Can anyone recommend producers who sound like Coucou Chloe? I don't really follow this scene too closely but I found out about her through the RA best tracks of 2017 list and I think she's super

One of our own has had a dear little moment with his instruments:

Personally I like 'doom' and 'halo' more than her EP w/vocals, but this record by Mhysa might be a good parallel?

Ta. I heard some stuff by Mhysa and thought it was pretty good, might do a bit more digging

Ooh, also this EP by Lyzza, which is great:

I'm on the look out for compilations of contemporary global/outernational dance music comps such as the Enchufada Upper Cuts comp and the Sounds of Sisso comp - both of which are amazing. Any more good ones?

This Coucou Chloe thing is great, but why does it remind me a bit of Die Antwoord? Think it's her voice

FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Thursday, 11 January 2018 15:00 (seven months ago) Permalink

I'm already a little behind in listening but Fabric's in-house label Houndstooth has a compilation that'd fit this thread that's being released over a number of days on bandcamp:

Interesting release strategy, gives individual tracks some space for evaluation while you wait for some of the tantalizing things further down the tracklist

mh, Thursday, 11 January 2018 15:04 (seven months ago) Permalink

I like that idea.

I do have a track on this one (*full disclosure*), but it's a free comp with a really nice range of material imo. Ambient to club bootlegs with some slippery beats and rubato percussive pieces inbetween.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 11 January 2018 15:40 (seven months ago) Permalink

nice! I’ll check it out

This is an INCREDIBLE compilation from late last year. Not sure how I came across it, but it's got some insane cuts from Jlin, Zora Jones, Rashad and a cast of many other big names in dancehall, footwork and elsewhere:

This is a great thread already and I'm much happier having everything in one place

enjoying this album by тпсб
review from PS here:

on the shtick front, it's both a project from someone who probably isn't who they claim, and it's on blackest ever black, so I went in with a set of expectations but was pleasantly surprised. the mixing on the percussion is doing some really cool things with depth

mh, Friday, 19 January 2018 17:06 (six months ago) Permalink

xp yeah i'm ordinarily not too impressed w/ this style of music but i gave that visceral minds 2 a try based on the RA review and it was really good

the late great, Friday, 19 January 2018 17:07 (six months ago) Permalink

I loved that Zora Jones label mix from last year that had a bunch of Sinjin Hawke album tracks, but for some reason it didn't click for me as an album after it was released.

mh, Monday, 22 January 2018 23:50 (six months ago) Permalink

That's pretty dope ('Are You Still Hurt').

This isn't exactly my thing, but I went to school with this guy and was obsessed with his work at the time when he was making more beat-oriented music. Now he makes his own instruments and controllers and is involved in more academic spheres. But maybe some of you like long Buchla jams:

And on the club end of things, this She's Drunk ep is solid:

Dark synthpop duo MIRACLE return with their sophomore full-length and first album in over five years, The Strife Of Love In A Dream. Consisting of Steve Moore, one half of the progressive synth-rock duo Zombi and composer of contemporary horror soundtracks including The Guest and Mayhem plus vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Daniel O’Sullivan, known for his work with a myriad of art rock luminaries including Ulver, Grumbling Fur, Æthenor, Sunn O))), Guapo, Mothlite and This Is Not This Heat plus special guest drums from A.E. Paterra (Zombi, Majeure, Maserati), MIRACLE play moody, stylish, synth-driven pop that evokes vintage Depeche Mode at their most dramatic heights. Self-recorded over a four year span in London, New York and Pittsburgh and mastered by Matt Colton (Aphex Twin, Caribou, Flume) at Alchemy Mastering, London, The Strife Of Love In A Dream is an incredible display of synthpop composition, infectious arrangements and gothic lyricism that is nothing short of a modern masterpiece.

Checked this out via RA today and I'm into it. Russian blown-out electro.

Also this from Dis Fig, which sounds like it would work very well in the context it was made for (performance art score). I like the last few minutes a ton (ie the part with a beat).

Nihiloxica is like really dark stomping techno played by a fairly sizeable group of Bugandan percussionists and a synth player from Kampala

The Sounds of Sisso is this bonkers helium-driven thing that reminds me of Shangaan or footwork or something

Both are amazing

Great mix from one of my faves:

I've been gravitating away from the super noisy end of things, my ears can't take it, but his choice of textures are always almost soothing, while still being distorted and mangled.
(one of mine in there too, full disclosure)

Also, new on NON, I like the idea of this (apparently all sounds generated with saxophone initially but processed beyond recognition):

not to direct people away from ilx but i noticed that Patten put together this new message board that seems like it's filled with people who pay attention to this sort of stuff. kind of dissensus-y, but more critical of the Reynolds/Fisher ethos

imo dissensus always was really dry in how they talked about music, any personal reactions were about as deep as “this is a tune”

I like that but I don't know if at the end of the day I totally understand some of this rolling experimental electronic misfit club music. Stuff like that, part of me is like, when does the beat drop? I know how cliche that is but like, there's no reason for their not to be a beat! It's beautiful melodic techno. Throw in a kick drum for us. I see the promo calls it "DJ tools" but that's what B-sides are for.

dan selzer, Friday, 13 July 2018 20:32 (one month ago) Permalink

bit of an older release (2017), but still engaging -

"This first volume features a very small Eurorack synthesizer, using primarily Mannequins brand modules and a touchplate keyboard. Every track is played live with no overdubs."

this struck me with its exciting timbres / energy, again, exploring modular synthesis.
