Turisas/Paganfest in Montreal was one of the greatest metal shows I have ever seen. Huge expectations with this album.

saw Brutal Truth a few days ago. man what a great show. all of the opening acts were good (a rarity, but oddly were all local too). bought me a Brutal Truth hoodie from Dan Lilker (was in awe, dude's hair is next level). learned that Dan A. isn't good at making change, and B. the hoodie musta been made in a sweatshop, cuz it leaves junk on everything you wear underneath it. but it still looks cool.

oh the show? phenomenal. they're all weird individuals, Kevin Sharp wore a cowboy hat, his voice/shrieks were impeccable, they played a lot of new stuff, but did include several tracks off of Need to Control and Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses. and for $10. best bargain of the YEAR.

I know it's from last year but what do you guys think of Animals as Leaders? My TA just tipped me off to them. Seems pretty remarkable in its intricacy and precision. Well-crafted compositions too. Is there anything else I should look for?

Tosin Abasi is one of the most extremely talented guitar players of the last decades. Really, that guy can do just about anything with a guitar.

Check out Scale the Summit as well. Also, Lye by Mistake. Both heavy instrumental dexterity units.

Tesseract is better than Animals as Leaders, in my opinion.

High On Fire is close but sucked compared to all their other albums

the Kylesa is ok but approached alt rock from 2001 at points.

some of these other suggestions could have come from the Rolling Metal 1995 thread.

that th eHigh on Fire doesn't really approach some of their other albums, but is still one of the best things i've heard all year in metal, either says volumes about the state of metal in 2010 (nah), or the consistency of this band (YES), or the fact that i just need to hear more metal (quite possibly!)

I know and enjoy Scale the Summit, although right now I think Animals as Leaders are a cut above. I'll look out for Lye by Mistake and Tesseract.

I don't mind the Cathedral album but I never really got into it in the way that so many people on this board seem to. Seems kind of hokey, actually.

ILM is the only place ive seen people rave about cathedral (or kylesa) people who are hardcore fans of both are very split on it.

I like the kylesa and the cathedral is ok but nothing special really.

I like the Kylesa better than the Cathedral, if only because the Cathedral is too long and too eclectic; it's like a buffet platter, where the Kylesa disc does one thing really, really well for a concise 40 minutes.

Will be interesting to see how they do in our poll.

How does the Kylesa album compare to Static Tensions?

Better songwriting, better production, better vocals by Pleasants.

Aww man Encoffination, I'm loving it. Takes me back to the late 80s death/doom thing before everything got blasty and brutal. Hope I can find their stuff somewhere.

Did my part and officially purchased the Agalloch since it finally popped up in my local shop this week.

It's the riffs with Cathedral though. And, yeah, I prefer Blessed Black Wings to Snakes For The Divine but not the others.

And tbf: Electric Wizard - Rolling Metal 1972; Iron Maiden - Rolling Metal 1990 - 2010; The Body - Rolling Metal 2023; Encoffination - Rolling Metal 1990.

On top of the riffs, the Cathedral record is also about the production - it sounds spectacular. Doesn't feel long to me because it is so eclectic. I find it an invigorating instead of tiring listen.

oh, definitely. the sound of the thing + its continually surprising make-up are precisely what I like about it. I don't find listening to it to be a chore at all.

Also, Phil is 100% right. As shocked as I am to be saying this, The Damned Things album is a really fun hard rock record.

I found myself sort of liking the two leaked Damned Things songs, so it looks like I'll have to give the album a try (and maybe a write-up) before the end of the year.

Has anybody else heard Hour of 13's The Ritualist? As retro-minded doom goes, I think I like it better than Ghost. The songs are pretty fucking catchy, in a Roky Erickson and the Aliens sort of way, especially "Demons All Around Me."

yeah, I have. it's pretty good but I liked the s/t one from a few years ago a bit better. could just be the extra time I've spent with it, tho.

Yeah, pretty good traditionalist doom. Didn't really do much to grab my ears outside of some decent tunes, though. I just love the harmonies and atmosphere of the Ghost record the more I listen to it.

Yeah, the Hour of 13 album is terrific. Old fashioned doom that's not afraid to employ good melodic vocals.
