John, there are 2 ways to consume Bovril:

1) make a tasty hot drink by dissolving however much of the it it suggests in boiling water

2) (and this is the good one) toast some fresh white bread, butter (or margarine) generously, and while still as hot as possible, spread bovril very thinly - most of the bread should be visible through the bovril. If the bovril is completely opaque at any point it's too thick. I reckon you'd need less than half a teaspoonful per slice.

2) should be the method for all three on toast when the judgment day arrives, as it will: the mills of itr grind slowly but they grind exceedingly small.

Gah, estela, you have ruined my plan: that m- and v-mite would suffer through over-application, and subtle, sexy bovril would be the only sensible alternative for new, tastier America.

I've started eating kangaroo since my try-hard gourmand friend convinced me it's better for teh environment, leaner, reasonably priced etc.

Rubyredd, It is a bit gamey tasting but it is very much a red meat. You can't overcook it, it dries out really easily. I find it to be like super-lean lamb.

net images/postcards don't really do his work justice. i saw his exhibition last year and it was AMAZING. he really captures that latent 'settler nightmare' or colonial gothic image of nz, and avoids the stereotypical tacky icons.

i think there should be categories in the judging, eg. best looking jar, nicest colour of spread, nicest texture, nicest smell, best taste with margarine, best taste with butter, best taste in a bloody mary, etc
