van morrison seems like a top bloke

brimstead, Thursday, 16 November 2017 02:12 (eight years ago)

I read that the Grateful Dead arranged for their roadies/crew members to be paid as much per show as the band members.

it is also my understanding that they offered health insurance to their roadies, which is so far beyond “good” i don’t even know what the word for it is.

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 16 November 2017 05:27 (eight years ago)

godz must be nice surely

clouds (peanutbuttereverysingleday), Thursday, 16 November 2017 08:14 (eight years ago)

van morrison seems like a top bloke

Such a sunny happy-go-lucky fellow.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 09:05 (eight years ago)

yeah lol, on a list of assholes, Van Morrison would be the first to come to my mind to add.

Ludo, Thursday, 16 November 2017 11:58 (eight years ago)

Fairly low-level everyday none of the wider public's business assholism tho, or the other kind?

fake pato is kind of racist, dude (darraghmac), Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:10 (eight years ago)

The former.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:36 (eight years ago)

I don't even know if he's an asshole so much as a stereotypical red-faced red-haired did-you-spill-my-pint Ulsterman.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:40 (eight years ago)

whatever happened with bunita marcus? that's the first I saw of that; there seems to be little follow up on her mental state, etc after what sounds like a fairly public, sinead o'connor-esque meltdown.

akm, Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:49 (eight years ago)

Van is ridiculously unpleasant by all accounts. nothing major I guess but a weird inclusion

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:00 (eight years ago)

I want to believe that Brian Wilson is a good nom for this thread. I'm reading his memoir, I am Brian Wilson (with Ben Greenman), and he comes off as such a tender soul. I do know that he had some aggressive acting-out issues (supposedly he greeted Elvis Presley with a flurry of karate chops), but to me they seem less the mark of an a-hole than of a man unable to regulate the rage left in him by his abusive father. I realize these aren't mutually exclusive characteristics, but in him I definitely sense it to be a case of the latter.

never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous), Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:01 (eight years ago)

Shirley Collins is definitely a good person.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:19 (eight years ago)

anyone mentioning Ariel Pink should probably check the Ariel Pink thread :/

frogbs, Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:23 (eight years ago)

wonder what weyes blood sees in him. guess they're two california weirdos with an interest in retromodern folk, just that one's one of the great artists of our day and the other is a kind of creepy nutcase idk

imago, Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:26 (eight years ago)

I'm pretty convinced Hamilton Leithauser is a Very Nice Person.

Josh (phantompenguin), Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:42 (eight years ago)

Lol I was kidding re: Van Morrison

brimstead, Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:42 (eight years ago)

Kirk from Metallica seems like a good guy. Barney from Napalm Death seems like a nice dude, considering.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 16 November 2017 16:32 (eight years ago)

as far as loveable old dudes in rock go, van morrison is right up there with ginger baker

plp will eat itself (NickB), Thursday, 16 November 2017 16:37 (eight years ago)

Van's not violent as far as I'm aware.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 16:42 (eight years ago)

yeah i've not really heard much about Van being violent/racist/homophobe/women hating etc.... just being a majorly grumpy fuck in a neil young fashion.
but someone please feel free to enlighten/sadden me?

jamiesummerz, Thursday, 16 November 2017 17:03 (eight years ago)

Less Neil Young, more this...

Lars Ulrich from Metallica and Phil Anselmo from Pantera.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 16 November 2017 17:21 (eight years ago)

Wait, wrong thread.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 16 November 2017 17:21 (eight years ago)

lol I'd forgotten about the time when Harry Enfield was actually funny.

i've read all the trashiest BBs biographies and offhand i can't really remember anything that cast brian in a bad light. carl seemed like a nice guy too.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:18 (eight years ago)

Lars Ulrich from Metallica and Phil Anselmo from Pantera.

marcos, Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:31 (eight years ago)

that's so fucking unfair to Lars to compare him with that fucking white nationalist junkie

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:36 (eight years ago)

Brian Wilson used to sneak in the blonde in his coke shack behind Marilyn's back and then wrote The Night Is So Young about her!

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:39 (eight years ago)

not to mention perving on Marilyn's sister

Οὖτις, Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:41 (eight years ago)

I mean, he does seem like a genuinely nice (if mentally unbalanced) guy but his sexual escapades in the 70s weren't exactly pretty

Οὖτις, Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:41 (eight years ago)

xxxpost:

Yeah, Anselmo is a legit fucking cunt.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:43 (eight years ago)

Vashti Bunyan surely

Week of Wonders (Ross), Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:54 (eight years ago)

Yeah if anyone comes up contrary evidence I'm deleting myself.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:17 (eight years ago)

I love her music but not some of her freak-folk US acolytes from the 00's, but she seems so sound.

calzino, Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:26 (eight years ago)

Paparazzi attack incidents aside (and tbh I feel paparazzi deserve being mistreated half of the time) I feel like Bjork is very sweet. She’s also bonkers so it can go both ways.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:55 (eight years ago)

Has Kurt Cobain been mentioned? From what I’ve read he was a stellar dude.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 16 November 2017 22:03 (eight years ago)

surely giving us Courtney Love's career is some kind of crime

Οὖτις, Thursday, 16 November 2017 22:05 (eight years ago)

Grunge inherited a lot of cock rock imbeciles and Kurt was never happy about it. There’s also anecdotes like this:

https://dangerousminds.net/comments/watch_nirvana_sabotage_buenos_aires_stadium_show

Makes it look like he was a class act.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 16 November 2017 22:09 (eight years ago)

Björk I totally believe. Cobain is another story all-together iirc.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 November 2017 22:10 (eight years ago)

AURORA seems like a kind soul (though her fans are a little over-the-top with their praise. I'm pretty sure she isn't an angel or an astral being or "too pure for this world")

jesus and figs and science and the foo fighters (unregistered), Thursday, 16 November 2017 22:12 (eight years ago)

Cannot believe nobody has mentioned Gaz Coombes

Top, top bloke by all accounts

stuck on the darraghmac (qiqing), Thursday, 16 November 2017 22:13 (eight years ago)

I'd do anything for Coombes, but I won't do that.

calzino, Thursday, 16 November 2017 22:19 (eight years ago)

is Devendra as much of a sleaze as I suspect he is?
his background as a pick-up artist doesn't really count in his favor, but Joanna Newsom seems to be cool with him so idk

jesus and figs and science and the foo fighters (unregistered), Thursday, 16 November 2017 22:30 (eight years ago)

From personal experience:

* Justin Broadrick of Godflesh
* Alex Paterson of The Orb
* Walter Becker
