"The Him"!!

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 June 2013 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

"The Him" is the most underrated song in the New Order catalog by miles

also I said upthread that no one else was going to agree with my #1, lol

I posted a link to my Spotify playlist on Facebook and the only reaction I've gotten so far is "NO BIZARRE LOVE TRIANGLE????"

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Monday, 3 June 2013 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

BLT's there, no? Maybe I chose a source that's not licensed in all territories.

I would have guessed there was more love out there for "The Him". Certainly my favourite Movement track behind "Dreams Never End". (Which I thought was obvious top 10 material, for that matter, so I'm quite clueless.) More colour and movement than other still-sounds-like-Joy-Division dirges like, say, "In a Lonely Place".

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 3 June 2013 23:08 (thirteen years ago)

Talking about my ballot, not the countdown.

My cassette of PCL was a weird one! Black plastic with white print... I think it had Spanish legal on it.

2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 4 June 2013 16:35 (thirteen years ago)

Listened to Republic on my ride into work today. I think a lot of the lyrics to World were taken directly from meetings about the demise of Factory.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

Looking at this record label makes me imagine what Technique would be like in Spanish...

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 4 June 2013 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

Socio Culpable is a great title.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

That's what I thought! Could easily be a New Order song title in its own right, that! :D

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 4 June 2013 17:21 (thirteen years ago)

lol "dando vueltas"

@Bee OK: Are there any songs from 1981-1993 that didn't get a vote?

i'm pretty sure, will go down and post findings.

at last!

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 June 2013 13:19 (thirteen years ago)

Indeed! And thanks again for reading over the draft there.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 June 2013 13:21 (thirteen years ago)

I know I talk PC&L down in comparison to Movement, Technique and the 00s albums, but it really is a great album.

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Thursday, 6 June 2013 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

For me it's just so blisteringly self-evident that PCL is their magnum opus. And I'll always love 'Your Silent Face' above all. The first minute or so of that track is sublimity itself to me.

This was a great poll thread. I wasn't in the right frame of mind to make a ballot when it was voting time but I had a heavy deadline last weekend and spent all weekend listening to NO thanks to this thread. (The Recycle blog versions, naturally-- damn they sound so much better than the officials).

Used the Spotify thread to hear the 00s stuff I've never heard before. Not feeling it so far. There's no fatness to the sound and Barney's voice sounds anonymous. Will try harder.

2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

If there's no fatness to the sound, you might want to double-check your speakers/headphone because you are likely missing the sub bass on the dancier songs. (Also I think Barney sounds "in tune" rather than "anonymous" but YMMV)

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:20 (thirteen years ago)

Full disclosure, his sound on 'Waiting For the Siren's Call' reminded me of the kid from Owl City and I freaked our and bolted

2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

our = out

2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

Had a lot of fun listening to the Spotify playlist yesterday. Great choices except my TOO LOW goes to Subculture. I would have thrown Waiting for the Sirens' Call a bone as well.

skip, Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:36 (thirteen years ago)

I'm listening to Brotherhood at the moment and can't help cracking into a smile at the way Bernard sings the word "key" on 'Weirdo'... also, I'm sure that this is the album that Bernard does the most Michael Jackson-style "whooping" on... it's a real whoopfest.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 6 June 2013 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

kiiiiey

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 June 2013 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

fantastic review Ned, thanks for sharing.

Bee OK, Saturday, 20 July 2013 02:32 (twelve years ago)

what happened there? anyways yeah that song is good. now listening to "California Grass."

Bee OK, Saturday, 20 July 2013 02:36 (twelve years ago)

that song is good too, will have to listen to this album. i burnt out of New Order with this poll but was really in the mood to hear them tonight when i got home from work.

Bee OK, Saturday, 20 July 2013 02:40 (twelve years ago)

so tonight i have listened to some New Order and have been looking over the list. number 51 was "Turn the Heater On" actually, embarrassingly, hearing this for the first time.

Bee OK, Saturday, 20 July 2013 04:46 (twelve years ago)

52 was "Senses" and this video is kind of blowing my mind right now:

Bee OK, Saturday, 20 July 2013 04:51 (twelve years ago)

just saw them play live and it was so fantastic! they played 7 of my top 10 poll tracks.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Saturday, 20 July 2013 04:59 (twelve years ago)

that is amazing.

Bee OK, Saturday, 20 July 2013 05:05 (twelve years ago)

i would have been happy with just three.

Bee OK, Saturday, 20 July 2013 05:08 (twelve years ago)

five joy division songs too, which apparently is pretty standard these days... I avoided looking at their recent setlists in order to enjoy the surprise. nothing from technique! and it wasn't in my top ten, but I was pleased they decided to play "world (the price of love)" and "here to stay." go see them if you get the chance! we danced from start to finish, so fun.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Saturday, 20 July 2013 06:22 (twelve years ago)

Ugh! Was given a ticket to the Austin show tonight and couldn't make it. Sadness.....

*tera, Saturday, 20 July 2013 06:25 (twelve years ago)

fu both, I am one city away rn and would have gone just for HG

eau de feet (sic), Saturday, 20 July 2013 06:28 (twelve years ago)

That's the 2nd great ILM poll I've read this week.

I don't get the appeal of wanting to hear BLT in a "real" acoustic version.
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn)

Not even the aging Bernard's own acoustic rendition?

Campari G&T, Saturday, 20 July 2013 23:19 (twelve years ago)

I just listened to lonesome tonight for the first time. it was awesome.
― anonanon, Friday, 31 May 2013 20:11 (1 month ago)

It is indeed, and yet I've always wished it were more like the London Polytechnic bootleg recording from 1985. By this I don't mean the official release should have Bernard's reference to the fact of ot being a benefit concert for the striking miners: "if you don't all move back a bit, next week we'll be doing a suffocation benefit", or to his spontaneously changing the lyrics: "When you reached out in your sleep; And you knew I wasn't there" to "When you reached out in your sleep; And felt my big fat
cock"

No, the reason this could & should have been so much greater, and fully deserving of A-side status, comes toward the exhilarating pure beauty of the extended coda (beginning at 3mins:28secs); a perfect blend of syths and guitars, that overwhelms with delight, and worthy of being placed, for this glorious culmination alone, the same exalted company as Some Distant Memory, or Every Little Counts.

Campari G&T, Sunday, 21 July 2013 00:48 (twelve years ago)

While perusing this endlessly fascinating poll again, I am in despair that I did not download the beautiful Recycle Project while I had the chance. It is nowhere to be found on the internet.

A bee in her hair. (Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt), Sunday, 21 July 2013 01:47 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, they had to sack it for very obvious reasons..

Mark G, Sunday, 21 July 2013 10:42 (twelve years ago)

two months pass...

for reference as i had a hard time finding this thread: Oh, you've got green eyes Oh, you've got blue eyes Oh, you've got Poll eyes: NEW ORDER Artist poll #37 (voting ends May 26 Midnight Pacific)
