estela, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

hey estela i have a question for you: is american sweet potato the same as kumara?

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

i'm eating roasted golden kumara right now and thinking how much i'll miss it if sweet potato isn't exactly the same.

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

it isn't exactly the same. you can't get kumara in australia either. i had an earnest sorrowful discussion on this exact topic on sunday with my sister and my parents and f. luckily we were eating delicious creme brulee with a spiced apple sorbet at the time so we didn't die from grief.

estela, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

The American sweet potato is a yam.

Abbott, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

oh man, i don't really like yams :(

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

american yams are not the same as nz yams, they are more like kumara than nz yams are, but not exactly like kumara.

estela, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

right. so what the hell is australian "sweet potato"?

wilter, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

I'm big on squash right now btw.

wilter, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

yams vs. sweet potatoes

remy bean, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

ok estela that is good to know.

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

A yam is like a butternut squash that's guaranteed to taste good, no matter which you pick. (And is softer.)

Abbott, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

Stet if you find yourself able to swing down this way as well for a bit you have a place to stay as well -- in fact I'm a short distance away from the main OC airport. But Seattle should be a priority!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

well i can't take kumara with me, but i'm taking probably a kilo of snifters and jaffas and perky nanas.

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

Ah butternut squash -- behold my lasagna of the gods:

Butternut squash, fontina, bechamel...deadly, BUT WORTH IT.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

jaffas rule

wilter, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

do we have to have kumara tasting now? wonder how customs feels about the shipping of tubers.

oops xpost.

now please, ruby, explain that other stuff.

lxy, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

That looks awesome, Ned.

wilter, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

what is fontina

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

ok lxy:

jaffas are these little round balls of dark chocolate coated in an orange candy shell

snifters are a chewy mint egg shape, with a thin coating of dark chocolate and a green candy shell

perky nanas are chocolates bars: 'banana flavoured' chewy stuff (but totally not banana flavour at all, since i hate banana flavour, more like pineapple) covered in chocolate

ooooooo i have to bring pineapple lumps too!

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

jaffas:

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

snifters & perky nanas are unknown to me. They New Zealish only?

remy bean, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

Rubyred, kumara are US sweet potatoes. From this site: http://www.kumara.co.nz/

"The kumara we eat today has evolved from a larger American variety which grows on a creeping vine. It was imported in the early 1850’s, and was quickly adopted by the Maori for its superior size and taste. Over time a dark red variety developed and named Owairaka Red.

In most other countries they are called sweet potatoes. New Zealand kumara are available in red, gold or orange varieties, each with a deliciously different colour and taste. The majority of kumara is grown in Northland."

Jaq, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

yay!

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

Also, US sweet potatoes and yams are entirely different things, possibly depending on what part of the country you are in.

Jaq, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

ok remy here is what i will do:

i will bring lots of nz 'candy' (LOL @ 'candy', we call them 'lollies') and i will post some to you when i am in the US, since it cost about $7 to send a 50g chocolate bar from here :/

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

Do you not know fontina, Rubyredd? I am sorrowed.

It is true that NZ candies are the greatness.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

no, but i'm fairly ignorant in many areas of knowledge.

can someone explain this 'challops' thing i keep seeing all over the place? not to be all tuo_Omas but i always miss out on the meaning of ilx jargon.
