it's not a binary, ladies and gentlemen

A writer can provide historical context and explain how a song works; in my experience the two are interdependent.

this is one of the weirdest ILX bugbears. like is not the most tedious part of any 33 1/3 book when the writer goes through like a chapter going "then the vocals leap up in a dynamic swoop as cymbals crash and a plodding bassline thuds like a hailstorm, a crescendo that leads to the chorus" about an album you've heard 20 times and can pull up on Spotify any time

I actually like when an insightful writer breaks down a song (musically) to explain what makes it work -- the 33 1/3 book on Dummy did a pretty good job of this (to give 1 example). I find the sections that do a close reading of the lyrics to be a lot more superfluous.
Also, daily pitchfork reviews are reviewing new albums, so presumably you haven't heard them 20 times already.

enochroot, Friday, 5 June 2020 20:36 (three years ago) link

I enjoyed all of the music theory in the 33 1/3 on Aja.

jaymc, Friday, 5 June 2020 20:39 (three years ago) link

Former poster col did it quite well in his Bowie books.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 5 June 2020 20:41 (three years ago) link

Oh, I had no idea that he ever posted here! (I know him exclusively through Twitter.)

jaymc, Friday, 5 June 2020 20:46 (three years ago) link

Is that him what wrote Colony and the book on Low?

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 5 June 2020 20:48 (three years ago) link

Alfred's talking about Chris O'Leary (also didn't know he posted here though!)

dip to dup (rob), Friday, 5 June 2020 20:50 (three years ago) link

No, I believe he's the one behind the Pushing Ahead of the Dame Bowie song-by-song blog and the two resulting books compiled from that.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 5 June 2020 20:55 (three years ago) link

That makes me feel better! Colony was excellent, the 33 1/3 on Low not so much.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 5 June 2020 20:57 (three years ago) link

I am optimistic that soneday someone will figure out how to write about music

so their female Indian EIC is targeting POC for layoffs, or was that decision made above her head?

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Thursday, 18 June 2020 15:27 (three years ago) link

they just laid off their white male EIC so that characterization doesn't seem fair to me

a problem w/ media unions is that they're very good at addressing things like money but very bad (or at least inefficient) in addressing diversity issues (separate from pay), and the problem only gets more intractable in a climate such as this where every site is making cuts and nobody is hiring

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:25 (three years ago) link

their female Indian EIC
their white male EIC

wait, who is (or was) the EIC?

Position Position, Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:43 (three years ago) link

matthew schnipper was the (executive) editor they laid off

puja patel is the eic

I've been freelancing for Pitchfork since 2014. I won't be accepting any new assignments from them until they and Conde Nast reach an agreement with the union https://t.co/uUuWqSgVn4

EXCLUSIVE: Employees at the music and culture site Pitchfork are staging a work stoppage in protest of what they say are anti-union initiatives taken by the publication and its parent company, magazine publisher Condé Nasthttps://t.co/tGpCEeNZWX

— The Daily Beast (@thedailybeast) June 18, 2020

j., Thursday, 18 June 2020 17:44 (three years ago) link

Earlier this month, CEO Lynch dismissed the usefulness of unionization, saying in an all-staff email that while “some may believe that joining a union will protect their job, unfortunately, it’s just not the case. We all have seen the thousands of journalists who have lost their jobs over the last many months. The headwinds that the media industry is experiencing right now, combined with COVID-19, are just too strong for any union.”

“What will save jobs is an entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to be innovative when it comes to the ways we evolve and grow our business together,” he said.

fuck yoooooouuu

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 18 June 2020 17:47 (three years ago) link

the ways we evolve and grow our business together

holy shit, a shiver of disgust just went down my spine. the crappy place i work at has an "evolve" initiative that has never been explained and has no point, but usually involves some guy i don't know telling us about how we need to "grow our business together"

Karl Malone, Thursday, 18 June 2020 17:58 (three years ago) link

he's right that being in a union won't save your job -- journalists aren't cops. but it's also one of the best pitches for creating a union. get money now by extracting structural raises and get money later by bargaining and ratifying severance for when you get thrown out on the street, bcuz they will throw you out on the street

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 June 2020 18:07 (three years ago) link

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 19 June 2020 11:37 (three years ago) link

The new Neil Young album was awarded "Best New Reissue," but I don't think it's a reissue (the material is old, but it's a new album)?

OG Honeymoon Ave (morrisp), Thursday, 25 June 2020 14:50 (three years ago) link

it's not a reissue but it's hard to fit what it is into stamp form. "best new formerly lost music"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 June 2020 14:51 (three years ago) link

anyway even though it's not accurate i think it fits that tag better than bnm
