ok, as long as I don't have to go to palazzo versace.

W4LTER, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

I want to hear Dan's wife's squirrel stories and drink wine and hang out with you guys.

Instead I am trying to write a paper in APA style, which actually FIGHTS BACK the more you try to write. ;_;

Rubyredd, I would totally visit you in NZ if I could.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

sara, i understand your myriad commitments, and i will undertake the task of visiting you, instead. i really want to see lots of america so having people to visit all over the country will make it even more fun. is it expensive to fly around the US?

Rubyredd, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

oh guess what... jordan is, as i type, meeting my parents in SF for lunch.

i told my mum that jordan isn't all that familiar with SF restaurants, so while they're wandering round they should just find somewhere they like, but that she should check it has a vegan option on the menu. she replied with "does he eat fish?".

i'm kinda nervous about this whole thing.

Rubyredd, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

walter, i am not one for the palazzo.

ruby, i would be terrified, but maybe your family is less likely to put on a show than mine is.

estela, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, you should visit me! That would be awesome. (And I have a fold out couch downstairs that you and your boyfriend can stay on, if ever you need a place to stay - also separate bathroom with shower and lots of space...)

It can be expensive to fly around the US... it kind of depends on the airline and the time of year. My classes end June 15, though, and summer is a good time to visit this area.

"does he eat fish...?" Uh oh. Your mother sounds kind of hilarious, though.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

my parents both left school at 14, have worked minimum-wage jobs there whole lives, have no interest in art or literature, and were utterly baffled when i came home from school one day and told them i was going to be majoring in religious studies at university.

my stepdad is hilarious and has the same kind of juvenile sense of humour as jordan, so i'm sure they're going to get along fine. my mum has a thing for bald guys and nice manners so she's going to be smitten with him.

Rubyredd, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

<3

estela, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

Rubyredd, it sounds like it is going to be interesting and fun, actually. Unnerving at first, I'm sure - but your stepdad sounds like he'll be cool with Jordan and if one parent likes a person, often their S.O. will, too...

Sara R-C, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

OMG i told my mum to take a photo with jordan because that would be cool for me, and she just sent me a pic from her mobile: jordan and my dad sitting together, my dad looking like he's about to kill someone! i just about fell out of bed laughing!

Rubyredd, Monday, 25 February 2008 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

i hope jordan doesn't get mad, but i have to post this...

Rubyredd, Monday, 25 February 2008 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

lol he are serious Rubyredd dad.

W4LTER, Monday, 25 February 2008 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

the funniest thing is that my stepdad is a total goof in reality. but he always poses that way for photos.

Rubyredd, Monday, 25 February 2008 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't seen my dad in a year and he is looking very grey and old ;_;

Rubyredd, Monday, 25 February 2008 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, that photograph is A+.

Your stepdad IS hilarious!

Sara R-C, Monday, 25 February 2008 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

RE: "grey and old" - it might just be the picture.

Sara R-C, Monday, 25 February 2008 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

that is fantastic.

estela, Monday, 25 February 2008 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

jordan looks so uncomfortable. poor guy. but he can't say i didn't warn him!

Rubyredd, Monday, 25 February 2008 00:29 (eighteen years ago)

ok so here's the dirt:
it all went really well, my parents loved jordan, and i think they were hugely impressed by the fact that he paid the bill. also, it appears they have realised he's not just a 'good friend'. my dad asked him how he felt about my BOSSINESS, and also told him i must fancy him a lot because i ALWAYS talk about him. jesus, i didn't realise i was doing such a bad job of pretending i have no significant other at the present. my mum also snuggled up to jordan for their photo together and told him "this will make justine jealous". so yeah, my parents liked him a lot.

Rubyredd, Monday, 25 February 2008 02:51 (eighteen years ago)

aw <3 such good news

max, Monday, 25 February 2008 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

John Justen, Monday, 25 February 2008 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yay! I only caught a little bit of the broadcast due to Other Stuff Having to Get Done, but I recorded it so that if I want to watch I can skip a lot of the boring stuff.

Sara R-C, Monday, 25 February 2008 05:31 (eighteen years ago)

700 years later and my paper is mostly done. My proofreader is asleep, so the rest of it is going to wait for tomorrow. Whew!

I AM WEARING A SUIT. I FEEL LIKE A LESBIAN HOSTING A TALK SHOW.

jessie monster, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

Here are the transcriptions of some INCIDENT REPORTS that I wrote while teaching in Somerville some years ago, packed in a suitcase and forgot about until today:

EVENT: DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR
TIME OF INCIDENT: 9:30 AM
CLASSROOM: GRADE 5 / ROOM C
SYNOPSIS:

After being told not to talk –– during a science test –– W* began a noisy, unsolicited conversation with his neighbor.

"Please be quiet" I said
"I am being quiet" he said. "I'm not being loud."
"Nothing more or the test will have to become mine," I told ihm.
"Yo, man, it's cold. You're cold Mr. C*," he snapped, earning great laughter. I ignored this and sat down.
Ten or twenty seconds later, and at a very disruptive volume W* added "When you wear an earring you're not nice, and whe you don't you're mad cool. Maybe if you take it out of your ear it'll fix your attitude, dude."
I confiscated W*'s test and asked him to retake it at recess.

remy bean, Monday, 25 February 2008 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha to all of that

I proctor final exams at a local college and the students don't usually talk, but sometimes they do REALLY stupid stuff. We tell them clearly NO ELECTRONICS ALLOWED. We had a guy not only bring in his cell phone once, but ANSWER IT during the test.

Sara R-C, Monday, 25 February 2008 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

btw, jessie, I would totally watch your talk show

Sara R-C, Monday, 25 February 2008 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

EVENT: DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR
TIME OF INCIDENT: 2:30 PM
CLASSROOM: GRADE 5 / ROOM C
SYNOPSIS:

I refused to let W* leave before 2:45 on Monday, in accordance with the new end-of-day policy, so he began asking me "Can I go?" at intervals of approximately ten seconds, beginning promptly at 2:30. I explained – yet again – how this was a newer policy I was enforcing, and that I was sympathetic to the fact he needed to pick up his (17 year old) cousin from another school.

On Tuesday I talked with the entire class, reintroduced the idea that I would be dismissing every student at 2:45 and that this was an inflexible policy. W* told me that I had better be prepared to "flex it mad" because his father was coming to pick him up in the afternoon. In fact, W* added, his father was going to come right into the classroom, and would take W* home by any means necessary.

I asked W* to relay the information of the new EOD to his father. Twice, W* told me that he couldn't because his father was coming to see me, and that if I asked him to wait he wouldn't listen "because he is coming to see you and he is mad and my dad hella don't work like that."

I am referring this case to the administration.

EVENT: DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR
TIME OF INCIDENT: ––– PM
CLASSROOM: GRADE 5 / ROOM C
SYNOPSIS:

I moved some of the students to different desks to facilite a quieter classroom. W* wasn't one of them. He told me "nobody cares about me, nobody ever moves me," and I replied that recently he hadn't behaved in such a way to allow him to sit anywhere but in the front of the room. He replied "teachers hella suck" and reiterated that I never moved him. I told W* that this was the firs time I'd moved anybody. He said "You hella friggin' suck" so I sent him to get a drink of water, to cool down for a moment, and to wait in the hall until we could talk privately. About every thirty seconds during the room move, W* opened the door, asked if he could come back and received ample and precise warnings about the consequences for his behavior.

After the forth or fifth such warning, W* poked his rear-end in the door. He said something incomprehensible except for the word "buttcrack" so I escorted him to the office.

I am referring this case to the administration.

remy bean, Monday, 25 February 2008 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

EVENT: INAPPROPRIATE / SEXUALIZED ACTION
TIME OF INCIDENT: ––– PM
CLASSROOM: GRADE 5 / ROOM C
SYNOPSIS:

After repeated warning about the use of sexually-charged words (tit, cunt, ploughing) used threateningly in class, I asked A* to step outside so that we could chat privately. I told him I would be out in no more than two minutes. A* kept opening the door and begging to come back in, and when I turned by back he licked, kissed, and fondled the glass pane (according to two other students). When I talked with him in the hallway, he denied this behavior with much pride and claimed he'd been falling asleep standing up with his tongue out. [[Admittedly, A* does suffer from a cataplectic condition, but it is my strong opinion that this incident is behavioral and not neurological]]. A* apologized for being disruptive, promised he would behave more appropriately in the future, and was sent back into the room.

No further action was taken. I am referring this incident to the staff psychologist for further scrutiny.
