:

why do i hate that artist thing that people keep posting on my facebook so much? why am i such a jerk?

goole, Monday, 15 April 2013 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

there are spots on the coast where you look north toward yafo that look sort of like that, all though the style of building in that picture is not what's there today (taller more modern buildings). The architecture plus lack of any specific jewish/israeli signifiers makes me think you're probably right.

reverse img search is inconclusive

huge link

goole, Monday, 15 April 2013 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

I used a few other words to image search it ("Artist", "Originally painted") and let me tell you, adding captions to that picture only makes it even more annoying.

that works if you consider the rights of a clump of cells to be more important than a living, breathing woman

Slavery was endorsed morally by those who saw it sanctioned in the Bible, the White man doing his duty to tame the witchdoctor and teach him the Words of Christ.

pplains, Thursday, 2 May 2013 02:54 (thirteen years ago)

any given moral is the equivalent of any and all other morals by the simple fact of its adoption as a moral. i am vehemently opposed to banjos, on moral grounds; when will the federal government do something? i didn't not vote just for the children i don't have to hear mumford and sons on the goddamn radio i don't own before 9pm.
