Dark side is definitely better than wish you were here. I can't listen to Shine on you crazy diamond any more. Animals is great.

every person I've ever known who is huge Floyd fan is dismissive of Dark Side. every person I've ever know who isn't huge Floyd fan loves Dark Side, maybe likes a bit other Floyd stuff to lesser degree, and can't stand most of the rest.

That doesn't mean shit. Why should a fan know better about the best album than the others? Obviously fans tend to like the more far-out stuff just to differentiate themselves from the lot.

what do you mean by "doesn't mean shit"? I take it to mean something along the lines of what you said. Partly might be to "differentiate themselves", but I think some people just like 25 minute psych jams more than the like the tighter, more focused stuff on Dark Side.

They usually have no clue which is their best work. If you ask them usually it is their last album, obviously also for promo reasons.

Granny and Alex are both right. YES, serious Floydians are generally gonna prefer something more obscure. YES, casual listeners are generally going to embrace what is popular and familiar.

All of this is human and normal and good.

There's no conflict between these assertions, as far as I can see.

SYD RULES

I think we can all agree that they peaked with A Momentary Lapse of Reason.

I have an equal amount of love for The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Meddle, The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.

Not to pick on you, Alex, but I don’t think this is so much for promo reasons as — it’s the freshest thing they’ve worked on, and so they’re still excited about it? Musicians def. don’t think about their output the way fans do; they tend not to want to dwell on the past, etc.

PINK FLOYD RULES

I'm not a huge fan except for the Syd stuff, but Dark Side is totally enjoyable and I understand why it's loved. Especially if I forget that "Money" is on it.

Wish You Were Here and Animals seem duller to me, I don't know why.

Euler otm. And The Pink Floyd rules too.

Dark Side is a clear case of overexposure, like Beethoven's 9th. Both still r00L though.

"Money" is a good FM radio cut, and I guess it feels a little out of place on Dark Side, but I'm still down with the entire LP.

i think it sounds very different. it sounds polished to the point of being labored, like they were making a Big Statement and wanted it to be perfect. maybe it's not fair but i attribute a lot of the sound of it to alan parsons.

i appreciate the production now a lot more, esp because no one will ever make rock records that sound that good ever again

I mostly agree with this ranking, especially the top 3, except I like The Division Bell. Syd's corny

I was drunk last night and in a bomb-throwing mood for some reason, sorry. The Purple One and Major Tom are both dope AF

RE: Post-Waters Floyd, I saw parts of the video for "High Hopes" last week (in the context of a Beavis and Butthead episode, lol) and the inanely "trippy" visuals actually made me angry

There's good stuff from every era before Waters left

David Gilmour's songs on The Wall > "Echoes" > Dark Side Of The Moon with "Money" ignored > flashes of brilliance here and there from all eras >>> albums that are considered "classics" but are completely worthless if you pay attention to Roger Waters' peak-terrible lyrics (Wish You Were Here, Animals, all his parts on The Wall)

I really do think the more Gilmour-y Wall songs are this band's finest moments ("Comfortably Numb", "Hey You", "Run Like Hell", "Goodbye Blue Sky"; hard pass on that "I need a dirty woman" song though)

Since we're on FLOYD RULES... BUT... "Echoes" is a nice 3-4 minute psychedelic pop/rock song pointlessly and redundantly padded out to 20-odd minutes.

Actually controversial take: I find both Gilmour and Waters fairly unengaging as vocalists, to the point that I often struggle to identify which one of them is singing by ear, and prefer the vocalists from just about every other major prog band.
