Nothing to recommend at the moment. Just thought there should be a 2017 thread.

i like the new mac demarco song "this old dog." i don't think he gets enough credit for his songwriting, the image overshadows a lot of his talent. i though this 2015 mini-LP 'another one' was fantastic, he's a great songwriter & producer.

The Kelly Lee Owens debut seems to be in our wheelhouse. Mostly reminds me of the We Love album on Bpitch from 2010.

As we already have a "twee/indie pop" thread playllist, i'm gonna conflate this with that and add tracks here:

Twee is a red line for me.

Sanpaku and Johnny Fever, where are you? Even your 7/10s do more for me than a lot of what I'm hearing just now

My meatspace is near New Orleans, but I find myself looking over the shoulder of real music fanatics from places like Poland, Argentina, and Greece for my tips.

If you're a French speaker or don't mind listening to things sung in French (that's me!), then this is phenomenal: La Féline's 'Triomphe'

track 2, Le Royaume, is really good but I can't pinpoint what the melody is the same as. reminds me of Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit or Tomorrow Never Knows or something but that's not what I'm thinking of...

It sounded familiar to me as well, but I just figured it was some Stereolab song I'd never figure out because who knows which songs go to which titles.

^ Very nice!

New debut album by Noga Erez from Tel Aviv, who seems like a really interesting artist. More to come hopefully. (it's 'glitchy' electro pop fwiw)

Yeah, I heard a couple Noga Erez songs last year that were really intriguing (she may have even been in the thread?), but the album is super cool.

10 minutes ago, I learned Kaleida released the EP Detune in 2016: Detune / It's Not Right / Power / A Forest

A Cure cover? From their best period, no less? Then 5 minutes ago, I found Kaleida's debut Tear The Roots will drop Sept 15: Convolution / Echo Saw You / All The Pretty Pieces / Division / Free / Think (Clean) / Coco / Meter / House Of Pulp / 99 Luftballons / Tear The Roots. Pretty much all new besides "Think"

An early sample:

yes! I love this pair, that voice reminds me of Tracey Thorn so much. They had a really good mixtape of influences on their Soundcloud last time I checked.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 12 July 2017 09:10 (seven months ago) Permalink

they're so good!! so happy to hear they're getting to release a full-length

joshywinty (josh), Wednesday, 12 July 2017 16:20 (seven months ago) Permalink

BTW, "A Forest" is a bandcamp freebie.

i don't really know what this thread is about, and haven't kept up with it, but is anyone talking about japanese breakfast anywhere?

I'm just listening to it, but not talking about it.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet as I don't really follow the thread but this song 'Your Wife' by Self Esteem is great:

I saw this thread come up and thought "oh yeah, there was something I wanted to share here, what was it...?" And it was that same Self Esteem track, so yeah +1 on that.

I know pop music is littered with repeating motifs but that Anna of the North track is too close to Bette Davis Eyes for comfort.

Something about the bassline's particular style of octave jumping brings to mind this fantastic 80s synthpop track though:

This is over a year old but didn't see any mention of it in the 2016 thread. This is my favorite of the live versions on Youtube (which I think are better than the studio version). So beautiful!
