Rubyredd, I am so ridiculous about school that I'm half-planning out how I can get into a Master's program someday already. At the same time, by the end of this I think I'll be ready for a break. (And to earn some money instead of spending it on education).

haha I got you guys beat, most of my home reading lately is with an eye to finding and honing a possible dissertation topic (still not sure if I want to do sociology, information security, public safety & risk management, or what - don't even have a program in mind, just that I think it would be fun to get a doctorate)

I never even LIKED school. just after DLI and GWU I figured out I'm pretty good at it

For me school = major social outlet that I desperately needed - but didn't realize how desperately I needed it until I started the program. I can't decide if I'm the nerdiest person there is or if I just stayed home with the kids so long that suddenly I am way more extroverted than I used to be.

some people are just way more suited to the student/studying thing. jordan loved it, loved studying and writing papers, and was really good at it. but although i enjoy the learning aspect of it, i hate the social aspect, i hate the pressure, and i disliked at least 80% of the books i had to read for english lit. the printing class and the media studies class i just did over summer were probably the two most 'useful' classes i've ever taken.

a coworker and I were discussing how grad was so much easier than undergrad the other day because in grad school you're targeting a specific area of mastery whereas undergrad forces you to do all these bullshit 100/200/300 level classes which are basically nothing but litmus tests to prove you aren't a complete dipshit and are willing/able to put in the time/money - so much introductory dross that every student immediately forgets once the semester ends

I really think the silliest requirement for this nursing program was making everyone take Intro to Sociology. We all had bachelor's degrees when we started, and I swear half the class is made up of people with psych degrees. One of my majors was women's studies, so when the book carefully explained sexism, I was mostly annoyed.

I didn't last long in graduate school, but that was largely because of lack of money and the fact that the program sent all the students to another state for 12 weeks. That seemed kind of crazy. (Also, it was crazy, and they don't do that anymore.)

(Well, also, cataloging class for 3 1/2 hours on Sunday noons were about the most deadening thing in the world.)

three declarative statements about Philadelphia

i've got an hour layover @ philly airport, on my way home to visit family for a somewhat unexpected wedding in RI.

the westbound runway approach over the gleamy-industrial shipyards is really beautiful at sunset, in a charles sheeler sort of way.

i have not been to to this city since i was eleven, and i wish i had longer today -- it looks like somewhere i might enjoy.

and an unrelated question:

how long is it acceptable to avoid opening an email you know is going to bitch at you really badly? (and for something you really don't deserve?) is it acceptable to just delete it without reading it? or will it continue to be an object of obsession, even after it's scorched from my inbox?

remy - I would probably just delete it, at least if you think you can avoid the person bitching at you. On the other hand, you might save yourself some trouble if you just read the email and then go ahead and confront the person who wrote it to you - but in person. It kinda depends on the situation.

boredom killed me long ago, i was fifteen and working in a bakery, a customer requested a 'sesame street' loaf and laughed heartily thinking they were the first to ever do so, it did me in, now i am a typing wraith.

I think I might have died of boredom when I was at home with Alex when he was a baby. Basically you are imagining that I am alive and typing this.
