that's the CW about her so you're playing into an already-established narrative

she and Brandy Clark are kind of the go-to "authentic young country voices" of 2013 afaict

65. she will - savages - time travelling music, appreciate the unburied guitars, and just when i was abt to slog it off as retro masturbatory factory worship, in comes the drum break and moves it to something more than that. theres a lot of badassery going on here actually, motherfuckers know how to build, thats for sure. i dig it, old better pj harvey before she got all pleasant sounding filtered through JD/NO transition stages. im sure this will get pinged with the retro tag but honestly, i dont think thats fair, and also saddled with asshole female band novelty media blitz, but thats a huge misstep, its a really good band, who gives two fucks abt the fact that they happen to all be women (which implies the tokenism that undercuts women as musicians, which is a personal fucking sticking point being stuck in the lunkheaded industry i am in). stands 100% on its own merits, like thousands of other women populated groups that get dragged down by assholes making their gender the prime narrative, while leaving the unsaid bias against women in rock intact.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 20:11 (ten years ago) link

Not really about Savages, but the 'who gives a fuck if they're women' thing is a double-edged sword. Being in an all-female 6-piece we've had to talk about whether we put it into our blurbs or not, and we've so far decided that we should. Not for men, but for other women, because when you're growing up as a girl into male-dominated shit it's good to find that there are women out there doing what you want to do.

emil.y, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 20:20 (ten years ago) link

I mean, obviously there are plenty of women out there who won't give a shit either.

emil.y, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 20:21 (ten years ago) link

because when you're growing up as a girl into male-dominated shit it's good to find that there are women out there doing what you want to do.

definitely. I haven't heard any of the gender-based hype or backlash re Savages. They are pleasant to listen to in that they sound a lot like other music I like a lot, but Savages just makes me want to listen to said other music rather than them.

So far the only song that I voted for is ... "Shabba"

Immediate Follower (NA), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 21:03 (ten years ago) link

There should be separate ILM polls for the U.S. and the UK.

this is a really good point btw, and i would have less of a visceral reaction in general if 90% of where i hear it wasn't some jim derogatis type basically yelling "you'll never believe this, but all of the band is ACTUALLY WOMEN" every 4 sentences like its akin to finding a youtube where a chimp builds an endtable or something

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 21:41 (ten years ago) link

Haha, yeah, I totally get that.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:22 (ten years ago) link

So huh I can only shuffle play from iphone. That's dumb

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:28 (ten years ago) link

Damn u technology that does almost everything for me I want more

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:31 (ten years ago) link

that is not true*; expand the cover art of the currently-playing song and uncheck the shuffle function

* this may only work for premium/unlimited Spotify

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:31 (ten years ago) link

I am low rent spotify, so nope.

Well then, I'll do them in random order, because the overall list is somewhere in the middle of 4000 posts or whatever in that thread.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:42 (ten years ago) link

The Wire - Haim - way less horrible than the other haim song, and actually fairly ok to listen to. Thankfully less bananarama this time (meaning better singing). Slightly confused as to why we need a saxophoneless Quarterflash in the 2013, but yeah, I don't mind this at all.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:45 (ten years ago) link

Also as a plus, listening to Burial a second time and much more into it this time around.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:46 (ten years ago) link

Betty who - somebody loves you - what the hell is wrong with you people

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:50 (ten years ago) link

Ok I should expand. This is the sort of shit that made me pissed when it would stink up Americas top 40 when I was an early teen. Lifeless anthemic dumb shit about nothing backed with paid intern synth lines, "wacky" retro multi tap reverb vocals. Plenty of stuff that I haven't liked at all, but this is the first one to make me actively mad at you guys.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:54 (ten years ago) link

I mean phosphorescent made me mad too, but mostly at him

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:56 (ten years ago) link

I like the idea of your sitting there growling.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:59 (ten years ago) link

Got the baby on my lap right now, so I have to internalize the growling, but trust me it's there

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:02 (ten years ago) link

Type of way - rich homie quan - ok first I have to start by shaking the initial chuck mosely totally unfounded reaction I am having here, so I paused it for a second. Something in the way he bends his voice on certain vowels maybe? Death grips guy having a better day drunk on White Russians and high on ludes? Ok. Don't hate it, don't like it, difficult to care about it at all really. This is a looooooong 4 minutes Jesus.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:18 (ten years ago) link

Haha it just keeps not ending

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:18 (ten years ago) link

I do not get this Amel Larrieux song at all

charitable remainder unitrust (crüt), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:19 (ten years ago) link

Closer - tegan and Sara - ok first let's start with the fact that people still caring about tegan and Sara strikes me the same way that a song by Lou Bega placing would, but hey that's just me. Weren't these the nasal harmony are they or aren't they deal from like 10 years ago? Canadian? Jesus man so much mall fodder muck showing up here, but this is similarly egregious to me. If this is the direction of pop you fuckers can have it. This is all because I'm old isn't it, def getting a "you fuckers don't understand I LIVED THROUGH IT THE FIRST TIME" vibe from lots of this list.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:26 (ten years ago) link

Hold on we're going home - drake - are u fucking kidding me

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:28 (ten years ago) link

True confession, I didn't even listen to the drake song. I'm sorry. That's unfair. But it's drake, so I'm sure that it's dull as shit and tepidly slow and yawn worthy, unless it's one of the ones where he does the "surprise everybody look out for fast drake!" In which case it's faster and still sucks, possibly more.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:32 (ten years ago) link

Ain't it fun - Paramore - ok Jesus, sarahell otm upthread, either I am hitting a bad shuffle streak or this backwards leaning pop thing is out of control. Here is this song, but done better in every way, you are welcome.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:39 (ten years ago) link

I know I am not supposed to "care" about lyrics in the modern day but Jesus this don't go crying to your mama living in the real world shit is so fucking embarrassing for a grown person to put on paper fuck man

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:42 (ten years ago) link

I don't even know where any of these placed, why do I feel that might make it worse

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:55 (ten years ago) link

ha

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:56 (ten years ago) link

Paramore, I permanently revoke your fake gospel choir privileges.

I sort of like tegan and sara post-"career advice sesh with will.i.am" or whatever happened to them but didnt vote for them.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 23 January 2014 19:02 (ten years ago) link

So good to me - Chris malinchak - I appreciate when an album/single cover gives me a heads up on what to expect, so thanks for that I guess. Bland, but would be fine if it was hanging/playing in a hotel lobby in the background. The minute this stops playing I will remember exactly nothing about it.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 19:05 (ten years ago) link

Honestly this whole list is basically just shit.

emil.y, Thursday, 23 January 2014 19:18 (ten years ago) link

I'm trying to stay positive but yeah maybe I should take a break for a bit honestly
