His cover of You Gave Me A Mountain is some all-time peak 70’s elvis imo. It’s a crushingly beautiful song as it is from Marty Robbins, but Elvis takes it to the summit

This one from Vegas Jan 26 1972 is my fave (the whole show is great)

https://youtu.be/wp8bsrEbBJI🕸

This is beautiful. Will probably make my ballot.

When watching the recent Elvis doc, I was reminded of how powerful the octave change is in this song — his voice was never better than in the ‘70s, and he knew exactly how to exploit every nuance:

Never Been To Spain is so bomb.

His gospel music is my other new love as an adult. Mum used to clean the house to it when I was a kid & I thought it was so uncool but now it just sounds like true devotion to me.

All his gospel stuff is great but when he grew into his voice it was a whole new level

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 18 June 2018 02:21 (seven years ago)

I’ve never listened to any of Elvis’s gospel stuff. Maybe I shoul, but I’ll wait till after I’ve turned in my ballot.

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 18 June 2018 02:35 (seven years ago)

i recommend everyone give it a shot before voting in the poll

to me gospel is where he is at his most authentic, vocally

Step in these arms is my fav Elvis

do they still play "An American Trilogy" during the laser show at Stone Mountain? dang, that was a moment where I felt genuine "southern pride" despite being a carpetbagger & a latino who the yee-hawers would probably have loved to lynch. but Elvis bellows while Lee rides off at Appomattox and I'm in tears, yee-hawing too.

i went tonight and yes they played the song. it was so nice to hear Elvis singing out in a big open lawn like that. for visuals they had a civil war section with lots of empty landscapes & explosions and zero rebel flags. during the song's triumphant ending they used animation to have the laser confederate generals on the mountain come to life and then break their swords. it was very surreal.

before this they had a bunch of Georgia songs: "Georgia on My Mind" by Ray Charles, "I Feel Good" by James Brown, "Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard, etc. the displays included portraits of the artists so at some point there was a 50 foot laser Little Richard on the side of the mountain.

when they played "Great Balls of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis, they had fireballs cued up. "Devil Went Down to Georgia" was the highlight of the show & the one laser show/song combo you need to see. we left soon after (& before the ridiculously slow national anthem).

If I manage to put together what feels like a substantial ballot to me, “Burning Up” will definitely be on it. From my limited received knowledge about Elvis, I’ve always gotten the feeling that it was one of the songs that his more rockist fans loathed.

I keep coming back to this one, a nice rocking make-over of a Bob Wills tune.

I've got my ballot down to about 133 tracks now and it's surprising how many of them are songs associated with other artists.

Brad C., Monday, 18 June 2018 17:25 (seven years ago)

(xpost)

And by “Burning Up,” of course I mean “Burning Love”

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 18 June 2018 17:37 (seven years ago)

re "songs associated with other artists" I was trying to think of a covers side poll that would work here but while there are songs where Elvis' version is the "definitive" one (Viva Las Vegas, Burning Love, etc) there are plenty of others not so clearly "owned" (even An American Trilogy). so I scrapped the idea.

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 18 June 2018 17:41 (seven years ago)

As far as overlooked soundtrack tunes, I stan for “Ito Eats” from Blue Hawaii, in which Elvis closes the gap between rockabilly stutter and calypso syncopation:

Stranger In My Own Hometown, the legendary sweary one, but the youtube is full of gorgeous photos too. & once Elvis starts cussing then James Burton loosens up with very tasty licks

Never heard this before, still prefer the 'Elvis in Memphis' version but this is still smoking hot.

Tomorrow Is A Long Time belongs to Rod Stewart...Nope

Ha! I was trying to be polite by not commenting. Elvis has the definitive version and it's not close.

Anyway friends, please dig my favorite obscure soundtrack song, the glorious Change of Habit. Please add this to the spotify playlist.

It's one of the very last ones he did, with Mary Tyler Moore.

Here is another lock for my Top 5. This isn't obscure, but it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. It's absolutely perfect.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 21 June 2018 01:08 (seven years ago)

“Burning Love” is straight up bar rock. a Jerry Lee Lewis style rave up.

i love the apocalyptic lyrics.

It's coming closer
The flames are reaching my body
Please won't you help me
I feel like I'm slipping away
It's hard to breath
And my chest is a-heaving
Lord have mercy,
I'm burning a hole where I lay

its like a Cramps song

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 21 June 2018 16:14 (seven years ago)

OMG for the last 30 years I thought he was saying I'm burning the whole world away.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 21 June 2018 16:23 (seven years ago)

Burning Love is more like a Cars song than Cramps

cr.ht (crüt), Thursday, 21 June 2018 17:17 (seven years ago)

Too bad he never recorded Fire. Bruce wrote it for him, and it would be a perfect companion to Burning Love.

Euler do you have the results so I can help with the images? I’ll have several free hours tomorrow to help out. Will you do the rollout? If i’m doing it I’ll also need the results on Sunday so I can do both the images and the rollout simultaneously on Monday.

Thought about putting “One Night” but couldn’t quite get there.
Really my ballot is just a snapshot of how I felt that day, that hour, except for my Number One.

This is what I'm most looking forward to: seeing people's number ones.
