I don't really hate Valentine's Day; I just think it seems like asking for trouble to get married (or propose on - John's right) that particular day. I don't know if that is cynicism or what.

Yeah, it's a manufactured day to make people buy stuff, but a lot of people get into it and you don't really want to make it worse if, say, you're one of the 50% of marriages that dissolve.

jergz, all the costs are in nz dollars, but i am also earning shitty nz dollars. i'm definitely committed to doing this legally. it's not even worth considering any other way - i wouldn't have health insurance, i wouldn't be able to travel, daily practicalities would be impossible (renting under my name, financing stuff, etc). and i'm not prepared to take the risk of getting fake papers. this is a permanent move, not just a short term thing. the visa is for 12 mths, but we'll probably be getting married and applying for a spousal visa within the first few months i'm there.

yeah of course you should do it right. just wondering.

Money sucks, but it will all be worth it in the end, I think!
