When Danny Brown switches his voice, it's always a thrill, but I don't want him doing it for a whole album.

I love this record.

Are they huge in Canada?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 19:16 (six years ago)

They're on a couple big Chillout type playlists. I'm betting they get a lot of play in stores.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 19:22 (six years ago)

I live in Montreal and had never heard of them so I don't think so.

Tailwhip by Men I Trust is one of the best songs of the decade imho.

Love the sound of that - palm muted? - bass in their sound.

Not my thing, alas. I'll give it another shot some time.

Never really warmed to Russell's non-disco material, gimme Patrick Cowley over him any day.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 19:26 (six years ago)

I have never heard of this Arthur Russell album but I’ve liked almost everything I’ve heard from him.

It’s incredible how consistent and vast the quality of his posthumous work is.

do love that men i trust record

Pretty good day today overall.

I don't normally vote for archival releases but Iowa Dream shouldn't be overlooked.

not digging today as much as yesterday but hopefully we still have some more to come right?

This is otm. I can't think of another example of someone's posthumous work being this good.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 19:33 (six years ago)

planning on getting to 21 though it's gonna happen in fits and starts until 7 as i have meetings and am about to go for a jog.

First, though, I notice that genre list doesn't include any country...

I didn't spend enough time with this. I'll correct that presently.

Good album, no more, no less.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 19:49 (six years ago)

All four of them are vv different which was a concern that it might not work but all are so phenomenally good at their best and they brought it all together on this.

omar little, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 19:49 (six years ago)

Awesome! My #10. Brilliant, harrowing and varied record, and it absolutely flies by too. Simz is quite the forceful presence

TOO LOW, the Curator (imago), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 19:52 (six years ago)

One of my votes there (Little Simz) - my favourite rap record in quite a while

Jeff W, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 19:54 (six years ago)

I'm beginning to think the Frozen II soundtrack isn't gonna make it :(

dad genes (morrisp), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 19:58 (six years ago)

Listened to The Highwomen album a lot when it came out. Talented artists making good music, and I'm very glad they exist and are getting some well deserved attention, but as I've said elsewhere, it all feels so calculated and serious. The few places where they sneak in some levity ("My Name Can't Be Mama", "Don't Call Me") are among my favorites.

I discovered the Simz in early Jan. and it *just* missed my ballot. Reminded me a lot of Whack World.

listening to Danny Brown in the hope this is the album that clicks and... Nope I still don't get it. Always found his stuff quite flat and uninteresting. Is this really considered 'weird' for hip hop? IDGI

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 20:02 (six years ago)

The Danny Brown Voice™ is considered 'weird', don't know about the rest.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 20:03 (six years ago)

why did i just listen today the american football record? so beautiful.
really glad that the highwomen made the top.

Nourry, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 20:05 (six years ago)

xp just sounds a bit nasal.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 20:06 (six years ago)

Brandi Carlile's love song on this album one of the intensest I've heard in years.

Seems like 2019 was her year.

this is by far least weird album he's ever released

Produced the Tanya Tucker too.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 20:07 (six years ago)

does it need to be “weird”?

beard papa, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 20:08 (six years ago)

Smoke + Drink from a few albums back was a fun Danny Brown party anthem I'll give him that

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 20:08 (six years ago)

excited to see the placement of the danny brown-produced tanya tucker album, gotta be top 10 right?

na (NA), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 20:08 (six years ago)

xxxxp there's "levity" in a bunch of other Highwomen tracks - loose change, heaven is a honky tonk, redesigning women...

I'll concede that the opening track is a little "calculated and serious," in that it's a rewrite of a classic song. maybe also the closing number, wheels of laredo... which also appeared on the Tanya Tucker album, no?

dad genes (morrisp), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 20:09 (six years ago)

xp no but it needs to be interesting. someone up thread described it as 'weirdo hip hop' but it sounds pretty strait to me

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 20:09 (six years ago)

As Paul McCartney said, that would be something.
