I think this is true (not that I'm in this loop), plus you'd have friends here already, PLUS adequate amounts of snow (usually) and cold (always). CLEARLY the Twin Cities is where you should go.

basically i will move where i find a good job that will make me happy. i always thought i would stay in new york forever and ever and ever, but now i'm feeling a little more open to other locales, as long as they are major city-like.

teh, i don't think it was failure in the grand scheme, though, and i like that you got game.

if you want snow, you will feel cheated by our winters, too. not to be discouraging at all, it's very nice here.

tehresa, Twin Cities are always banging on about more theatre per capita than anywhere else in America and contemporary art on the international level is v. v. good but not so much with local galleries, which seem frowsy or overearnest amateur if you're used to something more up to date. and if you're on the development hell side of things there, I think the rich people are prob much less assholish than their coastal counterparts.

ja have heard awesome things about walker. i'm more in performing arts, specifically music, than gallery stuff. also more in the marketing end of things than devo. though they do tend to work together a lot.

Walker has loads of live arts stuff going on always. Guthrie is amazing for theatre and occasional other stuff. Music is world-class. But we are all about the architecture for our arts venues now:

It always makes me sad to hear about how much people don't like Boston, because I have always wanted to go there so much. (Always = since I was maybe 17... ugh, that means I've been wanting to go for almost 20 years!)

Boston has its good points. I think the issues could be summed up as "bait and switch"; if you go in knowing it's a relatively small, provincial city that has a veneer of cosmopolitanism due to its location, it's a lot less disappointing.
