Afroman

Maybe some people in UK haven't heard it, I'm not sure, but he's the brilliant genius with the "because I got high" song that for some reason spread way beyond the web onto Howard Stern and now I just heard it in a commercial on television.

This song is pathetic, people. "I was gonna clean my room, but then I got high? I was gonna go to class, but then I got high?! I was gonna cheat and I coulda passed, but then I got high, then I got high, then I got high...." Every verse is just a different incident that he would have done differently if he didn't get high. I think he ends up in the gutter, but he's obviously happy about it because he's laughing (to himself multitracked, no less, as if it's a bunch of stoned people having a good time). And the chorus is no different from the verses. It goes like this, "Yeah, yeah--- because I got high, because I got high, because I got hi-iiiigh..."

Please tell me this didn't grab you and make you say, "Now that's witty. This Afroman intrigues me."

Nude Spock, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All songs about dope are rubbish. Except "Searchin For My Rizla" by Ratpack.

Tom, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i don't think anybody but a high times-subscribing, cheech and chong watching, heavily stoned moron is going to call it 'witty.' personally, i find it amusing for its willful stupidity and the very obvious taking-the-piss self indulgent quality.

your null fame, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's huge in america. played under the end credits of 'jay and silent bob' and a bunch of the people left in the theatre were singing along.

this should not surprise any of you.

maura, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I had it my way, nobody would find this amusing! Seriously, it's kind of disappointing that this schmuck gets lucky on this halfass song. I hear he walks around Manhattan with a shirt that reads "AFROMAN" now, believe it or not.

Nude Spock, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seriously, it's kind of disappointing that this schmuck gets lucky on this halfass song.

Well, but isn't the whole point the half-assedness of it? Like, "I was going to record a really great song, but then I got high?" I must admit that I find this pretty amusing, at least up until the "I was gonna pay my child support," at which I point I feel a twinge of creeped-out-ness. I doubt I'll care to hear it more than two or three more times, though, so I'm bracing for the annoyance that's surely building.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Note: you could claim a weird (though unintentional) brilliance in that it could be read as an anti-drug song, which is allowing its airplay and video play (with a big implied wink). As in: it's a song about drugs that lets you read it however you feel about drugs -- if you're doing bonghits while listening, you're probably going to laugh your ass off, and if your grandmother listens to it, she might think this Afroman is quite a truth-telling young man.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, I know. It's just a dumb song all around. Either he's proud of being a fuckup (in these fake scenerios) or else it's an antidrug message. Stupid. I'm sure we could've all done this with one brain tied behind our back in the music lab at our college and we would have played it once or twice and realized it was stupid and embarrassing and throw it away!

Nude spock, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

On the list of Insults to the Good Name of American Popular Culture, I'd say this think ranks above such monstrosities as Aaron Carter and _Temptation Island_.

four years pass...
I've been listened to this song at Radio1 in 2004 or start of 2005. It was in the middle of the night. I was scared. I never knew the author of this "opus?". And everytime I see this playing in a brazilian radio, I fall myself in a conseption that something's just starting to happen with music... For bad, of course!
And this man won a grammy!

That's a funny way of spelling "classic."

I have it on green vinyl!

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Also, as someone who has smoked pot a total of once in his life (why would I want to take a drug that makes me boring), I like to think of it as a self-aware anti-pot pro-pot song. Also, when was the last time something so half-assed sounding was on rap radio? It's like Beat Happening getting a song on MTV!

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

this is such a great great song - for ALL the reasons nitsuh mentions above, but it also just SOUNDS good through a big stereo despite its obvious cheapness, i mean it's a novelty track but the music is great! i think its placement over the end credits to whatever that kevin smith movie probably did a lot for it above and beyond just the exposure.. most cinemas have sound systems that put home stereos to shame...

what i am a little more embarrassed about is the fact that i now actually love almost all of afroman's music. (??)

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I've never thought about him the same way since finding out all the friends joking around in the background of his tracks were just him. there's something about imagining him recording all the little laughs and adlibs to tag onto his own jokes that makes me a little sad

didn't he get some ridiculous multi album deal off the strength off his one hit? maybe he's just fulfilling a contract? but who is his an audience?

The whole thing is hilarious and weirdly reminds me of Michael Kohlhaas (speaking here of the Kleist novella, not the actual historical incident that inspired it, nor the movie adaptation I haven't seen)

If you don't know the plot: Kohlhaas, a horse trader en route to market, gets a couple of his best horses seized by a corrupt baron who says "You gotta pay the horse tariff if you want to pass by my road." On the return trip, having confirmed with people at the market that the horse tariff isn't a real thing, he goes to collect his horses and finds that they've been worked nearly to death in the baron's fields. He brings his case to a series of local authorities, saying "The baron must feed and groom my horses until they're restored to their former condition!" But most of the local authorities are the baron's relatives, and after they've all denied him justice, Kohlhaas raises an army and starts burning down houses and barns across the countryside. And all the while, he keeps posting these open letters, in which he tells the public that his campaign of terror will continue until the baron repairs the damage done to his horses.
