Q TOP FIVE UK ALBUMS
1. Oasis - Definitely Maybe
2. The Beatles - Revolver
3. Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks
4. Radiohead - OK Computer
5. The Clash - London Calling

The Smiths' The Queen Is Dead makes number eight, while Led Zeppelin's third album from 1970 reaches nine.

Blue Lines by Massive Attack is the highest placed dance album at 10 in the list.

Others include Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, Parklife by Blur, Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd and the Queen album A Night At The Opera.

Oasis' first album is a favourite of fans and critics
Oasis have beaten their heroes The Beatles to win a poll of the best British albums of all time.
The Britpop band's 1994 debut was voted ahead of the Beatles' 1966 classic Revolver to top the list in Q magazine.

The Beatles' great rivals the Rolling Stones make the top 10 with their 1968 album Beggars Banquet at seven.

Other albums in the poll of 50 Q writers include The Clash's London Calling, OK Computer by Radiohead and David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust.

I didn't realize that "Definitely Maybe" was now considered a superior album to the more popular "Morning Glory". I've always thought DM was the far better record.

Nevertheless, any Best Albums Ever list which puts Oasis at #1 is a list that sucks monkey balls.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 29 May 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

A list that puts any Oasis record above 101rst place sucks massive hairy gorilla scrotum.

Isn't Van the Twat from Eire, anyway?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 29 May 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Good grief. Does churning out these lists really still put sales on magazines? There was a time when they seemed like a special event.

Greedy guts.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 29 May 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to stop meself.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 May 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

That McCarthy album is great. I like McCarthy cause the problem I have with most indiepop jangle C86 and Sarah stuff is the weebling lyrics about boys and girls. The jangle itself is quite nice.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 29 May 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The lyrics are so bitter. I used to listen to it at work before I went mad and killed all those people.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 May 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

but his voice, yikes.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 29 May 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that the fact he sings like that whilst denouncing Capitalism is part of their charm.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Before I even opened this up, I was going to proclaim Oasis's "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" as my personal favorite, but I am SHOCKED to find them as number one. I love the band as much as anyone else, and find Morning Glory as near as musical perfection as any band had come since Exile on Main Street (truly the greatest album ever). But to have Definitely Maybe as number one blows my mind.

Also for Paranoid being on there, yes i know it is the "standard" but despite what critics don't always seem to understand is that Sabbath doesn't just start on Paranoid and end on Iron Man. Personally I think Sabbath Bloody Sabbath should have gotten on there, its heavy yet innovative.

And I'm more than slightly offended by Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast" another of my 10 favorite albums of all time, being put behind Robbie Williams? Come on.

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

However you look at it, it's a staggeringly stupid and cloth-eared poll.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I won't count these, because another album by these bands are already on the chart : Joy Division -- Unknown Pleasures, SFA -- Guerrilla, Primal Scream -- XTRMNTR
41. Stereolab -- Mars Audiac Quintet
40. Depeche Mode -- Violator
39. Something by Mogwai
38. Something by Orbital, it should be In Sides, but I'd settle for alternatives

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I love his voice. I can't explain why.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Led Zeppelin's third album fuck yeah! I always feel like I'm the only one in the universe who has that as a fave Led Zep album.

Also, McCarthy are a certainly criminally underrated and/or unknown band.

Fave Brit albums, my ass. My God, my post on this subject would be so dreadfully long you'd have to ban me from this site forever.

21. Tricky - Maxinquaye

(I always feel like I'm the only one in the universe who has that as a fave Led Zep album. Nah, that's my fave too. :)

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 30 May 2004 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

20. New Order - Movement (I am surprised that NO are neither in the Q list nor have been chosen by any ILMer yet.)
19. Brian Eno - Another Green World
18. Coctau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas

What really puzzles me about this list is that people chose second best or third best albums by the bands. Nick Drake's Bryter Later is his weakest record, totally overproduced. Radiohead's Amnesiac or even Hail to the Thief are much better than the crappy overhyped OK Computer. Blur's Parklife is shallow pop shite. Modern Life Is Rubbish or 13 are highly superior. I used to love Disintegration but 17 Seconds is much more intense, much stronger. I never understood the appeal of Blue Lines. I'd choose Mezzanine or maybe even 100th Window from Massive Attack.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Sunday, 30 May 2004 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Cocteau Twins of course. Will Liz ever forgive me this?

12. The Blue Nile - 'Hats'
11. Kevin Ayers - 'Joy of a Toy'
10. Robyn Hitchcock - 'I Often Dream of Trains'
9. Prefab Sprout - 'Jordan: The Comeback' (my personal favourite, though SMcQ is magnificent too... 'Swoon' sounds underrated, also)

7. Robert Wyatt - 'Rock Bottom' (of course)
6. Aztec Camera - 'High Land High Rain'

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Sunday, 30 May 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't this Q list coincide with the release of Definitely Maybe's 10th anniversary re-issue? that's annoying.

ice water, Sunday, 30 May 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I couldn't see these

Henry Cow - Unrest (would like to hear In Praise of Learning)

um, what?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 20 June 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i reckon...
meaning that post-punk has become trendy the past few years, therefore more critics rate: gang of 4 and slits, than they would say 5 years ago.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 20 June 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i was more surprised by metal box at 10. as a whole the list is surprisingly un-trendy, though.

at least this list doesn't have bloody "everything must go" in the top 25.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 20 June 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Penguin Eggs by Nic Jones is a fucking great album

Vashti Bunyan's really taken off with everyone

Quite surprised Let it Bleed is the poor relation of the Stones entries

#99 is pish

It should have made way for Leige and Leif but for some reason people are scared of it
