Speaking of annoying

gecs already placed, man
― ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:48 (six years ago)
in fact the music's meticulously arranged chamber-synth-pop with sudden deviations into thumping techno marries really well to the blunt affect she's always going for
i know i shouldn't mention this because one of the two songs literally features hval telling a story about listening to her own music and then crying, but the Lost Girls EP (LP? it's two songs, each about 15 minutes) shares some of these musical qualities - not so much thumping techno, more just electronic
― But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:48 (six years ago)
Here's a thing - is there less lettering on album covers these days? Maybe cos people are buying more vinyl and want a piece of artwork as well as the music within?
― doorstep jetski (dog latin), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:48 (six years ago)
lol I knew that was coming (re truth bombs) but nuh-uh
― TOO LOW, the Curator (imago), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:49 (six years ago)
If anything I'd argue covers with no words became more of a thing in response to the increase of streaming and the cover as small avatar

or maybe because more people are listening on streaming services where the artist and title are listed in giant bold letters at all times.

xp, right
browsing thru the Dawn Richard. Some good, modern-funky production. But I can't get with this style of pop-rnb singing. Feel like it'd be my fav album if I was a 15 yr old girl tho.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:50 (six years ago)
catching up, but Hval and Gecs were my number one and two, and those plus the two Black Dresses albums fully encapsulated what 2019 felt like to me.
― fffv, Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:50 (six years ago)
I'mma go out on a limb and say that Polachek and gecs are both annoying, but the latter infinitely more so.
― toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:50 (six years ago)
you either get no lettering or the typography on the vampire weekend record
― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:51 (six years ago)
Pang is as wonderful as I wanted the last Chairlift album to be.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:51 (six years ago)
i really liked the chorus of one of the Caroline Polachek songs ("Door") that placed high in the tracks poll. not so much into the rest of the album. it seems well crafted but i don't think i like pop
― But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:51 (six years ago)
The first song on Pang is very pretty
― totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:51 (six years ago)
surprised to see this so high also, I thought the consensus was the album was just OK
― bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:51 (six years ago)
the first few tracks and the singles are on pang are SO STRONG that i get seeing the trees for the forest
― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:52 (six years ago)
I quite like Hey Big Eyes, apart from the title, that is bad. Caroline Shut Up? That's a good title.
― nashwan, Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:53 (six years ago)
I liked the last Chairlift album quite a bit more than this. I don't really understand why it was so hated. I like her much better when she's being sassy and fun than when she is stuck in yelpy ballad mode.

moodles we are in a very lonely club of two
― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:54 (six years ago)
"The first song on Pang is very pretty"
yes. the synth chords are giving me deja vu of some 90s ambient track but can't think which one.oh no 2nd track started and I can't get with this style of singing either.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:54 (six years ago)
surprised too. Only "So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings" stuck with me (on tracks ballot)
― maffew12, Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:55 (six years ago)
xxp
Haha, an unexpected convergence!
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:55 (six years ago)
Being annoying as an aesthetic decision different to unintentional annoyingness. I appreciate how people wouldn’t be on board with the former, but still. Gecs rule. My #3

too low
― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:57 (six years ago)
Didn't like the album as much as the singles but cool.
― toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:57 (six years ago)
Thought this would be Top 5
― Jeff W, Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:57 (six years ago)
The Dawn Richard record really grew on me after a few listens, had it just outside the top 10 on my ballot.

if you told me in 1998 that auto tune would prevalent in music in 2020 I would 1st say that's kind of an odd thing to say out of the blue and then I'd say no way that'd be possible
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:01 (six years ago)
whoa thought this was a lock for top 5 maybe top 3

good album
― nxd, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:03 (six years ago)
my number 1, and that’s way too low (but please add the 50 points to its total score that longneck forgot to award it)
― breastcrawl, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:03 (six years ago)
xposts to a previous day: those that like the Barker album should also check out Topdown Dialectic, which should be on this list but won't be
― But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:03 (six years ago)
arghhhh i still need to listen tot he whole thing. everything i've heard off it is great though
― doorstep jetski (dog latin), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:03 (six years ago)
How dare you not include the AFRICAN GIANT in the top 10.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:04 (six years ago)
I don't often like how Polachek stretches her voice, but "Caroline Shut Up" is a jam
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:04 (six years ago)
Eh, when your annoyingness is built off of a foundation of smugfuckery that smacks of disdain for your source material, I'm not going to get on board unless I hate the source material.
― totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:04 (six years ago)
Also I didn't listen to the entire Polachek album but... she is a very conventional singer? I am not quite sure what people are reacting against other than "sounds like she studied voice at some point"?
― totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:05 (six years ago)

There's no odd timbre in her sound and she isn't doing anything particularly weird or unexpected with her voice that I've noticed

I've been waiting for years for Nigerian pop to get an international breakthrough, but when Burna Boy finally achieved it, I found the record... a bit boring... Very tasteful?
― Frederik B, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:07 (six years ago)
Burna Boy is good, not too far off my ballot
― TOO LOW, the Curator (imago), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:08 (six years ago)
sustained excellence can be boring, i guess
― ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:08 (six years ago)
the Polachek album is good, i never really got transported by Chairlift before but this one is enjoyable.
― omar little, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:10 (six years ago)
Also getting four number one votes and missing the top 10 is insane.
