duane, Monday, 6 January 2003 20:59 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

Seen 'em right here in the US; they're one of the best live punk bands out there.

lots of energy... toody, toody has the most gorgeous voice ever

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 6 January 2003 23:02 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

I keep meaning to get out and see'em when they're in Boston. I never seem to make it..

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 00:20 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

I've never seen them live, but I've always found their records pretty unlistenable. They are recorded terribly, and Fred Cole (is that his name?) sounds like a man dying from emphysema.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 00:27 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

I was one of the few people to hang around for Dead Moon at All Tomorrow's Parties in England last year. They played to a room that was barely a quarter full, but they were seriously incredible.

Jason J, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 11:16 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

Was really disappointed they did do other gigs whilst over for ATP, as I missed their only other appearence in the UK years & years ago. Luckily got to finally see them in the US a few months back. Great stuff.

Wondering Boy Poet, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:22 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

I saw at ATP last year too - was intrigued by Albini's write up on them - it made them sound amazingly awful and for some reason the legendary Mission of Burma weren't grabbing me so i went down to check Dead Moon for a few minutes and was blown away.

tigerclawskank, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:54 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

A local band (well, almost, I'm in Salem) that I like to support in theory, for reasons of endurance alone. But the music, I dunno, anyone else find it a little samey? Or is that the point? Maybe they ought to try and do that mono thing live.

Paula G., Tuesday, 7 January 2003 17:13 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

Hey, Billy Childish does mostly the same thing over and over again and he still rocks. So yay Dead Moon!

You missed one of the best live rock bands of all time.

BUT I'm sure Pierced Arrows will be just as good in time. I mean, Fred and Toody? They can do no wrong. There is NO bad Fred Cole record.

The DVD is the shit.

BigLurks, Sunday, 11 May 2008 20:48 (ten years ago) Permalink

i concur!

tehresa, Sunday, 11 May 2008 20:53 (ten years ago) Permalink

Yeah, DVD is really awesome and kind of inspiring shit.

ian, Monday, 12 May 2008 01:02 (ten years ago) Permalink

Both live albums about equally good. Which is to say both GREAT, you can't really go wrong. My favorite, tho, is that 2x10" live thing they split with Napalm Beach. Not 'cuz it's so much better overall (it ain't), but 'cuz the version of "54-40 or Fight" on that is the best damn thing Dead Moon ever did. Gives me chills to this day.

contenderizer, Monday, 12 May 2008 01:05 (ten years ago) Permalink

What exactly happened to Andrew Loomis? He really seemed in it 'til the end in that DVD.

RabiesAngentleman, Monday, 12 May 2008 01:18 (ten years ago) Permalink

i think there was an incident on tour, likely stemming him his serious alcohol problem? don't really know any details.

ian, Monday, 12 May 2008 02:25 (ten years ago) Permalink

Pity, he was so likable.

RabiesAngentleman, Monday, 12 May 2008 13:22 (ten years ago) Permalink

the best part of the dvd is where fred cole is doing an interview with the most clueless man ever.

ian, Monday, 12 May 2008 16:19 (ten years ago) Permalink

the best part of the DVD is where he forces the tour van to make a detour to a casino so they can play slots all night after EVERY SHOW lol

dmr, Monday, 12 May 2008 17:08 (ten years ago) Permalink

maybe there is another thread for this but who's heard the Pierced Arrows full-length? as good as DM?

dmr, Monday, 12 May 2008 17:10 (ten years ago) Permalink

Pierced Arrows - the thread

I didn't know they had an album out! cool.

sleeve, Monday, 12 May 2008 17:41 (ten years ago) Permalink

I googled their website, it looks like they have one 7" and one LP / CD

dmr, Monday, 12 May 2008 17:51 (ten years ago) Permalink

the single is great, I have that. totally recommended.

sleeve, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:08 (ten years ago) Permalink

no (non-scummy) reason to get the 7" if i get the LP right?

69, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:12 (ten years ago) Permalink

no, looks like both tracks are on teh LP.

Do these guys not smoke pot/do any drugs? One of my friends offered them a joint after a show and they declined -- when talking about one of Fred's early guitar players freaking out on acid in the DVD, they quickly say something about "why do you think we're so against dope?" I just always pictured them as the crazy old hard-partying couple.

Reatards Unite, Saturday, 10 January 2009 06:40 (nine years ago) Permalink

Then again, there's that hardcore survivor, trial by fire vibe. Kinda goes hand in hand with AlAnon, recovery program, etc. By the time you're fifty-something, anyway.

P.S. Buy the Rats LP on MssssP.

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Saturday, 10 January 2009 07:17 (nine years ago) Permalink

Reatards Unite, Saturday, 10 January 2009 07:19 (nine years ago) Permalink

Record stores! Dunno how many copies, but probly few. Vinyl only. First one only (S/T).

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Saturday, 10 January 2009 07:23 (nine years ago) Permalink

Not exactly in print, but recent so still available is what I mean. Plus SO DAMN GOOD.

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Saturday, 10 January 2009 07:24 (nine years ago) Permalink

tylerw, Thursday, 23 June 2011 18:47 (seven years ago) Permalink

I like the first Rats and REALLY REALLY like Intermittent Signals, so In A Desperate Red sounds like it'd be a winner.
I asked Fred about that when Pierced Arrows played at a High School in town a couple years ago and he either didn't hear me (quite possible from what I understand of his hearing troubles) or just didn't feel like talking about it.

I just bought all three of the reissues this afternoon. They sound great, infinitely preferable to the shitty MP3s I had before. Wouldn't have thought remastering would make such a difference, hats off to Mr. Timothy Stollenwerk.
