OH AND THANK YOU R.R.

When you move to the Bay Area, allow me to offer this one bit of advice:

When folks who live there offer to hug you upon meeting you, go right.

"It's heart to heart, not liver to liver."

^This has been said to me, in earnest, in my westward travels.

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 03:47 (eighteen years ago)

what are you studying?

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 03:47 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a film student in Chicago at a film school (Columbia) famous for it's ability to turn out hardworking crew that have some rudimentary understanding of film theory.

However, thanks to some Christmas break friend of a friend introduction action, I spend at least half of my week 300 miles south of Chicago with my new but pretty great ladyfriend. So, y'know, I stay true to my rural collage town roots.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

my bf's family lives in chicago - northbrook, i think?

300 miles! she must be pretty awesome! ;)

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

300 miles holy shit. Is that going to change soon? How do you get there?

wilter, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

Northbrook is a suburb, and we who live in the city limits find it is v. insulting when urban sprawl encouragers call themselves Chicagoans. However, even though I've lived here for two years, I've developed exactly zero attachment to the place, so I'll reserve judgment.

And yeah, she's pretty impressive. I'd have failed out of school by now if it weren't for her perfect balancing of assignment-finishing prodding and "oh well, fuck it, if you don't graduate, we'll just buy a really cheap house my friend is trying to sell" escapism.

I only have (absolute worst case scenario) eight months left (if I prove to be even somewhat of a worthwhile human being, five months) until I get my degree... I don't know where this is going.

We bought some pretty bitchin' records in Austin, TX over Spring Break, that's the important part.

Less important is the large, pre-signed check for the total charges incurred over SB I've promised said lady.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

Did I mention I drank a fair amount of Charles Shaw's delicious "gettcha drunk real cheap" wine?

en i see kay, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

wilter: most weeks by the perrenially late but easy to sleep on amtrak, some weeks when I have homework that involves heavy lighting equipment by a car that wants to die SO HARD. It'll end, with luck and the grace of OUR DEAR LORD JESUS (been reading Left Behind as a lark) in August, when we'll move to Portland, OR, and I'll get a job as a Certified Pharmacy Tech.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

But OH SHIT, my certification ran out today, I'll have to reapply.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

Thankfully, this is a test whose hardest question is:

WHICH OF THESE DOESN'T REDUCE A FEVER:

A) Acetaminophen
B) Ibuprofen
C) Any antipyretic
D) MAGICAL SWAN EGGS

See, spreadsheets as homework seem to me, in this my senior year of a liberal arts education, like they'd be so very, very wonderful.

"What's that? As long as you do the requisite calculations and good ol' Hard Work, it's sure to be right? Your work isn't graded on a scale that has more to to with empirical evidence than your instructor"s experience trying to sell his film crit to the Tribune? AMAZING"

I'm sure it's the exact opposite to an equal degree on the other side of the fence, though.

R.R. Actually, if you're in California, and market forces haven't changed, you'll have access to the lovely Two-Buck Chuck! Charles Shaw is the name attached to this winery that has made quite a mint selling its mass produced and distributed through Trader Joe's but still rather palatable wine. If you live outside of the Golden State, if I'm not wrong, you have to pay an extra "Not living in God's chose paradise" dollar importation fee.

Just the same, it's Cabernet Sauvignon that isn't at all offensive to the senses that costs in most parts of the country $3 a bottle. Can't beat that.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

Tombot you lovable bastard, I have more than 48 hours to complete my assigments for this week, I'm practically in the clear!

en i see kay, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

i have heard of this two buck chuck! well, i will be in CA a few months (ALLAH WILLING, OF COURSE). although, after last week's wine-tainted night out, i'm sticking to vodka for awhile.

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

i am so done witth that crap for tonight. anyway, the spreadsheets are painstaking and awful, and based on total bull/crazy schemes of this insane software salesman who thinks he's a marketer who really only seems to care if you can link a bunch of shit together. the actual content doesn't seem to matter to him, which kind of angers me, because when i am doing this for a living people are REALLY gonna care about that content. and it's all based on a totally antiquated sales model. anyway... whatever. i decided it doesn't matter much because when i turn in the final it will be on paper and no one will be able to see the formulas anyway. HAH!!

ruby i am only 1/2 way through with my second of 4 semesters.
definitely go for the budget chuck when you're in teh states! i wish i had some now.

tehresa, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 05:13 (eighteen years ago)

I wouldn't be posting this much if I hadn't realized that the stats are going to reset soon (tomorrow) and that ONCE JUST THIS ONCE I'll be in the top posters stats after six years of reading and being culturally influenced by your collective music/food/consumerist whore recommendations.

I say this with v. deep love, btw.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 05:13 (eighteen years ago)

i never handed in anything less than 2 weeks late, sometimes up to 6 weeks late. but that was the joy of doing an english lit/reli studies degree - no one gives a flying fuck.

Oh, how I wish I had a curriculum with such a policy!

In Columbia's attempt to produce WELL-ROUNDED ADULTS, there is a mandate from on high to accept NO late assignments, and to punish those who miss more than 15% of class sessions with FAILURE.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

technically, there was supposed to be an average of 2% p/day penalties for lateness, a fail for showing up to less than 8/11 tutorials, and a fail for not handing in every piece of written work. i did not comply with these rules many a time and i still got a majority of As and a few Bs (just one C, plus about a million Es for all the classes i dropped out of). universities are businesses who want your money, and they'll keep taking it by letting you slide through (here in nz, anyway).

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

That's probably true here too, but I'm a dirty Introvert, and find withdrawing (if timely enough) or failing so very preferable to fighting for my individual cause.

I'll probably fail miserably in this society of ours, or perhaps flourish on the backs of the wonderful extroverted few I've managed to convince that I'm worthwhile.

Alright, really, that's the fifth time my cigarette has fallen to the ground from the ashtray. Practical advice from those who find it simple, nay, imperative to cut through any societal bullshit in order to thrive is def. welcomed. Also, those who don't drink heavily on a Monday night. CAN YOU HELP?

I'm looking at you, Tom.

Wait, this'll go on the ASK TOMBOT thread, even if I am deeply afraid (for some reason) of being hardsonned by J-Dubs on my lack of HAXX0R SKILLZ if I post on noise bored.

estela, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, I was cleaning house last night and was therefore unavailable for mollification. I'm sure John and Sara are currently passed out on a snowdrift in St. Paul.

To our newest poster: your porn escapades astound and amaze. WELCOME

Today's mission is to take the following source URL:

...and link it to as many places as you can. (Bonus points if you re: tinyurl it to disguise it from more savvy clickers.)

HI DERE, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

I AM ALIVE.

Thanks to John and Caledonia.

They put me up on their couch; no one slept in a snowdrift (unless John got into a snowdrift after I left, for which I cannot be held responsible). I also did not have to kick a mannequin out of its pretend hospital bed, so I was saved from many potential horrible fates.

I'm going to take a nap now, since I think the last time I sat up so late talking I lived in a dorm room. (Not to worry, Dan, not tooooo many stories were told about you.)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

No snowdrift?????

DISAPPOINTED

HI DERE, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

suzy, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

i went with the close tab panic stab at ok button option

John Justen, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

xpost to Dan - well, if it makes you feel any better, my class wound up having to go outside because the fire alarm went off. Apparently some St. K student cannot correctly cook a pizza. So lots of students were standing NEAR snowdrifts while being snowed on at about 9 p.m. last night. INCLUDING ME
