Larry Wallis appreciation thread

seems like all i do is start bullshit death thread .. need to celebrate some of the living greatest: here's one -- Larry Wallis

he made the previously pretty-good-but-kinda-silly Pink Fairies the BEST BAND EVER for one glorious album: 1973's Kings of Oblivion

"City Kids" into "I Wish I Was A Girl" -- that is amazing. and the album never lets up.

Then our Larry joined Motorhead -- charter member, in fact. He's on two whole albums, if you count the earlier scrapped version rereleased as ON Parole along w/ teh later S/T LP. Freaking amazing singing and playing once again. First and only time Lemmy shared the mic w/ anyone else? of course, he recognized Larry's genius.

then Larry had his great "On Parole" / "Police Car" single for STIFF... played on Farren's solo shizz ... made another AWFUL single that I have but can't recall the name of

.. and that was it until the mighty REDBIRDS ep on Nigel Cross's label (Nigel also put out thee awesome Bridget St' john 10" that all you johnny-come-latelys should seek) .. it was good!! the 40 year old drunkard still sounded pretty hot! but that's been it as far as I know. I know there was an FE cover story in there somewhere but I've read the thing! need to get that puppy. anyway. other luvvers rep it

well i'm witchoo on kings of oblivion and the motorhead stuff (and i'd probably be with you on the rest if i had em). kings is a monster and on parole doesn't get the respect it deserves.

The epic Nigel Cross interview with Mr. Wallis in Forced Exposure was a classic - the guy had so many great stories to tell - though apparently he wasn't too pleased about some of them seeing print! Should have been a book.

He fucking totally rocks! The best album I have that he's on is that pink fairies live at the roundhouse thing. Mighty though "kings of oblivion" is, I do like "Never Never Land" & "What a Bunch of Sweeties" better, mainly b/c of PAUL RUDOLPH. None of these guys get even 1/100th of the props they deserve in the music magazines!

Jack Lancaster used to piss me off anyways 'cos he wore Dr. Scholls' sandals... NOT VERY ROCK AND ROLL!!!

Kings of Oblivion is so killer. I have a tape dub of some late '70s Wallis single called "Police Car" - I'll have to listen to it again.

He's also got a solo album he recorded in 2001 called Death in The Guitar Afternoon that has a 8 minute version of Police Car.The whole album is great with lots & lots of guitar solo's.His voice is just about gone but it's great to hear that guitar sound again.I believe he also played on the first couple UFO albums. And yes Kings Of Oblivian is one of my favorite albums ever. Can't count how many times i got high to side 1 of that sucker.

Larry Wallis is a Monster Guitar player! I need to track down the Shagrat lp he put out in the early 90s.
BTW, he never recorded with UFO, he quit during before they got anything recorded. Mick Bolton was the guitar player on the first two UFO lps, which are great hard rock lps.
