Did anyone see or find out what happened to drummer Josh's hand last night at the Devo concert in New York?

Dr. T (dr. t), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I was there last night. No idea what happened, but he did an amazing job with just one arm for the latter quarter of the show (or as my friend John so charmingly put it, "pulled a Def Leppard").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Great show otherwise, I'm composing a needlessly lengthy review of it for no one to read on my weblog, which I'll unsolicitedly link here later so even more people have the opportunity to not read it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

We were up in the mezzanine (where, apparently, they relegated those folks with extra chromosones....and Moby). I saw some guy down on the floor get carried out, and he looked nigh on unconscious. Who'da thunk it?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

It won't cost $55 to read your review, will it?

Suzy Creemcheese (SuzyCreemcheese), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

$80, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

it's worth it....post that shit!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Still fine-tuning it. It would've been up earlier, but I had to goto a job interview.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

After all, what better way to prepare for a job interview the following day than by going to see Devo the night before?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i thought he was a great drummer before the Def Leppard stunt. I've learned he was in the Vandals.

My theory is that he hit it with one of his sticks while doing one of those over-the-head snare hits.
It seemed a bit of a serious injury for that though.

Dr. T (dr. t), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Read my needlessly slavishly overwritten sum-up of last night's show by clickin' here.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

nice...the part about the dork squad was most definitely not fiction. I expected it, but just didn't expect it to be so...stereotypically true. The funniest heckle I heard was during Vic Thrill, a guy not unlike comic book guy, yelled "hey nice iBook!"
wtf?

i've bookmarked yr review on my del.icio.us page and will read it later today. the blog looks great btw.

Jesus, he just did the Perfect Circle tour last year with a broken leg.

Heh heh...I was at a BUTTHOLE SURFERS concert the night before a job interview, and was still suffering the aftereffects the next morning! (And afternoon, and evening.) I gave the worst interview EVAH, but I pleaded sickness ("migraine", close enough to be true), they gave me a chance, and 15 yrs later I'm still here! Even got a ring to prove it.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 12 August 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Josh didn't injure any limbs on the Sting tour. Must not have rocked hard enough on that one.

bahtoology, Friday, 12 August 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

The man's got a damn impressive resume: the Vandals, A Perfect Circle, Guns'n'Roses, Devo & Sting.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 12 August 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Ween, Suicidal Tendencies...

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 13 August 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

Also, uh, Indigo Girls, Avril Lavigne, 3 Doors Down.

john McElroy, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

seven years pass...

Apparently Alan "The Drummer" Myers has passed away from cancer.

Shit, that sucks!

One of my friends good friend is his daughter. Sad for her and sad to lose one of the greatest drummers ever.

I only found out a couple of years ago, when she told me I just thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever heard.

The contrasting quotes from Mothersbaugh and Casale make it clear who wanted him in Devo and who didn't, which is kind of a bummer.

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 12:06 (twelve years ago)

damn, so sad to hear that. IMO Myers was what seperated great Devo from mediocre Devo.

frogbs, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 12:51 (twelve years ago)

rip, he was a huge part of what made them a kickass rock band.

tylerw, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 14:52 (twelve years ago)

I've been saying this all day in various places to various people but...as much as I love drum machines, fairlight's and electronic synth-pop dance music, Devo was a far greater new wave art rock band than they were a synthetic drum machine band.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 20:24 (twelve years ago)

yup.

paula deezen (get bent), Wednesday, 26 June 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

i'm doing a review for the reissue of the two Hardcore Devos that argues the same thing - basically that despite the overwhelming perception of Devo as a robotic 80's band, that was really the point where everything started to go sour for them.

His part on "Satisfaction" is so ridiculously perfect.

I lobbied for those hardcore devo recs in the 70s weird rock poll (to no avail), but as great as those records are it doesn't change the fact that myers was an amazing drummer. incredible precision.

Their appearance on SNL is so iconic - I saw it as it happened. I was 12 and had NFC what the hell was going on - mind totally blown apart.

Devo on Fridays made me want to be in a band.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

that whole period up from the early stuff on Hardcore to about New Traditionalists was all incredible. you can't deny that they became a much different band when Alan Myers joined up. Before they were almost like the Residents! Devo does a lot of quacked out beats and some odd meters, but without Myers in the band they never had that incredible energy that earmarked them at their best (see: the SNL performance of "Satisfaction")

frogbs, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)

I think the split is Casale's band (rockers and revolutionaries)/Mothersbaugh's band (future musicians and conceptualists) to a large extent, with Myers being a huge part of Casale's concept. Myers also replaced a Mothersbaugh, which balanced out the numbers.

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 21:38 (twelve years ago)

never read an interview with the dude -- was myers a beefheart fan? that's kinda the only thing some of his drumming really sounds like.

tylerw, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 21:41 (twelve years ago)

^^^ Pretty much anyone who was into "weird music" in the mid-70s was a Beefheart fan afaict.
