the real question is, 'did said librarian say 'rah!' when jordan finally agreed to pay the fine?'

tehresa, Saturday, 17 May 2008 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, see, the fact that I am pretty sure I know who this is makes this all the loopier. What a freakin' small world.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 May 2008 03:48 (eighteen years ago)

lol, that narrows it down

Hahah -- yeah, Dan is well aware about my vents re: grads and fines (since I was a grad and I NEVER accrued a library fine, I feel rather clear upon the point). Of which I will not say more here, beyond this amusement from some months ago:

Book: 2 hour loan.

Marked on spine: 2 hour loan.

Written on date due slip: 5:18 PM, as said book was checked out at 3:18 on the day in question.

Excuse: "I thought '5 18' meant month and day."

Me to self, directed at grad in question: "You are a moron."

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 May 2008 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

i always argued my fines, because most of the time, people would relent (not ned). i didn't argue with a "this is unfair" technique. i just whined about how i didn't have enough money to pay the special collections fines, which can get real steep in a hurry. this worked better than you might imagine. then, i found a loophole... if you keep the book until you get billed for losing it, and then return it, the fines disappear and you only have to pay a restocking fee.

when justine told me ned was a librarian at UC irvine, i almost said, "wait... is he the guy with the swervedriver shirt?" but then i realized she'd have no way of knowing.

ytth, Saturday, 17 May 2008 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

if you didn't have enough money, you should have returned them on time!!

Rubyredd, Saturday, 17 May 2008 04:40 (eighteen years ago)

clearly. but i was flakier than i am now (by a factor of five million) when i was in school there.

ytth, Saturday, 17 May 2008 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

55 minutes ago? someone reassure me i didn't kill this thread.

ytth, Saturday, 17 May 2008 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

You didn't kill the thread.

BTW, good night

HI DERE, Saturday, 17 May 2008 06:07 (eighteen years ago)

i found a loophole... if you keep the book until you get billed for losing it, and then return it, the fines disappear and you only have to pay a restocking fee.

True enough -- billing policy has been changed to fix this and there's more work underway in general.

(And yes, I am the guy with about five Swervedriver shirts. Given the reunion I am now hip before my time. Or something!)

Anyway, a chance to tell a story of which I have always been perversely proud. This occurred about ten years back, I think, and I wasn't there when it happened, but accordingly to a coworker an exchange at the desk once went like this:

PATRON: "I'm protesting this fine!"

LIBRARY PERSON: "Okay...it's a reserve fine, you'll have to speak to Ned."

PATRON: "...is he that long-haired guy with glasses?"

LIBRARY PERSON: "Yes."

PATRON: "That guy scares me! I'll pay the fine."

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 May 2008 07:09 (eighteen years ago)

shoot, i really should go to library school. this stuff is prompting all manner of nostalgia inside of me

dell, Saturday, 17 May 2008 08:16 (eighteen years ago)

hai

mookieproof, Saturday, 17 May 2008 08:19 (eighteen years ago)

mookie why are you still up? ps i just got home! good to see you tonight!

ned, you will be proud that i paid about $15 in fines yesterday because it was my own damn fault for not renewing or returning sooner. sad thing is the books didn't even give me any useful information for the paper i was writing.

tehresa, Saturday, 17 May 2008 08:34 (eighteen years ago)

Ah well, it happens. And yes I am proud!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 May 2008 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

John Justen, Saturday, 17 May 2008 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

I keep waiting to grow weary of drinking beer one of these days, but it never seems to happen.

dell, Saturday, 17 May 2008 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

wow there is a party going on in our back patio and i just looked out to see amps and a drum kit set up. loud, probably crappy neighborband playing is not going to be pleasing to my hangover.

tehresa, Saturday, 17 May 2008 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Go read the ILE EVIL GUIDE DOG thread. It will not help your hangover but it is awesome.

HI DERE, Saturday, 17 May 2008 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, so guess who got the patient who coded ten minutes before her shift started this morning? It was an interesting day...

Sara R-C, Saturday, 17 May 2008 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

"FAT TIRE" sounds really ominous

Sara R-C, Saturday, 17 May 2008 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

Suspiciously like "flat tire..."

Sara R-C, Saturday, 17 May 2008 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

YOUR FATHER OWNS LIKKER STORES HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW THIS THINGS

John Justen, Saturday, 17 May 2008 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't worked in one of those stores for over 12 years, so I'm hopelessly rusty.

Kind of tempted to go back to it right now, tbh!

Sara R-C, Saturday, 17 May 2008 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure ITR would tutor me in beer and booze basics to help me out.

Sara R-C, Saturday, 17 May 2008 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

oh god now there's a chick singing who thinks she is "soulful"

tehresa, Saturday, 17 May 2008 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

tehresa, Saturday, 17 May 2008 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

after the most amazing 1.5yrs (almost) of not being sick (except for one or two v minor colds), i think i've finally succumbed to the flu. sore throat and about a million sneezes today.

Rubyredd, Sunday, 18 May 2008 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

awww, poor ruby!!!

tehresa, Sunday, 18 May 2008 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

*sniff sniff* yes, poor me! :) ahh it's not so bad - i should be grateful i've gone so long without catching anything, given that i work fulltime in the service industry, esp since i normally get a chest infection once a year. i'm not feeling too shitty yet, but i have a feeling i'll wake up tomorrow feeling my worst. BUT at least i have the day off tomorrow.

are your neighbours still partying?
