oh man, i just watched michael moore's 'sicko'... deeply, deeply upsetting. i guess when you've lived your whole life within that kind of system you're kind of used to it. but living in a country where healthcare is essentially free for all, i can't even begin to comprehend what it's like in the US. i mean, i complain about having to pay $45 for doctor's visit, but if i had an accident a trip to the emergency room is completely free; if i got appendicitis the operation is free.

it really scares to me think about getting sick or being in an accident while i'm living in the states.

This is why you work for the government if you can. If you're me.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

Or sell out and go into a profession that has more cash than sense (hi dere softwarez).

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

your healthcare might be hell expensive, but damn your electricity is cheap. when jordan told me he pays around $15 p/month i couldn't believe it. even now, in summer, our power bill (between four of us) is around $250 p/month, and electricity rates are still climbing on a regular basis.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

rubyredd have you ever swam with moko the dolphin?

jessie monster, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

moko the dolphin?? never heard of him, but there was opo (i think) the dolphin awhile back.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

'moko' is a maori facial tattoo. FYI.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

HE SAVED TWO PYGMY WHALES.

jessie monster, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

i can't believe this stuff makes international news.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

$15 per month for electricity implies that Jordan may light his home using candles

John Justen, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

I was going to say! We keep our house at 68 degrees F during the day and Really Fucking Cold at night; our last heating/electricity bill was $350. Of course it is ridiculously cold here.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

As for the health care thing, you really need to have insurance. It's expensive, it sucks, lots of people want to change it... but lots of people don't.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

When 4lex was born 6 weeks early, for example, we wound up paying about $99.00 total for his birth, the ambulance ride, my 2 day hospital stay (complete with epidural and about a million doctors and nurses) and his 21 day hospital stay. We had great insurance. If we hadn't had any, we would never have recovered financially from that event: we looked at all the bills and it would have been $100,000.00. This is 1998, mind you.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

eh, I don't pay heating on our apartment and our electricity is only $17/person. my friends had a $600 (gas) heating bill for the month of January, tho.

jessie monster, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

oh by the way guys I made dean's list. give me cookie.

jessie monster, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

Or he could just have an apartment. That's about all I pay per month.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

yeeah living in a closet!

jessie monster, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

huh. so what you are saying is that i shouldn't leave all my lights and appliances on all day?

John Justen, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

what if my cat gets lonely?

John Justen, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

my mom leaves her tv on so the dog doesn't get lonely.

jessie monster, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

huh. so what you are saying is that i shouldn't leave all my lights and appliances on all day?

Not unless you are simultaneously running the heat and the A/C at full blast. That way they can learn peaceful coexistence.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

I actually walk around looking for things to unplug, in a hopeless effort to spend less on that bill.

xpost jessie - congratulations on making the dean's list!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

I am sorry that I do not have a cookie for you, though. ;_;

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

bumping the thread bump

jessie - is your show on this afternoon?

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

nope, spring break!

jessie monster, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

LAZY

John Justen, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

lazy cookie

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

I want my spring break! So I suppose I should write more on my "paper."

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, here is an example of why APA formatting is just insane:

"If, and only if, each issue of a journal begins on page 1, give the issue number in parentheses immediately after the volume number."

So... you're going to look at every other issue of the journal EVER just to be sure that they didn't get all experimental for a few months and start on page 3 or something? Who makes this stuff up?

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

My mom leaves the television on for the dog when she goes out of an evening, too. Otherwise the dog gets angry and pees on her shower curtain.

suzy, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha. And I think I get annoyed when I miss Lost.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

I have realised to my utter shock (I have never really synched up with Lost) that one of the two LA brats at my college who used to hang out together playing at being Gatsby (seriously, think spats and plus-fours and water added to whisky in a dorm room re-furnished with art deco I HAS PICS) 'grew up' to be JJ Abrams.

suzy, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

That is CRAZY. All of it!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

Makes sense, though.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

The craziest stuff always does, somehow.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

For instance, the fact that your pants are made of ostriches.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

SLC filled to the max with LA brats when I was there; JJ's partner in crime was the son of Stanley Donen. Who was even worse than JJ as used actual brilliantine on his hair.

suzy, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

Leopold and Loeb Go to College!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

xpost Stay out of my pants, Ned!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

*YOU'RE* the one raising ostriches for apparel!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

is that what you name your privates?

remy bean, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

"ostriches" would be an odd codeword, but I encourage everyone to adopt it.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

Imagine if Spitzer had gone to a place called the Ostriches Club.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

HISTORY WOULD HAVE BEEN CHANGED

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

"And how do you like your ostriches?"

"...plucked."

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

i am speechless

John Justen, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

SO MANY LEVELS OF WRONG

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

haha xpost

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:13 (eighteen years ago)
