These tracks at the top are really pulling away -- 117 point difference between #100 and #50, which is about the same points difference between #26 -#15.

That bottom 50 was exceptionally tight though, with all those ties.

please explain unfinished sympathy to me

NIRVANA - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (615 points, 30 votes, 1 first place vote)

"If you can not still turn up the fuckin' stereo and feel that "feeling" to the opening chords of "Smells Like Teen-spirit" then stop being a Rock Snob and trade your copies of Nevermind and In Utero and Bleach in at the used CD shoppe (maybe they'll go to a good home, you can keep Unplugged to play at Tuesday's wine and cheese party)and see if you can get a pristine copy of Mozart's Requiem to play at your funeral 'cause Baby, it's O-V-E-R."

BLACKSTREET - "No Diggity" (616 points, 31 votes, 2 first place votes)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000006TGV.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

"Riley was interviewed by MTV years back and mentioned how the track was laying down the foundations for a 'heavier r n' b' sound. the guitar lick and 'mmm hmmm' vocal are lifted straight from old blues and you get the impression Moby has spent a while now trying to imitate what they've done here. addding a Dre style beat and the ragtime-ish piano...its such a great hook - total head nodding booty shaking stuff."

having some trouble finding comments for this one, dammit.

Well, "from the Dr Dolittle soundtrack" says it all, really.

Vasquesz, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

90 down, 10 to go.

some who have showed up show up again, some who have never showed up finally make an appearance, and some you really think are gonna make it are buried somewhere down around #118 or #146...

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Would "Common People" make more sense to Americans if it was repackaged for that market as "Southern People"?

-- Tim Finney (tfinne...), November 10th, 2004 4:00 AM. (later)

No. It might make some sense if it was "Black People".

-- Spencer Chow (spencercho...), November 10th, 2004 4:03 AM. (lat

This is such a brilliant idea. Someone should do an amended cover version and make no attempt to make it scan properly.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, laid is def at 118 or 146.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

they did, it's called "pretty fly for a white guy"

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, so a whole bunch of stuff that most of us thought would be in the top ten finished outside it, so what's left? I'll guess:

10. New Order -- Regret
9. Orbital -- Chime
8. Daft Punk -- Da Funk
7. Geto Boys - "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me"
6. Breeders - "Cannonball"
5. Warren G. f/ Nate Dogg - "Regulate"
4. My Bloody Valentine - "Soon"
3. Deee-Lite - "Groove is in the Heart"
2. Radiohead - "Paranoid Android"
1. Pulp - "Common People"

Although I have very little confidence in these guesses -- I didn't expect a lot of those tracks to place this high. Swapping most of #11-20 with 1-10 is closer to what I was thinking.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

We've had 'Da Funk' already.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes we have, and that is the second time I've predicted its imminent arrival. It is clearly time for me to go to bed.

#9 Sebadoh, "Gimme Indie Rock"

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, looks like the top 20-11 is much better than the top 10... Well, at least Nirvana didn't make it as high as people thought it would. I'm still hoping for a surprise victory for "Regulate".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Regulate and Windowlicker will chart very highly - they're still well-loved but not anywhere near as overplayed as yer Born Slippys or Smells Like Teen Spirits.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

this is a fantastic list

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

GO EVERLONG

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time I see that mentioned I think of the Pixies cover of 'Winterlong' and how much I like it.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

who is everlong by? don't think I know it

given all the "ILM wuvs soppy indie pop" comments upthread, what are the odds on Sixpence None The Richer making the top ten?!? i noticed it got a few mentions in the 'what did you vote for?' thread

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Everlong = Foo Fighters

"I Kissed A Girl"!!! Hahahaha!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

20-11 is pretty great, in fact. I9-14 are all pretty classic. How could i have forgotten to vote for "Loser"?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

This is that annoying question, but can someone tell me what is so good about 'Loser'?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man bring on the last 10!!!

i've still got 11 that haven't shown up, by my best guess i'd say that no more than 3 of those will make it ("Soon", "Groove Is In The Heart" and "Lazarus") and probably only the first two actually will.

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

'Loser' is Beck's worst single

no way is 'Lazarus' gonna make it, wtf people

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

'Loser' is like, I dunno, the novelty single for people who think they're too smart for Afroman's 'Because I Got High'. It's so dreary!

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

in a tribe of chimpanzees i was a monkey. i love it. i don't know why.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i know - wishful thinking.
i just keep thinking of that part where the trumpets come crashing in with the drums and growling guitars and think "how could it NOT make the list???"

but then i could kinda think that about everything in my list (the part where delacy sings her first lines over the church organ/bass, the part where the first avh bline kicks in after the "sspppppiiinnnnnnnn spppppiiinnnnnnnn suuuugggggggggg-aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh" timestretch thingy and all hell breaks loose, etc)

but most of all i just feel sad that NO ONE else voted for "Autobiography". you should all download it when i get the folder put together and shared. i guarantee you'll either love it or you hate music

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost to steve m, obv

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh i'm gutted about De'Lacy too - best house track of the 90s

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, Everlong isn't gonna make it. Despite the fact that it's the single greatest rock song of the decade. And you know why? BECAUSE ILM CREAMS OVER UTTERLY LIFELESS SHIT LIKE "SAY MY NAME" AND BELLE AND SEBASTIAN, THAT'S WHY.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

rock...?...UTTERLY LIFELESS SHIT

i think you may be onto something!

:-p

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to 'Everlong' because it was on my Michel Gondry DVD. It was one of those records that seemed to be made by people without soul, for ants. Why are people so scared of living? Stick on 'Sleep The Clock Around'. Open the windows. The future is bright.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i like 'loser', but it didn't make my votes. there was a time i thought beck was just grebt.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)
