38. deathgrips - haha is this a push it breath sample in the beginning oh never mind here goes the song, wait srsly is this a slowed down push it sample? thats kind of awesome, but this is pretty weak sauce from these dudes other than that, i still like it but its nowhere near takyon and oh god i just realized that more than anything this reminds me of chuck mosely from faith no more hahahaha oh no i can never unhear that now

WE CARE A LOT

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

man if death grips put out WE CARE A LOT 2013 that would kick so much ass

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

otm

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

tempted to start one of those u.s. government petitions to force death grips to record an update of we care a lot

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

This is what I was saying about DG on the other thread. I want them to kind of become the equivalent of FNM or the Beastie Boys where they screw around with other styles just for fun and release a big melting pot party record. But one can dream I guess.

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 01:49 (thirteen years ago)

eleven months pass...

probably going to need this once again

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Monday, 20 January 2014 17:54 (twelve years ago)

there's a knife now?

gelatinate mess (darraghmac), Monday, 20 January 2014 17:59 (twelve years ago)

jjj, come eviscerate Ace Hood with me

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 15:39 (twelve years ago)

i feel like i need to start at the beginning and go from there.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:01 (twelve years ago)

77. Drunk In Love - whoa this is one meandering ass song. low rent production, beyonce sorta just making shit up as she goes, and although he hasnt showed up jay-z hasnt done anything worth listening to in years. wtf at this surfboard garbage. trying to place the awfulness of the beat, its like a scrap track from a third tier youtube hit. yep, jay-z. mehhhhh. haha did he just say hes ike turner what in the hell is going on here. haha swirly reverbed out vanishing beyonce reintroduced with a distant airhorn this is fucking garbage.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:07 (twelve years ago)

Bookmarked.

charitable remainder unitrust (crüt), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:08 (twelve years ago)

I actually like "Drunk In Love" but the rapturous attention it gets is baffling

OTOH Blatantly Sexual Beyonce is my 2nd-favorite Beyonce behind Black Radical Beyonce

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:09 (twelve years ago)

i am about to listen to beyonce #2 and it cant be worse so here we go

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:14 (twelve years ago)

rrrrrreally interested in your opinion on Partition

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:17 (twelve years ago)

76. Partition - much much better, im down with beyonce channeling missy elliot dipped in a light MIA sauce i guess. middle portion that starts with her saying drop the partition fast and some other stuff pretty much loses the plot although not completely at least. at times the production sounds a little like the third wacky remix that would show up on the CD maxi single. sorta falls apart at the end imo. big time diminishing returns here. still better than that first one, because no jay-z and the dude who wrote the beat doesn't sound like he's reading the fruity loops manual for the first time with his other hand while programming.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:20 (twelve years ago)

for me, this is "sneezed on the beat and the beat got sicker" vs "driver roll up the partition please, I don't need you seeing 'Yonce on her knees"

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:22 (twelve years ago)

I will also say this; I was lukewarmish on the entire Beyonce album until I watched the videos, at which point it turned into one of my top 5 albums of the year

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:22 (twelve years ago)

75. days are gone - haim - i dont want to talk about this. chorus sounds like bananarama. i dont mean that in a good way. WTF WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS. lead singer sounds like she listened to beth ditto but she sounded too scary. jesus man why

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:32 (twelve years ago)

im making a pledge to try to listen to the entire song here but fuck that with haim

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:33 (twelve years ago)

the really good Haim song IMO is "Let Me Go"; this is another band I enjoy but am not rapturous over (and their songs that are straight-up Fleetwood Mac pastiche are kind of the end of the world)

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:34 (twelve years ago)

haha and in advance i really doubt i will listen to 15 FUCKING MINUTES of bardo pond, no offense guys

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:35 (twelve years ago)

there's no real reason to listen to the Bardo Pond song but it's kind of hilarious

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:37 (twelve years ago)

it's great! like crazy horse with flutes.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:39 (twelve years ago)

^^^ OTM

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:42 (twelve years ago)

Crazy Horse with flutes is not hilarious! It's great. Y'all are more shrieky than I expected based on the thread title.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:45 (twelve years ago)

74. rival dealer - burial - hah i have been talking all year to people who dont want to listen to me about the resurgence of industrolectroebm shit in pop music and for that i am sorry but this burial thing is so so on the mark for that that its hard for me to have a straight reaction to it honestly. i mean its def denser than the old stuff which seems to be the real growth stylewise from like idk a;grumh or w/e but its got the brooding thing down while being all whipneck fast and shit. i like it, mostly, speed limit 140+ presents sad harcore. or something. slice of life talky bits are dumb, they should cut that out.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:45 (twelve years ago)

back in the old days, this would also be 3 tracks instead of one long ass one.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:46 (twelve years ago)

i am buying the bardo pond LP based on recently hearing it. also i think the beyonce tracks are all pretty good individually but the album works best as a whole. i don't "get" haim.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:48 (twelve years ago)

im not trying to be shrieky! i just have opinions but i didnt vote and i always feel like a dick steamrolling in and being all "U R ALL STUPID THIS IS GARBAGE" on the main thread so i put this all here. and not that its all garbage. just that haim song.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:48 (twelve years ago)

wtf at this surfboard garbage.

lol. voted for this song almost solely on the basis of the "surfboard garbage".

how's life, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:51 (twelve years ago)

I don't like Haim either. Shriek all you want, it's your thread! I thought the BP song was pretty accessible based on the original, but apparently I was wrong.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:56 (twelve years ago)

no one said it wasn't accessible! it's just long

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:01 (twelve years ago)

I didn't really get into the Bardo Pond covers single that much but the album they put out last year (Peace on Venus) is really really good if you're into that mode of sludgy psych rock. But LOL at people being like "WHAT THIS SONG IS 15 MINUTES LONG?" It's not like it's 1962, songs can be longer than three minutes now, we have the technology.

Immediate Follower (NA), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:01 (twelve years ago)

those results threads are pretty funny for revealing a bit of conservatism about music that isn't super-immediate.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:01 (twelve years ago)

73. the creator has a master plan - bardo pond - i fucking love this, havent heard or thought about them in like idk 15 years? i take back my reluctance for 15 minutes, i am totally in, see you all in a while. trying to place it, its like what all those dudes from kranky and constellation could have done if they werent too busy flattening pennies on train tracks and being a half-assed Crass.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:02 (twelve years ago)

all of ILM is pretty funny for revealing a bit of conservatism about music that isn't Ciara

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:02 (twelve years ago)

People can watch every single episode of 2 Broke Girls or whatever but their monocles pop out if a song is 15 minutes long.

Immediate Follower (NA), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:02 (twelve years ago)

haha OTM

fwiw the "hilarious" comment wasn't meant to be a knock on Bardo Pond, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to that song

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:03 (twelve years ago)

tbh much of my reaction to 15 minute song was based in "technically i am running a business and am at work" but eh fuck work

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:05 (twelve years ago)

all of ILM is pretty funny for revealing a bit of conservatism about music that isn't Ciara

Both lol and ;_; about the truth of this statement.

emil.y, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:06 (twelve years ago)

yeah the distant vocals dropping in halfway through this track with swoopy space noises rolling around in the background is working really really well for me. i like this a lot. also, as the dude who listens to NWW on the board, im the last guy that should be whining abt long songs obv

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:08 (twelve years ago)

i only like long songs when they are around an hour long and mostly the sound of a ship creaking THATS HOW THEY USED TO MAKE "REAL" MUSIC KIDS

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:09 (twelve years ago)

you are making me want to play "Time To Melt"

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:10 (twelve years ago)

72. XO - beyonce - haha this is str8 up 80s soundtrack in the intro i keep expecting ally sheedy to suddenly smile through all that mop of hair or something, chorus has the dreaded modern indie background shouters thing but not in a fuck u all lumineers way, i like this more than the other stuff, wish it was a little more driven or something. sounds like a pink song sometimes, but not one of the good pink songs, the boring ones about all being friends and drinking champagne and getting through the tough times and stuff. theres still something here i like somewhat though. idk, none of this beyonce is measuring up to the beyonce i want.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:14 (twelve years ago)

"XO" is pretty great

every time I think Ryan Tedder should be murdered, he pulls out a song like this

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:17 (twelve years ago)

100% agree with how the EOY makes ilm seem like a different place. NA otm about BP album too. I wouldn't have loved the Master Plan cover as much but I loooooooove the original and hearing it translated to one of my favorite styles (heavy lumbering dirge with hint of lightness) was a great musical moment for me.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:18 (twelve years ago)

Is it just me or does a scary amount of the stuff nominated and placing sound like 80s soundtracks and mall music?

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:18 (twelve years ago)

well, 80s soundtracks were awesome and I heard Santigold and MGMT at a TGIFridays last week so I think what you've generally described is known to most as "music"

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:19 (twelve years ago)

I hadn't heard any of the new Beyonce until this weekend when driving around I heard the second half of "XO" twice on the radio, both times coming in at the weird surfboard part. It doesn't seem like a very good song but Jay Z made me laugh and I liked when she got all growly and aggressive near the end.
