Haven’t listened to whole thing yet. Really like Don’t Go Outside.

me too! it's like prog poppy, especially with the reprises. proggy

📹this is industrial
― glindr jackson (gyac), Saturday, 11 January 2020 16:40 (six years ago)
this album is fantastic, especially like the psych-pop fusion of "concrete" and "anything like me"'s industrial groove

love the depeche mode "grabbing hands grab all they can" reference on "bloodmoney"
― american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 13 January 2020 15:14 (six years ago)
in fact i think repurposing an oft-maligned depeche mode lyric kinda summarizes what this album is going for
― american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 13 January 2020 15:28 (six years ago)
Yesss I love Depeche Mode and that line is so great ❤️ anyone who hates on DM esp for Everything Counts is clearly a clown though

― american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 13 January 2020 18:13 (six years ago)
the ending of "concrete" kills me, when everything turns into this bright and beautiful ray of positivity while singing 'turn me into a street'
also the drums on "BLOODMONEY" sound a lot like "closer" to me
― gman59, Monday, 13 January 2020 19:00 (six years ago)
I didn’t get Closer, but I did get a bit of The Beautiful People from Anything Like Me?
― steer karma (gyac), Monday, 13 January 2020 19:16 (six years ago)
Actually think I’m a bit obsessed with Sit Stay - it’s the whole pre chorus/chorus plus,...that fucking outro is spectacular

― steer karma (gyac), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 14:44 (six years ago)
watched a couple of the videos and I don't hate it but so far I'm struggling to hear how it's much more than a basic version of Grimes.
― Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 15:59 (six years ago)
my initial instinct was that it reminds me of some of the stuff Ginger Wildheart has been doing, especially the Hey Hello album, but a full listen might scotch that

― american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 16:06 (six years ago)

You know, this kinda reminds me of Shiina Ringo to an extent.
the Shiina Ringo thread
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 16:32 (six years ago)
i enjoy a lot of this! "concrete" is friggin great.
i do feel like the juxtaposition of pop and heavier stuff works best when the heavy stuff is as well thought-out and complex as the poppy stuff -- like the power metal-type leads and straight industrial moments are a lot more interesting than like, chunky limp bizkit riffs.
love the "wouldn't it be nice" reference in concrete too

this is a good description of one of the videos I watched ("X") but idk it felt less like peanut butter and chocolate and more like peanut butter and mayo (ftr I like mayo).
― Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:08 (six years ago)
i have no beef with grimes but she can't write 1 hook let alone 3 in one song
― idgaf (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:09 (six years ago)
i should say: i have no MUSICAL beef with grimes

this is probably entirely the wrong question to ask but to what extent was that sinclair character involved in this new album?
― opden gnash (imago), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:17 (six years ago)
she split from him (and made similar accusations against him)
― idgaf (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:18 (six years ago)
he has credits on the record but iirc his actual involvement in the songwriting is disputed
― american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:20 (six years ago)
didn't realize she just split from him in dec

not that it devalues the music or her art if he is heavily involved obv - just a bit unfortunate
― opden gnash (imago), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:22 (six years ago)
yeah he also directed several of the videos iirc
― american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:23 (six years ago)

the zombies have gone prog hardcore
― opden gnash (imago), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:41 (six years ago)
ok the rest of the album is imo good-to-very-good rather than great (and as i say, tt has already played me like three of its tracks!) but man Concrete
― opden gnash (imago), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:09 (six years ago)
the grimes comparison really only makes sense for "sit/stay", which belongs to the same sort of industrial pop territory as "kill v maim". though if grimes actually made the metal album she kept threatening to i'd imagine it'd probably sound fairly similar to this but probably not as good.
― ufo, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:15 (six years ago)

― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 16 January 2020 00:17 (six years ago)
I am not sure how much staying power this will have for me, but it is bringing the lols for me right now. Concrete and Sit/Stay are great. A lot of the twists and turns in other tracks are interesting. At the very least it will be a good gym album.
― An Oral History of Deez Nutz (PBKR), Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:06 (six years ago)

― ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:33 (six years ago)
I'm a fan. I am digging Poppy. not sure about her ballads but Concrete is a doozy. Turn me into a street indeed.
― kornrulez6969, Thursday, 16 January 2020 03:33 (six years ago)
This is ... something. Very 90's sounding somehow. 'Concrete' and 'Sit/Stay' the clear highlights. The jarring shifts between "songs within songs" are pretty crazy but kinda gimmicky and distract from some genuinely great musical sequences.
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 16 January 2020 10:42 (six years ago)
i def thought "this sounds like the late 90s" when i was listening to it
― idgaf (roxymuzak), Thursday, 16 January 2020 15:11 (six years ago)
The worst thing that could happen to her is turning into a real person, with real feelings.

i want to like this a little more than i do, this industrial sound is a good fit for her but the song's just missing something?
― ufo, Thursday, 20 July 2023 07:06 (two years ago)
curious what the album’s gonna be like (comes out in october)
― ivy (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 July 2023 13:40 (two years ago)
the press release made it sound like it'll generally be along the lines of this & "church outfit" but some of it will have guitars on top of the industrial beats too
― ufo, Thursday, 20 July 2023 13:41 (two years ago)
it also compares one track to 'mirwais-era madonna' which i have no idea how will fit with the rest of the stuff going on and cites burial, blawan, and a whole bunch of new wave as influences

― ufo, Friday, 10 November 2023 02:05 (two years ago)
weird album, it's pretty all over the place stylistically. some of it is great but a lot is just ok at best
highlights are "linger" (the burial impression here lol), "the attic" and "prove it"
― ufo, Friday, 10 November 2023 11:40 (two years ago)
I just made this my first Poppy album. I really don't like her voice tbh. Good musical ideas though - esp Church Outfit, Hard and Zig.
