I like how you're faithfully including all Flying Saucer Attack albums in these polls, but even as a fan, that seems a bit much no?

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 11:54 (four years ago) link

This is the first of these polls where most of my favourites are missing but still some good stuff - it's probably between Autechre and Disco Inferno.

Going down the list, thinking it was underwhelming compared to the other years/polls, and then I saw Therapy? - Troublegum which is literally one of my favorite albums of all time ever, by anyone, and it was an easy choice.

big city slam (Spottie), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 16:43 (four years ago) link

Great year, arguably best of the 90s.

List of those worthy of consideration is massive, so can understand why so much was missed. My honour roll:

Aphex Twin - SAW II
Auteurs- Now I’m a Cowboy
Blur - Parklife
Ry Cooder/Ali Farke Toure - Talking Timbuktu
Divine Comedy - Promenade
Jan Garbarek/Hilliard Ensemble - Officium
Nas - Illmatic
Nirvana - MTV Unplugged
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Portishead - Dummy
Pulp - His n’ Hers
Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle
Sparks - Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins
Suede - Dog Man Star
OST - Natural Born Killers

Ordinarily would have went fo Morrissey, but his behaviour has soured the record for me, so either Protection or Tical.

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 16:46 (four years ago) link

Agree with a lot of those omissions Dan. Suede and The Divine Comedy are easily my two favourite albums from this year. I'd add The Cardigans, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Saint Etienne, Magnetic Fields, Jeru The Damaja, Madonna, Lush and Gang Starr too.

So an easy vote for St Et from the list, although I *ducks* prefer the 1996 re-release...

You are not alone! That's the standard version in my head now. I had a tape dub of the original for years but procured the 1996 version after the big ILM StEt poll many years ago. It was popular around here at that time and I... succumbed to peer pressure.

I tried to listen to Snivilisation recently and couldn't get along with it except for Are We Here? which funny enough at the time I thought was one of those missing the point token d&b tracks by artists usually known for techno. There are some good mixes on the CD single.

Also gone right off the Hex mopeathon.

Amber is of its time but in a very good way. Can't think of anything I'd vote for ahead of that, except maybe Hootie.

I tried to listen to Snivilisation recently and couldn't get along with it except for Are We Here? which funny enough at the time I thought was one of those missing the point token d&b tracks by artists usually known for techno.

Snivilization was my first Orbital album and I pretty much loved every bit of it from the jump. It was the first dance album I bought that felt like it was telling me a story as opposed to just flinging banger after banger at me.

brigadier pudding (DJP), Thursday, 25 July 2019 17:27 (four years ago) link

I still prefer the albums either side of it though

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 25 July 2019 18:29 (four years ago) link

I think I'm the same although I haven't listened to Snivilisation in a long time. In Sides was the first Orbital record I heard and I absolutely loved it so I worked backwards from there. Snivilisation definitely took some time getting into.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 25 July 2019 19:01 (four years ago) link

I mean, In Sides is one of the best albums ever recorded and Brown is brilliant back to front. It's not really knocking Snivilization to like those other two more.

Aloha, suit up.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Thursday, 25 July 2019 19:15 (four years ago) link

For me it's In Sides > Sniv > Middle of Nowhere > Orbital 2 but I think they're all pretty close. Wonky is up there somewhere too.

Sniv was the first one I really loved though. For whatever reason "I Wish I Had Duck Feet" hit me in a way nothing else really has since. And the finale "Attached" still sounds like nothing else.

frogbs, Thursday, 25 July 2019 19:20 (four years ago) link

Snivilization is definitely a listen at home on headphones album. When you see them live you prefer the bangers on the other albums. Which is exactly what you got on the insides tour. think they only played one tracks from Snivilization .
Snivilization is definitely best listened to all the way through. So i imagine that tour may have been really good (but I bet everyone wanted the bangers from theearlir stuff, lol)

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 25 July 2019 20:50 (four years ago) link

Snivilisation isn't as good as Brown or In Sides, and got a little overpraised in the music press at the time. It's still very good though, obviously.

obscur-ish stuff from this year i like

aby ngana diop - littal

bob hund - bob hund 2
bondage fruit - s/t
brainiac - bonsai superstar
cheikha rimitti - sidi mansour
cosmic psychos - self totalled
dmitri pokrovsky ensemble - les noces
evan parker - 50th birthday concert
giant ant farm - fortune
gorky's zygotic mynci - tatay

il giardino armonico - les quatre saisons

john frusciante - niandra lades and usually just a t-shirt
kalevi aho - black birds
karol szymanowski - stabat mater, litany to the virgin mary, symphony no. 3 (CBSO)
latin playboys - s/t
loren maazel - ravel: l'enfant et les sortileges
man or astroman? - destroy all astromen!
mannasseh - mannasseh meets the equalizer
peres/ensemble organum - chant corse: manuscrits franciscains
yuzo koshiro and motohiro kawashima - streets of rage iii
naseer shamma - le luth de bagdad
nobuo uematsu - final fantasy vi
optical*8 - bug
organized konfusion - stress: the extinction agenda
playa 1 and bloody bones - crime rate sky high
the prayer chain - humb
prince - come
s.e. rogie - dead men don't smoke marijuana
woob - 1194
x-legged sally - eggs and ashes
dubovij gaaj - stop the killing dolphins
5uu's - hunger's teeth

apparently i just gave up on metal at this point, which i guess makes sense. i'm not super into first wave black metal. that kyuss album is good, i guess. groundwork's "today we will not be invisible nor silent" is pretty good post-rorschach hardcore, though not as good as "protestant".

gonna just have to accept that these polls are probably gonna exclude 8-10 classic rap albums to year.

I just dont know much about rap, I'm afraid. That is why Mike is choosing half of the albums but he likes a lot of different music too and it is really hard to cut a list down to 25 choices each.

And these are supposed to be personal lists rather than the 'canon' and i've polled the canon many times before.

Its hard to balance so we dont end up with a poll of albums only 10 people have heard of and one that will allow 100+ ilxors to vote without having to only include the 'canon' or biggest selling albums.

But I think almost everyone can find one album to vote for and we only have one vote anyway.

and a reminder that the canon albums for 94 are over here Best Album on OUR Favourite Albums of......1994! Part II : ILM Loves Its Canon!!!

I don't think we will be doing two polls for the rest of the decade though. Which might mean a lot of popular albums will just have to miss out.
