Strandbar - Todd terje- is there any reason for me not to just like listen to actual samba instead? To be fair, this is not my sort of stuff wrt electrowhatever, but it's def the best thing that's showed up in the rundown shuffle today. Improves as it goes along, actually actively enjoying it now that it's hit the 4 minute mark. Yeah, this is ok

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 19:59 (ten years ago) link

Better than ok actually, and my baby enjoys it when I make his lion puppet dance to it, so 2 thumbs up

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:02 (ten years ago) link

Keep returning to the fka twigs thing though. Huh I need more of this

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:03 (ten years ago) link

yeah that fka twigs song is crazy good

call all destroyer, Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:06 (ten years ago) link

yeah that was the song I went "wait where was I all year that I missed this" for

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:27 (ten years ago) link

Shabba - a$ap ferg - good lord finally something that hits and hits well. I like pretty much everything about this.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:29 (ten years ago) link

I feel like is such a fine line between doing this well and doing it poorly, and most stuff falls on the other side. Are there problematic lyrical points well god yes, but hey I listen to eazy so I can hardly point fongers

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:32 (ten years ago) link

Ueneo - rocko - and then on the other hand. It's like a bunch of dudes listened to biggies slow rolling delivery and thought "oh hey I can take that all the way to super boring" and are all trying to out bland each other and yeah so I hate this. Oh look rick Ross what a goddamn surprise.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:36 (ten years ago) link

yep. it makes no sense to me that people rate it.

how's life, Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:38 (ten years ago) link

We can't stop - Miley Cyrus - pretty sure this would qualify for worst chorus of the year but then again Katy perry probably released something. This song is such a torpid shitbag. Far more horrible than any of the controversial stuff she did this year (ok maybe not worse that that mtv performance but still this lasts FOREVER)

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:39 (ten years ago) link

one of my biggest shocks of 2013 was desultorily playing the A$AP Ferg album with the full expectation of hating it and liking it so much that I went out and bought it that day

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:40 (ten years ago) link

Echelon - angel haze - it's like someone took nicki minaj to a reeducation camp and taught her how not to suck. That's not even fair, because this has it's own thing going on but idk in some ways it reminds me of when minaj was a breath of fresh air, without all the trappings of awfulness, or hearing 212 for the first time. Whoa and just when I was going to say that it lacks a bit of the adventurousness, in comes the angel chorus and goddamn I am going to listen the shit out of this in the coming weeks. Redemption point for ILM!

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:46 (ten years ago) link

pro-tip: skip the Angel Haze album, go back to her mixtapes, esp. Reservation

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:47 (ten years ago) link

Yeah so far the standouts are the a$ap ferg, angel haze, bardo pond and uh kacey musgrave ? Wrt stuff I hadn't heard before.

Bipp - Sophie - ok this string of stuff is giving my pessimism a much needed break. This is fucking super cool. I mean there's obv roots in old school here but this is how you make that work. Vocal just on the right side of chirpy w/o ruining everything, great weirdo vibe. Yeah, another winner here.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:51 (ten years ago) link

Disclosure track slightly less annoying on second shuffle listen, but I still wish they had realized that 4 repeats of the fire line would have been enough with maybe a few partial recalls not the whole damn song.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:53 (ten years ago) link

the entire Disclosure album is comfort food; every song basically makes its point in about 2 minutes and then repeats itself, whether that's good or bad is entirely dependent on how much you liked those first 2 min

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:57 (ten years ago) link

(ftr I really, REALLY liked it)

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:57 (ten years ago) link

Looks like get lucky took number one so lemme just go ahead and say how much I hate that song and forever have since the first moment and also fuck that album forever.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 21:01 (ten years ago) link

NA super otm.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 January 2014 21:03 (ten years ago) link

Ya hey - vampire weekend - putting a weird noise in your chorus does not save you from meandering into being a bland boring indie band, it just makes you a bland boring indie band with a weird noise dropped thoughtlessly in your chorus. I wasn't a hater or a lover out of the gate w/this band like lots were (that me and your sister or whatever song was ok) but woof, I am so done w/ these people at this point judging from this song.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 21:04 (ten years ago) link

I really hate the new Vampire Weekend album, and I really liked the first two

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 23 January 2014 21:06 (ten years ago) link

On the production side I want to hunt down their vocal reverb guy and kill him

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 21:07 (ten years ago) link

I like Vampy Weekend

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 23 January 2014 21:11 (ten years ago) link

Gave the album another go this morning and it's largely horrible apart from Step and Hanna Hunt. Loved the first two records.

Ramnaresh Samhain (ShariVari), Thursday, 23 January 2014 21:17 (ten years ago) link

Most of this stuff I'm just like "I'm sure this is great but it's just not my thing" but I listened to the Paramore songs because I thought they were a "rock band" and they are so awful.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 23 January 2014 22:10 (ten years ago) link

Ugh I feel like I'm being so negative on this thread, sorry. I don't know why these polls bring out the worst in me. And I knew ahead of time the tracks poll would be weighted toward stuff I don't like/care about and it still made me angry.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 23 January 2014 22:11 (ten years ago) link

This is the thread for being negative without starting a big fight, though, right?

I agree on Paramore - I was led to believe that they'd added pop to their rock, not just taken away the rock completely. Very disappointing.

emil.y, Thursday, 23 January 2014 22:12 (ten years ago) link

whoever called them nu-Roxette on the poll thread was so, so OTM

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 23 January 2014 22:13 (ten years ago) link

the reactions from some people on the thread are hilarious, like anytime something that isn't pop enough shows up it's like a DJ dropped a bad song into their rave.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 23 January 2014 22:14 (ten years ago) link

The lyrics for "Still Into You" are too obvious and the music does nothing for me. I can see how it would have broad appeal but I prefer my romance several steps removed from "I remember meeting your mom" and I like my rock music to rock a little more.
Oh well. Not my thing.

Paramore reminds me of No Doubt.

Oh there we go! That is the missing link.

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Thursday, 23 January 2014 22:52 (ten years ago) link

there was a run of 3 songs earlier today where the vocals sounded almost exactly the same all by 3 different acts. I like the backing music on Sky Ferreira tracks better than most of the other stuff of her ilk, but whoever compared her to Suicide is just .... talk about serious disappointment of the Analympics/Animalympics variety

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Thursday, 23 January 2014 22:55 (ten years ago) link

hahaha yeah that threw me off

charitable remainder unitrust (crüt), Thursday, 23 January 2014 22:56 (ten years ago) link

i might start a poll thread for "most Rong statement" from the trax poll thread

nominees include:
Sky Ferreira - Suicide comparison
dog latin's Hot Fruit - Ascension comment
j0rdy's insight about swastikas

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Thursday, 23 January 2014 22:58 (ten years ago) link

pls add
Paramore = poignant love song

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:01 (ten years ago) link

i guess that's not as rong as the others

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:01 (ten years ago) link

hot fruit/coltrane definitely brought the most lols for me

charitable remainder unitrust (crüt), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:01 (ten years ago) link

maybe it is poignant to the 15 yr old girls I saw at Target the other day who looked like they listen to Paramore

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:02 (ten years ago) link

dog latin's Hot Fruit - Ascension comment

Haha, yeah, I loved this. A champion move.

emil.y, Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:04 (ten years ago) link

probably "pompous drumming" should also go on the list

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:05 (ten years ago) link

yeah, it's definitely poignant to someone, just not me and i am not fit to be an arbiter of poignance on this planet or any other.

which song featured pompous drumming?

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:17 (ten years ago) link

lol deafheaven i think, where the drumming is pretty workmanlike and dull for the genre

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:18 (ten years ago) link

really not feeling many of the songs on the tracks-list. making me feel old and unhip, i guess.
