I love every single one of these songs, but I'm voting "Sloppy" not only because it's my favorite but because I think it won't be shown much love here.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 July 2010 03:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Please be advised I'm not singling you out Johnny Fever, because we see plenty of that logic on ilx, but, "I'm voting for Mike Huckabee, not because he's the most qualified, but because I think he won't be shown much love".

I'm going with "Jocko Homo".

never heard this record but "Too Much Paranoias?" is the song title I want to shout out as loudly as possible right now, so I voted for that

HEAR THIS RECORD NOW.

Also, I admitted that "Sloppy" actually is my favorite.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 July 2010 03:29 (thirteen years ago) link

HAHAHHA reading comprehension failure over here. But still, I have seen that logic at work on other polls.

Yes ksh, HEAR IT NOW.

i honestly can't decide between like 5 songs. It really is one of the most solid front-to-back albums ever made

cosign 100%

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 July 2010 03:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Once I got "uncontrollable urge" stuck in my head for 3-4 days straight. I really thought I was going insane.

Ya ya ya ya yayayayayayaya!

lil' (Z S), Thursday, 1 July 2010 03:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Voted Mongoloid cos it was my favourite when it first came out & still is, tho yeah, this is a damn solid record

Bill E, Thursday, 1 July 2010 03:50 (thirteen years ago) link

mongoloid was my fave when it came out but i so freakin' love sloppy; the succinct lyrics and delivery still just floor me:
i saw my baby yesterday

she spent her money on a car

it didn't get her very far

so my baby said to me

you know my baby she

said sloppy

i think i missed the hole

If you can believe your eyes and ears (outdoor_miner), Thursday, 1 July 2010 04:02 (thirteen years ago) link

shrivel up

weirdest bed damn song

I tried to convince the guys I was in a band with once to cover "Sloppy," but got shot down because the drummer couldn't handle it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 July 2010 04:28 (thirteen years ago) link

And to that end, it should be noted that Alan Myers was an amazing drummer.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 July 2010 04:29 (thirteen years ago) link

hooboy that stones cover is such a lets-take-you-to-school-on-covering-classics. but then there's THE REST OF THIS ALBUM of equally amazing tracks!

relatedly, the gerald casale avclub interview is A++++

Bastards of Young Dro, Thursday, 1 July 2010 04:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Any song could win this and I'll be pleased

"Mongoloid" was the first song I learned to play, so it's an emotional fave. Might have to go with "Uncontrollable Urge" since it's still startling at how furious it is - even when they play it now.

BTW, "Come Back Jonee" on DEV-O Live is even more intense than the original

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 1 July 2010 05:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I love the melody of space junk.

I GOTTA GUT FEELING
I GOTTA GUT FEELING
I GOTTA GUT FEELING
I GOTTA GUT FEELING FEELING

do not front. how is that not the best shit ever? the last dying screams of the band's punk homunculus, getting walled up like the cask of fucking amontillado.

interstellar overdraft (contenderizer), Thursday, 1 July 2010 06:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Voted Jocko Homo, although could#ve gone for Uncontrollable urge of Jonee

village idiot (dog latin), Thursday, 1 July 2010 06:56 (thirteen years ago) link

i cant single out one track.
i just cant.
one of my all time fave albums.
which even after 26 years of playing this, it still gives me shivers up the spine.
ksh : please hear this whole album back to front : now.
seriously.
it really is one of the best way to spend 34 minutes.

mark e, Thursday, 1 July 2010 07:43 (thirteen years ago) link

oh, and to go along with the release of the new album, the new mojo (bruce on the cover), has an 3 page article on Devo.
not read it yet, but pretty sure its going to go well with a blast-n-beer.

mark e, Thursday, 1 July 2010 07:56 (thirteen years ago) link

The video for Jocko Homo is one my formative memories - I remember being entirely entranced by it at the age of 6. But I voted Mongoloid.

I'm being a smartass here, but in a fun way (NotEnough), Thursday, 1 July 2010 07:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Mongoloid

Implied Nazarene (latebloomer), Thursday, 1 July 2010 10:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Think I'm going with Gut Feeling, but I hate not to recognise the sense of "whoa, what weird and beautiful universe was this beamed in from" on first hearing Mongoloid, which still lingers even however many hundreds of listens later

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 1 July 2010 10:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Going with my Gut on this one.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 1 July 2010 10:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Urge, Mongoloid or Gut Feeling.

Uncontrollable Urge it is

Can anybody please help me out here?
Why oh why does this album always remind me of the Dickies?

Maybe it was my anal alphabetical filing? Maybe I first heard them both around the same time?
The one I want to be true involves the similarities in the backing vocals.

It's Ok, I'm going now

Fer Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Thursday, 1 July 2010 10:25 (thirteen years ago) link

My enjoyment was only peripheral until I saw them live a couple of years ago, but something to do with the sense of auspice means that I also get the Dickies when I hear this album.

village idiot (dog latin), Thursday, 1 July 2010 10:31 (thirteen years ago) link

I haven't listened to any of this in ages. It used to be "Uncontrollable Urge" or "Gut Feeling," but, in honour of the two hall monitors in Rock 'N' Roll High School, I'm going to vote for "Come Back Jonee." (This did inspire me to play "The Day My Baby Gave Me a Surprize" from the follow-up, which I like just as much.)

clemenza, Thursday, 1 July 2010 11:30 (thirteen years ago) link

this is really tough. im going to go with 'praying hands'. christian evangelicalism as an american bandstand dance craze.

Michael B, Thursday, 1 July 2010 11:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Was tripping the first time i heard "Jocko Homo" (OG self-released single) and mind was blown in numerous ways, so I'm going with that, but this is an amazingly solid, creative and FUN! record first cut to last.

Gut Feeling. That is a killer song.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 1 July 2010 14:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Gut Feeling. I like the second side better than the first.

I AM SEEING DEVO ON SATURDAY!!! YAY!
(also uncontrollable urge....cuz it blew me away when i saw the movie "urgh: a music war")

Q and Not Gucci (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 1 July 2010 15:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh my lord -- toughie. Going to go with "Jocko Homo," but with "Praying Hands" right behind it.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 1 July 2010 15:17 (thirteen years ago) link

And, again --- there really isn't a bad song on this album.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 1 July 2010 15:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Come Back Jonee by a hair over everything else. This album is perfect.

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction Votes

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Hooray for my two joint favourites being joint top of this poll. Weird, though, I always thought "Gut Feeling" was an unusual favourite, as it doesn't seem to get talked about much

(or at least, before getting this album, I could probably have named about half the tracks on it, and that wasn't one of them)

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 11:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Devo's "Satisfaction" winning the Can't Get No Satisfaction versions death match poll but getting no votes here only means one thing: Devo > Stones

kind of trill and very self-righteous (some dude), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 13:39 (thirteen years ago) link

i almost voted for it!

endless dougie (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 13:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Hahaha, only on ILM could Gut Feeling best Satisfaction 13-0.

I turn it up when I hear the banjo (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 14:09 (thirteen years ago) link

This video alone justifies my "Gut Feeling" vote. So awesome!
