they filmed a bunch of leatherheads in my hometown. there is a very funny but kind of pathetic nytimes article about the extras trying to be important.

Wow, that article has all kinds of crazy in it.

“We had a re-enactment of the cemetery scene last year,” said Tom Whitehead, a retired journalism professor in Natchitoches, La., speaking of his town’s enduring attachment to the movie “Steel Magnolias,” which was shot there two decades ago.

TWO DECADES AGO!!!

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

Also the fact that they are re-enacting a scene from a movie... it just seems a lot weirder, than, I don't know, historical re-enactments or whatever.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

my favorite was "At least seven limousines will shuttle guests from the parking lot so they can arrive at the Camelot Cinemas in style."

SEVEN WHOLE LIMOUSINES OMG

tehresa, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

lol, it is a FLEET of limousines!!!

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:31 (eighteen years ago)

Or I guess it is if your town is small enough.

(I should talk! But it seems like a lot of people rented limos for prom in Hastings - surely more than seven... and Hastings is many things, but a big city is is not)

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:32 (eighteen years ago)

yeah w/ all the sprawl it's actually not THAT small, which is why the sentence is so silly, making it sound like 'woah hueg 7 limos!'

tehresa, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:33 (eighteen years ago)

I have never had the chance to be an extra, but I'm starting to think this is probably good because apparently it could distort my sense of reality. (Which, let's face it, is askew anyway.)

I'm also puzzling over them using S.C. to stand in for Duluth, MN, but I've never been to S.C. so maybe it makes all kinds of sense and I just don't know it. (?!)

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

Beautiful Costa Mesa, California, to stand in for Des Moines.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

the football fields all probably look similar? i dunno about what the town of duluth looks like, though. i'm gonna have to see this movie now to watch for familiar spots.

tehresa, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

so is article saying that ppl are gonna drive to the theater and then a limo will pick them up by their car and take them to the theater entrance? that would explain why only 7 and the word 'shuttle' duh...

tehresa, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:43 (eighteen years ago)

way to be green, greenville!!

tehresa, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:43 (eighteen years ago)

...maybe all football fields look the same? (Although ND had the distinctive "Touchdown Jesus" mosaic that used to be visible through the goalposts, so maybe not).

xpost Your interpretation of what is going on in Greenville w/the limos may very well be the case. (Are your parents there? Can they investigate?)

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:47 (eighteen years ago)

I have just printed out a pile of 10,000 pieces of paper for nursing school and I still have a ton left. SO NOT GREEN

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:48 (eighteen years ago)

it was actually on the 4th oops! and they are in florida atm. i will check local news websites! ON THE CASE!

tehresa, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

THE MYSTERY MUST BE SOLVED

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

ok this was not a very long investigation!

http://www.wyff4.com/video_legacy/15800129/index.html

tons of gems on that page, also a whole video about places featured in the film so maybe you can tell me if they look like duluth?

tehresa, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

lol this is reminding me how they like to think they are 'metropolitan'

i can laugh bc i know i'll never live there again.

tehresa, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:57 (eighteen years ago)

Oh gosh you're fast. I will take a look!

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 05:58 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, it did not look a lot like Duluth to me, but when I think of Duluth I usually think of Lake Superior and the views of that... maybe the downtown/buildings look similar to Greenville.

I was in Duluth in 2004 when my husband ran his first marathon, and I have to admit that I was not looking carefully at the buildings.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

that was not actually greenville... it was the old downtown of one of the suburbs, which is generally totally dead, though they've tried to go for the 'historic restoration' crap in the past few years. when i was a kid, it was like ghost town. where i'm from, there is 'downtown greenville' which is pretty small but more of a 'city', and then lots of suburbs whose old downtowns are kind of dead but are surrounded by tons of sprawl and subdivisions and grocery store shopping plazas. i think total area population is about 300,000.

tehresa, Sunday, 6 April 2008 06:09 (eighteen years ago)

Oh - it sounds like it is bigger than I thought at first.

You should have gone home for that movie opening. THE EXCITEMENT ;)

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 06:15 (eighteen years ago)

My husband, who grew up with no television and has consequently not been exposed to many music videos of the 80's, is catching up on them right now and marveling over Jon Bon Jovi and David Lee Roth's hair.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 6 April 2008 06:16 (eighteen years ago)

Saturday night excitement here for sure!
