First sighted on: THE HOUSE OF SUN-EL: Sun-El Musician, Simmy, Mlindo The Vocalist, and other related artists

Her debut album is a delight and "Your Love" is a potential song of the summer

Let us now sing praises

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 20 July 2020 16:26 (two weeks ago) link

these praises have already been sung:

you're not gonna believe this but the Azana is beautiful music

― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), vrijdag 17 juli 2020 19:17 bookmarkflaglink

yep, it's good. A bit moodier than I was expecting in some way, and it's a lot to take in, but "Egoli" and especially "Bafazi" stood out on first pass

― rob, vrijdag 17 juli 2020 19:26 bookmarkflaglink

reminded me of 90s downtempo in spots, strangely enough

― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), vrijdag 17 juli 2020 19:31 bookmarkflaglink

"Egoli" def had that vibe. My possibly off-base first impression is that she followed the Samthing template and the first half is less upbeat and dancey (the "moodiness") and things pick up and bliss out in the second (?)

― rob, vrijdag 17 juli 2020 19:33 bookmarkflaglink

I’m at “Bafazi” and holy fuck

― No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), vrijdag 17 juli 2020 21:23 bookmarkflaglink

I'm pretty sure the next two are sublime too, but I actually got halfway through Bafazi and started it over so I could relive it XD

― rob, vrijdag 17 juli 2020 21:29 bookmarkflaglink

Gorgeous album, nothing much else to say rn, just gorgeous. Azana is so wonderful and commanding throughout.

I did notice that Claudio x Kenza produced the majority of the tracks, including “Egoli” and “Bafazi”, while Sun-El is credited for just four.

From this I conclude that Sun-El is not just an incredible producer with a great eye for talent but is probably a fantastic mentor as well.

impossible not to close your eyes and let the ~vibes~ wash over on bafazi

further praises necessary

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 20 July 2020 17:31 (two weeks ago) link

instant classic i'd say

dyl, Monday, 20 July 2020 23:13 (two weeks ago) link

Ummm it's either just me or a coincidence, but 'Your Love' seems to reference the coda of 'Four Horsemen' by Aphrodite's Child...

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 20 July 2020 23:26 (two weeks ago) link

i mentioned it on the amapiano thread but I dig the light touch of Jill Scott "He Loves Me" interpolation in Ngize Ngifike

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 20 July 2020 23:40 (two weeks ago) link

I haven't heard the album yet but every track I've heard from her so far has been amazing. one more addition to my rapidly expanding "to check out in 2020" list.

Roz, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 08:54 (two weeks ago) link

all the other tracks are equally amazing!

meanwhile, further praises:

azana album is gorgeous of course

btw, I’m not quite sure what is meant by “90s downtempo”- is it US-ish for trip hop? what are some artists/tracks that have that Azana vibe?
“Egoli” for instance, the intro in particular, reminds me more of Jill Scott (her again!), I think.

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 11:48 (two weeks ago) link

yeah trip hop. I'm thinking of someone like Esthero, tho obv Jill Scott is a good comparison too.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 16:25 (two weeks ago) link

okay, I see. Jill Scott not trip hop tho and from the next decade? will check out Esthero, whom I’d never heard of before. thanx!

not to turn this into a recommendation thread but I think some of the tracks on this album (from 1999 iirc) would be up your alley:

BC: if it's not too low hanging fruit and you don't already listen to marsha ambrosius/floetry, I imagine that would be a find for you.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 19:36 (two weeks ago) link

This is sublime.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 19:59 (two weeks ago) link

listening thru for 2nd time now. this is gonna be one of those albums I will try to deny myself the pleasure of listening to often in fear of it becoming played out.

apple music has all the lyrics viewable. if only there was a built-in translation option.

This should be its own thread topic. I do this soo much

octobeard, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 21:45 (two weeks ago) link

Thanx for the recommendations.
I love Floetry and Marsha Ambrosius solo, but I haven’t listened to either in ages, should rectify. Curious about the Zap Mama. Only was aware of them at the time of their debut album, which was quite big over here.

hate to agree with everyone but "bafazi" really is amazing

i think the tracks i like best are toward the middle and end but there are no weak tracks by any means

dyl, Thursday, 23 July 2020 02:26 (two weeks ago) link

it's solid top to bottom, yes
