Animal Collective - Two Corvettes
Yeh, so I'm a big fan but I've found a lot of stuff impenetrable. I was lying awake stoned in bed listening to Campfire Songs and this is the one that clicked. Reading the lyric sheet along with the song really helps here. It's like a time-stretched Beach Boys surf-and-car song with a really sad ending and it's achingly beautiful.

Quickspace - A Rose
I'm on a real hippy-dippy folk tip this summer, and a few ILMers are soon to receive a compilation along these lines. This is a standout on "The Death Of Quickspace" album

The Parsley Sound - Twilight Mushrooms
They used to be called Slum and this song was originally released as a 7" on Warp many moons ago. It's made a slightly lengthier reappearance, this time under a new name on the Parsley Sound's new eponymous album. The whole record is incredible, but something about this song stands out and sounds even fresher in the noughties. Yes, it's lo-fi, but it's also beautiful and hazy - like MBV using toy instruments. My favourite bits about it is when the singer and backing singer seem to go completely out of tune with each other, only to turn it around with some beautiful harmonics later on in the song.

I 'm not at home so I can't think of any more songs - sorry my mind's gone blank.

Laraaji ? anything off of Day Of Radiance
If you going to cheat, cheat right away right? Unheard by me until a couple of months ago this record is Ambient (3) and hence the concept of song and track is pretty loose. Phasing (insert metallic, acoustic stringed instrument here) and tiny hints of Eno intervention maybe. Cool and luscious.

Camayenne Sofa - Andree
Discovered on Mudd Up!, this track is lovely;a bubbling and joyous plucking at the heart and head

Pet Shop Boys - Being Boring (any version, but usually the Album version)
Perennial favourite round my way, never loses it?s ability to churn and maudlin-ise, even five years after the nineteen
nineties

Moses I - Invaders
Paranoid soul wailing on the Scallawah rhythm, languorous, doleful and fatalistic with a hint of geopolitcal comment; everybody hates a tourist especially one who?s trying to control the Rasta mans brain

Arto Mwambé and The Barons Of Burma ? Cryptonite
Grinding squall house with kitchen sink percussion chunks and burbling bass grind. Features a recipe for beef stew on the inner label.

Dinosaur ? Kiss Me Again
Would that I was hip enough to know this record before Ok . MORE Arthur Russell (But This Is Great); an absolutely sublime piece of Disco stomp glory.

RDB ? Yaari
Sickening rave bass stabs ? pounding dhol racket ? number one for the last six months in a better world than this one..

Pet Shop Boys ? Where the streets have no name (I can?t take my eyes off uou) (extended mix)
Perennial favourite round my way, better-than-bootleg-before-the-fact never loses the ability to invoke jumping glee and bubble gum hearts aflutter.

A. R. Kane - Down
Sixteen year old make out squall I can?t get enough of.

Vashti Bunyan ? I?d Like To Walk Around In Your Mind Sometime
Autumn and VB revival/resurgence immanent, some yoke-able sweetness to hum ?n mumble on the way to work.

Sly & The Family Stone ? Remember Who You Are
Purchased Back On The Right Track for £4 (after being convinced by the guy behind the counter), that I didn?t know how good this record was before yesterday is proof that I know nothing.

LRJP! (LRJP!), Sunday, 4 September 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)
