that is so fucking cool. brewing scratches all of my weird never get to do it itches wrt closet chemistry geekery, and creates a situation where me + a couple peeps basically have to hang out and yammer at each other for 4 hours w/o the distraction of bar/party/show/whatever. plus it makes alcohol that i can put in my brain. its such an ultra satisfying thing to me.

i should start a homebrewing thread. maybe there is one.

I've got a kit that was bequeathed to me, and never used. Hmmm

we currently have an old english ipa and a bitter in the fermenters. the ipa is measuring at 9.6% potential alcohol. it has (this is literal, not figurative btw) A POUND of hops in it for a 4.5 gallon batch. even the furious clone we did only had 4 oz of hops. i fully expect it to hurt to drink it and am soooooo excited to find out.

also you should talk to my dad, he's been toying with the idea of doing a beer in addition to his wine adventures

the prob with the crazy ipa is that it takes forever to be ready - iirc its 2 weeks in the primary fermenter, 4-6 weeks in the secondary, and then 6 weeks of bottle conditioning? and those are minimums. i mean theres stuff that takes a year so i shouldnt complain but i want to drink it now

i forgot about the wine thing, how is that going?

He's doing a red wine right now; I can't remember if the grapes were pinot noir- or malbec-related. He's been geeking out over the fermentation process and every time we see him he brings samplers from his various batches for us to taste. I think the end result is going to be a pretty robust red wine reminiscent of a strong pinot noir, verging on cabernet.

He's got 200+ vines growing next to our house surrounded by an electric fence to discourage deer. I recommend calling him up and asking if you can swing by to check it out because it's kind of crazy amazeballs.

yeah growing grapes for wine is pretty next level. i have considered planting my own hops but A) i am a crap gardener and hate gardening b) my neighbors are stupid and old and would prob just assume i was growing dope in my backyard

Next time I visit them you need to swing by, it's super worth seeing

Thing to remember: doctors have heard crazier/weirder stuff than you can dream of. (I feel like gbx can probably also speak to this? - and wish for time off and a way to get you here so we could have a random story telling session with you all and him to persuade you. But trust me on this.)
