How the fuck is there no Pink Fairies thread?

I was prompted to ask this question cos I saw a band called Pink F.A. are playing Dirty Water soon, and the description made it look like it was Pink Fairies/Deviants members, but it looks like it's actually just a tribute act (although they laughably try to make out like it's not - "They do not consider themselves a tribute band, in the way others do - they do not assume band members identities, instead concentrating on the spirit of the band's "anti star" stance" OK...)

So anyway. Pink Fairies fucking awesome.

KINGS OF OBLIVION FUCK YEAH

the flying pink pigs on the cover are one of those things that just make a record perfect, ya know?

sleeve, Saturday, 23 February 2008 02:23 (eleven years ago) Permalink

yeh, kings of oblivion is stone classic. a friend of mine hates the wallis stuff, i'll never get that. the early stuff is hit and miss, but you can't hate "do it" and "teenage rebel" and uncle harry and all that.

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 23 February 2008 02:33 (eleven years ago) Permalink

and yeah Kings of Oblivion >>>>>>>>>> the first 2.

One of my absolute favorite favorite albums of all time.

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 23 February 2008 02:34 (eleven years ago) Permalink

their Stiff single is so good too. It's all good. even 'Kill Em and Eat Em' has some good tracks.

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 23 February 2008 02:35 (eleven years ago) Permalink

NeverNeverLand I think is as good as Kings Of Oblivion.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 23 February 2008 02:38 (eleven years ago) Permalink

I still love the first two. It's just that I love Kings SO much.

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 23 February 2008 02:40 (eleven years ago) Permalink

True understanding of Kings isn't to be had unless the first Motorhead is played afterward, at least once.

libcrypt, Saturday, 23 February 2008 03:34 (eleven years ago) Permalink

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION: I do not like the Pink Fairies, and that said, I think Never Neverland is BETTER than Kings of Oblivion, but maybe there's something to what Libcrypt says. One never knows. (and I've TRIED! I bought Kings of Oblivion blind and listened to it maybe twice in three years before selling it back.)

ian, Saturday, 23 February 2008 05:37 (eleven years ago) Permalink

(A lot of my friends are into the Pink Fairies, so maybe it could just be the contrarian in me.)

ian, Saturday, 23 February 2008 05:37 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Pink Fairies (Polydor UK 1976) > Kings of Oblivion > What A Bunch Of Sweeties > Never Never Land.

They're all pretty good, though.

xhuxk, Saturday, 23 February 2008 05:42 (eleven years ago) Permalink

what is Pink Fairies (Polydor UK 1976), chuck?

oh wait ... is that that comp with the airbrushed logo on the cover that you put in Stairway? yeah that is pretty cool because it has those singles like "The Snake" and so forth ... but I still don't think it tops Kings.

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 23 February 2008 05:48 (eleven years ago) Permalink

but i do thank you for introducing me to it because quite frankly when I got into Pink Fairies in the 90s, i didn't even know those other extraneous tracks existed!

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 23 February 2008 05:50 (eleven years ago) Permalink

xp Weird, the compilation I call Pink Fairies is called Flashback here and there on the Internets, though it doesn't say that word anywhere on my copy. But maybe it is 1976 rather than 1975:

xhuxk, Saturday, 23 February 2008 05:52 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Shit! I mean, maybe it's 1975, not 1976 (as some places seem to claim.)

yup .. "Snake" and "well Well Well" etc ..totally essential..

yup, which is why I'm glad to own the CD versions! Fairies vinyl is apparently as elusive as Stairway assured us. (I did find Never Never Land way back in the '80s but that was luck.)

Kings > Never > Sweeties is my ranking

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 25 February 2008 19:54 (eleven years ago) Permalink

I've got a 3 sided lp of BBC sessions called "Uncle Harry" (one of the sides of the 2lp set is etched with flying pigs). Has a totally shredful version of "The Snake" on it. I think it's probably a bonus on one of the cd releases or something. Also has a nice cover of "lucille" and a couple takes of "Uncle Harry" and "DO IT."

Trip Maker, Monday, 25 February 2008 19:59 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Fairies vinyl is apparently as elusive as Stairway assured us.

Wait, so does that mean my LP copies of Kings of Oblivion and the Flashback comp are worth $$$? How much? (As usual, I'm clueless about such record-collecting details. And I even more cluelessly sold my copy of What A Bunch of Sweeties after I wrote Stairway, along with most of the other albums in the book, undoubtedly for a fortune less than it is now worth. I've only ever owned Never Never Land on a cassette someone made for me.)

Polydor replica reissue of Masters of Oblivion all over the place a couple years back. Dunno if it's still around.

contenderizer, Monday, 25 February 2008 22:20 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Can't miss their unusual version of "I Saw Her Standing There" which turns into an S&M party in which the girl hits the singer with her broom.

i think this is more or less the same as "mandies and mescaline round at uncle harry's" - though if it contains those really ass-fidelity covers of "tomorrow never knows" and "3/5ths of a mile" it might be split between mandies and that cleopatra comp. so annoying that you have to get both of those if you want the best quality glastonbury and bbc sessions, since they're radically different in sound on those two discs.

"What a Bunch of Sweeties" deserves way more props I think. Everything about their version of "Walk Don't Run" is killer! The lazy, just on the right side of sloppy feel, the amazing guitar tone, deep, heavy drums, and the bit where it goes into sort of ragarock mode at the end, crank it up on a decent set of speakers and it feels like it could move stuff around the room. It's one of my favouritest records.

This is true. It's really pretty good, just a little too self-indulgent at times.

Also "Chambermaid" from Kings is so fucking good.

Bought some time ago the Finland Freakout cd that contains insanely massive versions of Tomorrow Never Knows and The Snake - hippy-punk at its best.

I have and it's definitely worth reading! Pretty basic history of the time, but very interesting if you're into the Pink Fairies or the Ladbroke Grove bands, free festivals, etc. Not being British a lot of that was new to me.

You have to dive into the Deviants, 'cause there's no real direct analogy with the PFs.
