i like the cut of your jape.

ccd wasn't fun, it was dismal.

estela, Friday, 21 March 2008 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

I am glad to know what a jib is, at last.

In HSTNGS, our CCD was on Saturday mornings during grade school (lame) and later on Wednesday evenings for jr. and sr. high (conflicted with ballet classes often). And it was NOT fun; it was boring. Except for the year where they taught all about sex and why you should not have it. That was sort of interesting.

My favorite ever CCD class discussed how, if you have sex before you're married, you'll be a "half Christmas tree."

I defy anyone to make sense of that metaphor.

Sara R-C, Friday, 21 March 2008 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

PS I think that was the year I thought, YEAH, I WANT TO BE A HALF CHRISTMAS TREE.

Sara R-C, Friday, 21 March 2008 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

dammit, I really can't deal with BBcode, can I.

Sara R-C, Friday, 21 March 2008 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

i might have told this story once already.

when i was in sixth grade, my teacher stood up one wednesday noon and dismissed everybody who attended CCD for a special field trip to a nearby abbey. there were twenty-four kids in my classroom. twenty-two of them went.

i did not. neither did m. monahan. m. monahan had down syndrome. i felt very sad that i was not invited, but at least i had m. monahan for company.

until the teacher gently reminded him he was supposed to go, because he was a catholic -- didn't he remember the cross at his neck?

remy bean, Friday, 21 March 2008 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

That's awful! They should have politely invited you along at least...

Sara R-C, Friday, 21 March 2008 04:46 (eighteen years ago)

i am sort of glad they didn't, actually, because i probably would have wanted to become a monk. i was very, very impressionable.

remy bean, Friday, 21 March 2008 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

remy, you sound like you would have been so charming to be around.

Also, I still envy monks and nuns a bit since their lives sound really peaceful and calm. I know that I would hate it, but it does have a certain simple appeal.

Sara R-C, Friday, 21 March 2008 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

a lot of things have that kind of false appeal, they sound nice described in a sentence but would be hard to stand.

Sara R-C, Friday, 21 March 2008 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, all the Sisters thread revivals have prompted this amazing set of stories on this thread about the roommate of RabiesAnGentlemen:

A friend of mine made a conscious decision at the age of 23 or so to go through a goth phase and got a Sisters Of Mercy tattoo.

I made a joke about him going through conscious phases at certain ages -- 24, dipsomania, 25, rehab, and the response:

You're on the right trail. He hasn't got to the rehabilitation phase yet, though sometimes when he's drinking weird Brittany Spears concoctions I urge him to do so (gastric bypass, not safe). But he's always pulling this stuff. For a while he wouldn't stop talking about his denim cape. Then it was his kilt. Then it was "all my friends' wives and girlfriends want to fuck me." He still brings an animal horn of some kind to the bars to drink from instead of the little plastic cups.

Just months before the goth phase he was telling me "I could never get into the Cure because they invented goth! Like six months or a year later he was dumped and listening to the Cure really loud in our living room. Awk-ward!

I...I must know more. But from this safe distance.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 March 2008 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

The snow is not falling as hard. I am hard-boiling vast numbers of eggs while reading Sisters of Mercy threads and listening to them via youtube.
Meanwhile, J is appealing to me for a game of chess (not that she has a clue how to play).

Sara R-C, Friday, 21 March 2008 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

xpost Okay the animal horn thing is REALLY pushing the bounds of eccentricity.

Sara R-C, Friday, 21 March 2008 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, YOU live in Minnesota, doesn't most of the state claim they're descended from Horst and Thor, the Viking buddies?
