No surprises here. . . .

Cardinal Fang (Cardinal Fang), Sunday, 20 June 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The view from America.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 20 June 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

- Jim DeRogatis is the drummer for Gay Dad.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 20 June 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

DeRo on the Stone Roses: You're going to champion that lame retread disco beat, that whiny singer, those oh-so-dated chiming guitars and all the lifted Simon and Garfunkelisms (it's OK with us, you can have 'em!)?

We're sorry, dad...we'll try harder next time.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 20 June 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw this in the shop today.

i bought the independent instead

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 20 June 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the Streets's faux Eminem routine

up next, Dizzee Rascal's faux Sly Stone routine

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 20 June 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Elephant Man's faux Gregory Isaacs routine
Neko Case's faux Andrews Sisters routine
The Mountain Goats' faux Beach Boys routine
Superpitcher's faux Amy Grant routine
Cee-Lo's faux Jim Reeves routine

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 20 June 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. I managed to read 2 sentences of that DeRogatis piece before being consumed with such overwhelming rage that I had to click away lest my blood pressure become permanently screwed. He must own the biggest cock ranch in the world.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 20 June 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, when will somebody finally do the dirty deed of making "so-and-so was the drummer for Gay Dad" ILx t-shirts?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 20 June 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

2. Hinky Dory David Bowie

Hinky Dory

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 20 June 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I am inexplicably in love with the phrase "cock ranch," please send help thanks.

xpost: that new Bowie title is WAY more accurate!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 20 June 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I will pay cold hard cash for one of the aforementioned t-shirts

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 20 June 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Wouldn't it be better if they read "I Was The Drummer For Gay Dad"?

I might buy some transfers this week.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

size XXL for me please thanks. (oh yeah.)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"I LEARNED IT FROM YOU, GAY DAD! I LEARNED IT FROM YOU!"

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Is a cock ranch a place where the lil' testies roam?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, my mind is boggled quite enough as is w/o you adding your irreverent visions to the fray, thank you.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Blame it on the birthday peyote.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I'm blaming it on something else entirely! (though b-day peyote = a fine, fine gift, undoubtedly)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Peyote is supposed to be good for your sinuses. I'd like to try that some time.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The only vaguely tolerable thing on that page is Miranda Sawyer's OTM sleevenote.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

This is also discussed over at :
Best British Albums Ever Poll.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 20 June 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

This whole thing makes me want to die.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 20 June 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ha but Nick, your faves are Number 1 on this poll ! and Talk Talk: Spirit of Eden [33] is included.

Also, OMM is the most read music mag in Britain - so it is a mass media change agent.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 20 June 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

MY TOP 10
Morrissey

1. FOR YOUR PLEASURE Roxy Music *

* Morrissey claims he can only think of one truly great British album and this is it

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Jim, Kylie's Australian. Pay attention. But yeah, the Stone Roses at number 1, wtf.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it confirms that I don't really like British bands.

No Iron Maiden, wtf????

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Stone Roses is not a bad album to have at number 1. But no Dog Man Star or This is Hardcore which are two of the three best Brit albums ever (the other is The Queen is Dead, inevitably).

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of have the same attitude to these lists as I have to C-Man. Writing about them encourages a kind of misplaced "I'm the guy you love to hate!" notion, so I'll leave it at that.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

as that Paul Morley suggests these polls have some use - in they sample critics interests at a fixed point, what albums drops off compared to other polls, what comes back into fashion, stimulate debate of what missed out, what daft recent choices were included.

They also [rightly or wrongly] help educate the "teenage kids" about music history etc

In 1985 in Sounds magazine, as a 15 year old this poll:
http://www.rocklist.net/sound100.html
was my first exposure to critics alltime polls.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

They also [rightly or wrongly] help educate the "teenage kids" about music history etc

I lost about a year of quality music discovery time as a teenager through paying attention to one of those lists, and 99% of everything I bought because it was canonical lies mouldering, unlistened and dusty, in outlying corners of my room.

Again, Miranda Sawyer OT-fucking-M.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

As for shirts and all, there ARE the ILX c/d shirt designs Sean Carruthers has created, so theoretically that could be added as a kicker on the back or something...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

DeRo is OTM that the rest of the world, committed Anglophiles aside, wouldn't put the Stone Roses debut even in their top 100 British albums, let alone in the #1 slot, which clearly belongs to the Toy Dolls

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 21 June 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr DeRogatis' disdain for the Stone Roses is the only opinion of his I agree with.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

J0#n! get back to your faux Beach Boys routine!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

If Ashton Kutchner called you and asked for some ideas about how he could best "punk" Jim DeRo, what would you suggest?

Personally, I'd like to see Ashton's crew pose as MTV producers, telling him they plan to pick up Sound Options for MTV2. But only if he'll dress up like ReRun and dance during the closing credits.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Better yet, I'd like him to be visited by the "ghost" of Lester Bangs.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

didnt someone on gay dad produce young heart attack's new album? which by the way is a great load of rock.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i meant, someone IN gay dad.

oh never mind.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The first Stone Roses album is the perfect embodiment of some really admirable values that got thrown around in the UK circa '90 -- that's why it's on top. It's also pish.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Is DeRog taking a dig at Timberlake's critical acclaim with that Kylie comment (BTW Kylie rules, you Smoking Popes-obsessed saphead)

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

he thinks massive attack, nick drake, mbv, eno, robert wyatt and the fall are "cultish heroes"!!!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i always got the impression that massive attack and mbv were really commercially successful in the uk (correct me if i'm wrong, uk ilxors)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That's it, I hate music writers. Fuck everyone. I'm selling my critically loved CDs and going to Sam Goody and getting some old Days of the New CDs and that last Limp Bizkit album.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

DeRo digs the Smoking Popes? Wow. I think the only reason I ever liked them was cause I thought Josh Caterer was dreamy.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 21 June 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the only reason he liked them was because they were from Crystal Lake, IL, which is near Chicago. Big ups from the local big man, you know...

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 21 June 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on! If this was a yank list it would have Guns n Roses in the top 10 and probably Van Halen too. Stone Roses is a great album.

CRW (CRW), Monday, 21 June 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna buy a Stone Roses album and play it. To see if Jim's retarded.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Monday, 21 June 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

in all honesty, it's a pretty lame record

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It's relatively pleasant mood music

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember buying the Stone Roses album on the strength of "Fools Gold" and "I Wanna Be Adored", which are really good songs that could be called "great". There are a lot of other songs on the album as well that I don't remember. However I sold the CD after a year because I realized it had already aged terribly aside from the two tunes mentioned (which also dated a bit but at least were solid tunes) and I was bored by it. Mostly because the combination of mediocre beats, foppish twat vocals, and admittedly good guitar playing added up to an album that doesn't deserve to make the top 100, nor the top 10 of the year in which it was released ('88? '89? '90? doesn't matter...), nor the top fifty. Everyone is still sucking at this passionless, dull drone's teat for reasons that can only be chalked up to the remarkable staying power of their hype. Of course no one can be troubled to get behind something with less hype from Britain like the The's Dusk, that self-titled Charlatans record from '95, or maybe one of Saint Etienne's better ones, all of which are better than the Stone Roses, which in the final analysis is damning with faint praise.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite. Also a double DVD set of Roses videos/TV appearances has just arrived in the post this morning, a couple of weeks ahead of the release date. What fortuitous timing

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

again miranda sawyer was obv-fucking-ous, don't you mean? de ro was right about the stone roses. i can't even be arsed to discuss the rest...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to buy this when I saw it in tesco, but I bought milk, bread, oranges and tins of soup instead. Lists = boring, folly, k-lame canonism etc etc etc yakka yakka yakka:

1/ king crimson "in the court of the crimson king"
2/ tim blake "blake's new jerusalem"
3/ throbbing gristle "heathen earth"
4/ magazine "secondhand daylight"
5/ omd "architecture and morality"
6/ yes "the yes album"
7/ van der graaf generator "h to he who am the only one"
8/ twelfth night "fact and fiction"
9/ hawkwind "hall of the mountain grill"
10/ human league "travelogue"

see, my list only contains 10 items, that i just typed in off the top of my head, but it totally pwnz0rz the observer's boring list.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"Penguin Eggs" by Nic Jones is far too good an album to turn up in a shitty list in the Observer. I think this poll must be fixed.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

see, what they should do, is list every british pop/rock album ever made since, say 1963, and list them in order of how good they are. This gargantuan undertaking would surely be a project worthy of the talents of the obmag's k-31337 team ov record reviewers and music tase arbiters, heh.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'll have to say that t0ny p4rs0nz' bit is the worst thing I have read in a long long time. It's 4m4nd4 pl4t3ll in new statesman type bad.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

terry hall's list is so good they print it twice you'll notice.

daft beggars.
