I would choose SF because it is awesome.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

full-time writing is lately becoming the kind of job you do from home anyway, the phone shlubs and nightly rewrite gang are the folks who have to show up in the office anymore, right?

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

if you were big into sports or videogames you could do full-time writing from just about anywhere

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

the food in SF is okay, not awesome.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

DC is rapidly becoming an awesome food city (which it has been but mostly for a limited range of regional things, now you can get practically anything, see I DIED picture bloggityblog etc)

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

full-time writing job in one of those places ... probably rules out seattle

why is this?

lxy, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

(last month i applied for a job at double fine / full throttle)

i actually prefer the food in la to sf, but mostly because i know where it is

remy bean, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

lxy,

i have heard seattle does not offer that many (non-journalistic) writing opportunities?

remy bean, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

There's fucking fantastic food in Boston but I would be very very wary of recommending it as a place to live.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, after my brief stint in somerville ...

remy bean, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, cool news Remy. I'd say SF or back here, but I would. As for writing opportunities in Seattle, let me ask when I'm there.

Writing game, from one vaguely in the know -- easy enough even to do from a soulless place like, oh, I dunno, Orange County, but face to face schmoozing with agents doubtless has its virtues. As it is most of the writing work I've gotten has been from out of the blue, so sometimes it's just a matter of 'presence,' in my case online.

Meantime, for everyone's enjoyment -- the sender of a mail to me today, based on how my account's web interface shortened it:

"National Eagle Scout Ass."

Doubtless.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

I wouldn't recommend Boston because of the retarded-ass health insurance law.

jessie monster, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

if i move to the east coast, i will probably end up back in pvd (and possibly rooming with arthur)

remy bean, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

i can parse that in many amusing ways xxpost

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

-- El Tomboto,

We will never see eye to eye, Tom. ;_;

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

xpost -- And you will.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

I should also say that I received this mail because I am in fact an honest to god Eagle Scout. Therefore I presumably possess...well, anyway.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

hmm... maybe you're right, remy. that would explain why i haven't been able to ditch my shitty state university job for a better writing gig in the private sector. it's nice to have something to blame besides, you know, myself.

lxy, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

Eh, I find my state university job (non-shitty, happily) gives me the chance to write more because I'm not carrying any work home from work -- and because it doesn't make work at home seem like that, because it's not like I'm working all day on writing. *shrug* Mileage, variance, etc.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

YAY my See's Candy order just arrived. The kids will have chocolate bunnies, etc. for Easter!!!! Also - scotchmallow eggs for me. YUM

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

does scotchmallow have real scotch in it?

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

Sadly for you, no.

It's honeyed marshmallow and caramel covered in dark chocolate. It sounds like it would be too sweet, but it is not.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

Sara will you shot See's details for me so I can fwd to mother plz? Most popular Xmas refrain this year was GET YOUR HANDS OFF THAT BOX OF CANDY IT WAS $35.

suzy, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Sure, here ya go:

http://www.sees.com/home.cfm or 1-800-895-7337

I usually do the "pick your own mix" and also get some of the Awesome Nut & Chew bars. They charge a bunch more for shipping when it's warmer because they package everything so it stays cold - I don't know when the cutoff date for the higher costs is, though. She could always order extra right now and stick in the freezer for later.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

Also one of the things I envy about living on the West Coast is that you can walk into a See's Candy and they always give you a free sample. LOVE THAT.

Well, except that I'd weigh, like, 4,000 pounds.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

hello i am posting from the software exbibition hall in beautiful LAS VEGAS. yesterday ian and i walked 3 miles in the hot sun to find an in-n-out burger. it was delicious.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

did you walk in the hot sun in your cocktail dress? plz say yes.

lxy, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

there is a creepy mall in my hotel that has a fake blue sky and fake sunlight. last night we ordered fried chicken room service because i got too drunk at the customer networking event at TAO nightclub to behave in public. but tonight we eat at lotus of siam.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

not in my cocktail dress, but in a plain black normal dress. maybe i will wear the coctail dress tonight to the thai restaurant.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

yesterday ian and i walked 3 miles in the hot sun to find an in-n-out burger

burger pilgrims!

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

bell, if you get too drunk tonight and have to order room service again, please consider wearing your cocktail dress to answer the door. NOTHING is more elegant than dressing up for room service.

lxy, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

If someone could take photos, that would be even better.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

there is a creepy mall in my hotel that has a fake blue sky and fake sunlight

Um, that's about all of them.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

apparently i kept taking my clothes off before the room service arrived and ian kept making me put them back on. i was very, very drunk.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

but anyways. EVENING DRESS. PHOTOS. IT'S ON. now i'm going to blow off a class on crystal reports and go to the sephora in my hotel.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

There's a Sephora in your HOTEL!?! (ENVYING)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

Somewhere around here I have pictures of K and I eating room service and drinking wine in our fancy-ass linen hotel supplied robes.

It is possible that both of us are v v drunk in this picture.

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

When one turns milestones of old, I highly recommended applying 1 extravagant fancy hotel room and liberal doses of alcohol to the resultant wound.

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if any of the other guests could hear me yelling "HOLY FUCK THIS FUCKING SHOWER IS MADE OUT OF MARBLE!!"

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

ARE THESE SOAPS FROM AVEDA?

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

we hid the minibar key from ourselves prior to the drunkening.

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

SHIT DUDE THIS ARMOIRE HAS A SAFE IN IT!

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, who took the picture?!

And are you going to tell us the name of the hotel as a recommendation or what? (I'm going to turn 40 someday. And also 15 year anniversary in 2010. And hey, I'm going to graduate in 2009. Lots of excuses here.)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

The Grand Hotel in MPLS.

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmmm, thx, will tuck that info away.

PS I really didn't want to know who took the picture.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

they have these things in cel phones what they call the digital camerons or something these days

John Justen, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

Sure, whatever you say, Irish.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:56 (eighteen years ago)
