my parents are winging their way to the US right now, and in approx 3 weeks they will arrive in san fran and meet jordan for the first time. this should provide a wonderful story for ITR.

my parents are... hmmm. not unreasonable, or wacky exactly. but they don't actually know jordan is my boyfriend. they think he is a 'good friend', although i think my mum may have cottoned on to the truth. i can't remember if i posted this in another ITR thread, but after i emailed my mum a couple of photos of jordan, so she'd recognise him when they meet, she replied with "he is a nice looking guy. he is dark. not what i was expecting". WTF?!?! he's the same colour as me! and i don't know how she could have had any expectations, since i've barely mentioned him to her in the year i've known him. maybe she was just surprised because he's a total babe, and my other boyfriends have not been.

Hmmmmm... it sounds like it could turn out to be just fine. My parents liked A. right away, but I hadn't dated anybody for a long time and most of my friends at college were gay. I'm quite sure that they were relieved when I brought A. home.

It's kind of entertaining to imagine their conversation, actually. "Thank god, Sara is dating someone with a penis!"

Not that they would ever use the word "penis," but that actually makes it funnier, come to think of it.

So yeah, my advice is let them think you're dating or at least interested in someone they find entirely unacceptable; then you're home freeeeeee!

well, the thing is, my parents won't say anything directly to me: instead my mum will bitch me out to my little sis, and then my sis will report back to me. my mother basically thinks i'm clueless, hopeless and without good judgment (which is pretty hilarious coming from a woman who's had 4 children to 3 different men).

my stepdad, otoh, is excited for me to be moving to the US, and actually thinks i'm capable of stuff.

...and basically one of the reasons why my mum thinks i'm clueless, hopeless, and without good judgment is because of the last person i dated (and i guess she was right in that particular situation).

two ladies who work in the next office over got in a fistfight and now the cops are here and one of the ladies is cuffed with her head down and the other one is going soon! this is about the most exciting thing to happen here in months. yaowza

yeah, thanks sara. i should worry less about what she thinks, and i hate that i let it get to me. we have a very polite and normal relationship superficially speaking, but it's all the stuff that goes unsaid which is frustrating. she's just not the kind of person who you can have any kind of meaningful conversation with.

It's really hard to ever not worry about what your parents think (at least in my experience it is). And yeah - the unspoken stuff... I swear that my mother tunes me out unless I'm talking about either ongoing family dramas or fashion/hair style stuff. Also, she approves of A., but so far as I can tell nothing else I do is The Right Thing.

I will probably replicate this relationship with my daughter, too. Hopefully not.

Anyway, it's NOT just you, Rubyredd - and regardless of what she thinks, it's your life. And maybe she will love him!

strip club?!?! no no no, ballet company. but we have office workers. i am one of them. and two of them fought! i keep laughing but it's very serious for the sad punched lady going downtown.

also: i have met jordan's family (his mum is a sweetheart and emails me regularly) so i guess it is only right that he meets mine.

i mean brave for sending your parents as ambassadors, i can't imagine doing that, i would have been shockingly misrepresented.

HAHHAHAH yes i was worried about that for a brief moment, but i have told jordan every gruesome detail about my family so he's in for no surprises. although i am still a little worried he will look at my mum and be all "oh god is THIS what i have to look forward to in 30yrs???"

d) Spend Friday night sitting at home, tying at internet pals

I am going to study and check in with internets friends every once in a while. But I just got back from dinner with ONLY my husband, so at least I'm not tooooo cranky.
