so I saw Yes last night in SF. I debated going to this for ages because, although I love the band, and loved the last album, reports of the last few tours have been dire, and I kept hearing about key changes and slow tempos and all kinds of disaster. I was also suspect of the new new vocalist; I liked the last new vocalist fine on Fly From Here, thought he channeled more Trevor Horn on Drama than Anderson, but what I'd seen of Davidson really seemed like an Anderson impersonator (I should also mention: I'm way over Jon Anderson too). But then I figured, what the hell, I've never seen Yes despite years of fandom, it's not a big venue, and who knows when I'll see them again. So I bit the bullet and got a balcony seat.

It was fucking great! They really delivered. This is the third show on this tour and from what I've read most of the 'issues' of the past tours don't seem to be present. No keys were changed (probably because Davidson can deal with the original ones) and nothing seemed sluggish or slowed down. What little flub ups there were felt like natural live playing mistakes. Downes was kind of a monster on the keyboards, pulling off Wakeman riffs but never overplaying. Steve Howe was amazing to watch. The worst thing about any of it was Chris Squires bloated appearance and choice of beaded blouse.

Anyway if you like Yes and you like these albums (they are doing The Yes Album, Close to the Edge, and Going for the One in entirety) then you should probably go to this tour. Who knows if the next one will be any good at all.

I had a dream a coupla weeks ago that Chris Squire retired from music and became a doctor - my doctor! I had the impression that he didn't wish to talk about his past life, so I waited until he finished examining me before I praised his basslines on The Yes Album.
