One of ILM's most loved bands.

I'm asking for your Top 40 New Order songs.

Ballot part one (mandatory): Your Top 40 New Order tracks. Usual scoring method (1:50, 2:46, 3:43, 4:40…) will be applied. Please order your list with your #1 at the top and your #40 at the bottom. No need to number them but remember one on top. You can vote for less songs if you would like with your number one still getting the 50 points.

Ballot part two (optional): Your Top New Order albums. If you only want to list the first five then that is fine or you can list all nine of them.

Ballot part three (optional): Your Top 5 New Order videos.

Send ballots to neworderpoll AT gmail dot com. please include your ILM user name.

Deadline for voting will be May 26, 2013 Pacific Time.

i'm thinking that i should have made this a Top 30. first artist poll i'm running but not going to change it now.

Bee OK, Friday, 17 May 2013 02:10 (ten years ago) link

i hope 10 days is not too long, it seems about normal?

Bee OK, Friday, 17 May 2013 02:35 (ten years ago) link

it's good. it will take a while to figure out exactly how i want to rank 40 songs, which is a lot.

Treeship, Friday, 17 May 2013 02:36 (ten years ago) link

Looking forward to this one. Probably my favourite and most listened to band ever. 40 songs shouldn't be a problem at all, think the videos might be the hardest part of this poll.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 17 May 2013 02:40 (ten years ago) link

i have been listening to a lot of New Order lately for my ballot. one song i had forgotten about is "Sunrise" so much power.

The album tracks from this periods are terrific. Love the growly bass-y ones on the first side of Brotherhood ("Broken Promise," "Weirdo").

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 17 May 2013 21:23 (ten years ago) link

haha I was originally thinking "40? good god that's a lot" but it seems I won't have to resort to voting for "World In Motion" after all

AMERICA IS ABOUT RESSLING (DJP), Friday, 17 May 2013 21:37 (ten years ago) link

also want to make me semi-regular plea to ppl to reconsider/relisten to the later albums because they are actually really, really good; I sort of feel like New Order as a band didn't really know what to do with an album until Technique, with Movement being something of a fluke occurrence

AMERICA IS ABOUT RESSLING (DJP), Friday, 17 May 2013 21:40 (ten years ago) link

That kind of writes off PCL, which I still think is their best, DJP

Dr X O'Skeleton, Friday, 17 May 2013 22:17 (ten years ago) link

i still don't like the ranking. why are we all forced to rank the tracks? i'd prefer to name 40 tracks in alphabetic order with each track getting the same number of points.

Ballot sent.

Quickly found I couldn't stretch my ballot to 40 tracks, and very proudly didn't vote for anything past Republic.

haven't decided yet, we can talk about it for a day or so and then make it official. i was leaning towards counting it as one song but then breaking it down in the post as to what mix was actually voted on.

Bee OK, Saturday, 18 May 2013 00:14 (ten years ago) link

right, and i guess dub edits will be counted w/ the proper single

乒乓, Saturday, 18 May 2013 00:17 (ten years ago) link

I have to confess that I like tons of New Order songs -- maybe enough to fill out a 40-song ballot -- but most of them I can't tell by name. I have to hear them and say, "Oh right, that one."

Deep cut/b-side reminder time.

Exhibit A: the sublime "Lonesome Tonight" - the last 2.5 minutes or so are so perfect...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYrmcZWsBy4

Exhibit B: the nifty "Cries & Whispers" is this track...NOT "Mesh!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NZfjbht79M

Exhibit C:

The Peel Session version of "5-8-6" blows away the LP version...

(That whole session is totally awesome, of course - Turn The Heater On, Too Late, We All Stand.)

― Bee OK, Friday, May 17, 2013 8:09 PM (Yesterday)

In the polls I've run, I've accepted ballots from people who want to just split the points evenly among all the tracks they vote for. It's no biggie, but I've never listed it as an option because it's not what I/we are generally going for.

I like the option of doing fourty — it won't be very hard for me to fill out that list.

And yes, 'Dream Attack' will be rather high on my ballot.

Austin, Sunday, 19 May 2013 14:55 (ten years ago) link

Revisiting New Order, I'm always struck by how much of a guitar (and bass) band they were. I think of them as part of the whole synth-linndrum wave, and they were, but that was just part of the picture.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 19 May 2013 16:20 (ten years ago) link

i think 3 out of my top 5 new order songs are guitar songs

乒乓, Sunday, 19 May 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

How will different versions of the same song be counted?

Temptation '82 vs. '87, 7-inch vs. 12-inch, etc.

Millsner, Sunday, 19 May 2013 17:13 (ten years ago) link

I do think this is one of the most extraordinary pieces of music ever made. The bass sequencer always put me in mind of the musical spaceship at the end of Close Encounters; the melody is beautiful, insistent and mysterious; and then Martin Hannett added what sounds like a swarm of cyber insects descending at the close.

Just working on my list. I made a playlist of my favourite songs, got it down to 45 songs now. I really don't want to leave any of these songs out.

Everyone Everywhere will be on my list. Actually surprised how many songs I love that came after Technique. On my playlist I have thirteen songs from the last three albums.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 20 May 2013 02:02 (ten years ago) link

I still haven't voted. My ballot looks like a 15 year old made it. I might leave it that way.

As I've been thinking abt NO it strikes me how arbitrary my line is for lyrics that are too trite/corny/bad. Love Less is ok/Every Little Counts is not ok.

Bee OK, Monday, 27 May 2013 01:04 (ten years ago) link

Yeah!! Ballot sent!! I just couldn't rank the 40 songs. Dreams Never End is my #1 followed by 1963 and Dream Attack. After that it would have taken me forever to rank the rest. Could I put Leave Me Alone before Sunrise? Where's Weirdo place? Temptation vs Touched by the Hand of God? Sleeper track is Mr. Disco. Hope it places high!! Most New Order video by long shot - Round and Round.

i am digging that album. just listening to it on spotify. there is nothing brilliant like eg bizarre love triangle of course but even the leftovers of their last album are pretty solid and mostly quite lovely. are they ever going to reform? hooky doing joy division and early new order albums live is really sad, recycling and reviving the past, what a waste of time.
