No See The Sky About to Rain? Hmm . . .

(Are these just the singles, perhaps)

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 10 May 2008 01:50 (thirteen years ago) link

That's not on any official version that I can find info about.

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 10 May 2008 01:54 (thirteen years ago) link

You mean you can't find any info about that song at all? It's Track No. 2 from On The Beach (1974 or 75, can't recall which).

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 10 May 2008 01:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm saying it's not on Decade.

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 10 May 2008 01:59 (thirteen years ago) link

hard

gabbneb, Saturday, 10 May 2008 02:32 (thirteen years ago) link

20 years ago I would have voted "Cortez," but now it's "A Man Needs A Maid" all the way.

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 10 May 2008 02:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Damnit I used to have this CD - someone gave it to me - and then I ended up giving it to someone else! STOOPID.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 10 May 2008 03:03 (thirteen years ago) link

"like a hurricane"

plenty of great songs there, but that one's just one of my favorites by anyone.

tipsy mothra, Saturday, 10 May 2008 03:10 (thirteen years ago) link

"ohio"
the outrage is immense and perfect

that's not my post, Saturday, 10 May 2008 03:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I went with Cortez. 20 years from now, I will go with "A Man Needs a Maid"

Z S, Saturday, 10 May 2008 05:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Hurricane: I like the Live Rust version better, and I couldn't not vote for Heart Of Gold ultimately.

StanM, Saturday, 10 May 2008 06:05 (thirteen years ago) link

"The Needle and the Damage Done," the brevity of which (it's the shortest on Decade) just hurts.

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 10 May 2008 09:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Came down to Hurricane vs Winterlong, went for the otherwise unreleased

Niles Caulder, Saturday, 10 May 2008 09:04 (thirteen years ago) link

hey wait, that is disc three and half of disc two...

The Real Dirty Vicar, Saturday, 10 May 2008 09:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Which is my way of saying that I prefer Decade on vinyl, as it is more manageable on three discs and six sides.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Saturday, 10 May 2008 09:08 (thirteen years ago) link

"Winterlong."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 10 May 2008 13:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Needle and the Damage Done

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:20 (thirteen years ago) link

hurricane. might seem obvious -- just as my vote for after the gold rush might seem obvious on the other disc -- but i don't give a shit. these fucking songs.

grimly fiendish, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:22 (thirteen years ago) link

what he says

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Do you think Neil heard Big Star before recording "Winterlong?"

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Heh. Eric Weisbard said as much in the big SPIN book.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:36 (thirteen years ago) link

somewhere, on an old tape of a show from picadilly radio, i have the pixies' version of "winterlong". it is incredible.

grimly fiendish, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:51 (thirteen years ago) link

"Harvest"

Euler, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:54 (thirteen years ago) link

I wish "Ambulance Blues" were on here instead of "For the Turnstiles", so I'll have to go with "Harvest" too

matinee, Saturday, 10 May 2008 20:21 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah "ambulance blues" would be my pick for song-not-on-decade-that-should-be. or possibly "only love can break your heart."

tipsy mothra, Saturday, 10 May 2008 20:32 (thirteen years ago) link

grimly, the pixies version is on the b-sides CD if you dont have it http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-B-Sides-Pixies/dp/B000056Q1P/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1210451620&sr=8-1

(yes it is great)

Thomas, Saturday, 10 May 2008 20:35 (thirteen years ago) link

"Hurricane" my sentimental choice over "Cortez". Close, though.

Lostandfound, Saturday, 10 May 2008 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

song-not-on-decade-that-should-be

Should've had more than one representative from Zuma. Barstool Blues maybe. Or Lookin' For A Love.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 10 May 2008 22:46 (thirteen years ago) link

'tired eyes' or 'ohio' or 'cortez'

can't decide on this one

Charlie Howard, Monday, 12 May 2008 07:36 (twelve years ago) link

There may be lots of great songs on "Harvest" and just one on "American Stars'n'Bars". But that one is one of his best ever songs, so I voted "Like a Hurricane"

Geir Hongro, Monday, 12 May 2008 07:47 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe Needle and the Damage Done. Otherwise Old Man, which might seem obvious or played out to some, but it knocks me out every time.

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 12 May 2008 11:30 (twelve years ago) link

Tough to chose between "Ohio", "Tonight's the Night", "Tired Eyes", "Winterlong", "Like a Hurricane", "Cortez the Killer"

Tom D., Monday, 12 May 2008 11:34 (twelve years ago) link

May i please have 11 votes?

fantasimundo, Monday, 12 May 2008 15:43 (twelve years ago) link

i have gone with tonight's the night. Decade was the most beloved item of mine in my parents record collection.

fantasimundo, Monday, 12 May 2008 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

Tempted to go for 'Winterlong' - it being the main reason I bought this in the first place - but opted for 'Like A Hurricane' after hearing it playing on vinyl at ear-splitting volume in a Relics Records the other week.

"Do you think Neil heard Big Star before recording "Winterlong?"

How is this possible? Neil was playing Winterlong as early as March of '70

Bill Magill, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

do you think it's possible both neil and big star had heard the byrds?

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

plus is winterlong that out of character from the guy that wrote cinnamon girl?

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

winterlong!

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 15 May 2008 23:01 (twelve years ago) link

Regarding Big Star, it may be the other way round. There is a lot of Neil Young in the style of Big Star, particularly after Chris Bell left.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 16 May 2008 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I almost voted for it, love that song

Well, at least Soto (typically) knew what I was talking about.

It's possible because the version on Decade was recorded in late 1973/1973.

To the next question: um...er....uh...

To the last question: um, no...

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 17 May 2008 14:04 (twelve years ago) link

late 1973/1974

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 17 May 2008 14:05 (twelve years ago) link

twelve years pass...

was “winterlong” intended for release before it appeared on decade? odd to be that such a lush huge sounding track was just filed away

it’s interesting that “don’t cry no tears” was one of the first songs he wrote back in 1964. I guess a live version was originally going to appear on Decade?

brimstead, Thursday, 29 April 2021 19:38 (one week ago) link

I imagine the Whitten era Crazy Horse tried recording "Winterlong" at some point (maybe in summer of 69), but maybe it never quit got there. They certainly nail it on the Fillmore East disc.

Here's the embryonic "Don't Cry" ...

tylerw, Thursday, 29 April 2021 19:51 (one week ago) link

interesting, per the Decade wiki, I'd never read anything about it being on TNN

"Winterlong" – 3:05

Previously unreleased; recorded in November 1973 and appeared on certain acetate pressings of Tonight's the Night

yeah it's on this, along with some other on the beach-y type things: https://www.discogs.com/Neil-Young-Tonights-The-Night-Acetate/release/4138624

i love "winterlong." a lot. like, really a lot.

and tyler's neil knowledge never ceases to impress.

that is all.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Thursday, 29 April 2021 20:12 (one week ago) link

haha, imagine if all that knowledge was actually useful!

tylerw, Thursday, 29 April 2021 22:41 (one week ago) link

I'm glad "Soldier" has a second life on this record, rather than languishing unheard on the Journey Through the Past soundtrack.
On the other hand, "Ambulance Blues" may be my favourite Neil Young song, but it wouldn't fit on Decade, it needs to stay at the end of side 2 of On the Beach.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 30 April 2021 03:02 (one week ago) link

Apparently 'Winterlong' was recorded at Larrabee Studios in Hollywood on 10/17/69. I imagine it was intended for the second Crazy Horse album that was swallowed up by After the Gold Rush.

whitehallunity, Friday, 30 April 2021 20:08 (one week ago) link

aha, yeah that makes sense. maybe that recording will be on Early Daze, which Neil has been talking about forever ... might have the crazy horse version of "helpless," and early take of whitten's "look at all the things," maybe some additional recordings from the 1970 tour.

tylerw, Friday, 30 April 2021 20:13 (one week ago) link

I'd say it's pretty useful tyler. I mean, it's much easier to hear what you have to say than to wade through some of the other, more toxic Neil related websites out there.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 30 April 2021 20:18 (one week ago) link

I believed Neil when he said that 'Helpless' didn't get recorded in Shakey, until he somehow 'found' another CH take of 'Birds' with the second verse, haha. I really hope Early Daze actually comes out at some point, in some format, etc.

whitehallunity, Friday, 30 April 2021 20:35 (one week ago) link

that first crazy horse album rules I would love to hear if there were any outtakes from that (though I guess that wouldn't really be Neil's to release)

a few outtakes can be found on this (kinda scarce) compilation: https://www.discogs.com/Crazy-Horse-Scratchy-The-Complete-Reprise-Recordings/master/394322

Yeah totally, and also the web is just so fucked now I don’t even know how to FIND the comprehensive “lo-tech but full of info” web 1.0 fan sites that are filled with this kind of stuff

brimstead, Friday, 30 April 2021 23:04 (one week ago) link

Anyway, thanks, tyler! The Neil well runs deep!
