Speaking of New Order, please fire when ready, BeeOK.

What makes a man start threads? (WilliamC), Thursday, 16 May 2013 12:57 (thirteen years ago)

Kinda like the idea of having just one poll rolling out at once.

scintilla (seandalai), Thursday, 16 May 2013 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

Though I do think an extended nomination/discussion period would be good for disco, maybe for the labels too.

scintilla (seandalai), Thursday, 16 May 2013 13:47 (thirteen years ago)

So, that's decided then?

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 16 May 2013 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

I...guess?

BTW, I didn't mean that New Order, Jay-Z and Motown should all three run at once.

What makes a man start threads? (WilliamC), Thursday, 16 May 2013 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

since we're sounding off, this focus group of one is cool with having genre polls run on a parallel track. They take longer and run differently and don't take away from the excitement of the artist polls imo.

inste grammophon (rogermexico.), Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

Ditto.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

Thirded.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

just an FYI: when the Jay-Z poll comes up in a few weeks, I'm going to attempt to run a reboot of the Neptunes poll in parallel with it -- just seems to make sense, since a lot of the same people will vote in both, and I can piggyback the drive to get people to re-send their Neptunes ballots (if they already sent them to the original poll runner) to me while they're doing their Jay ballots, and have one voting period for both (obviously there'll be two separate results threads, but i'll try not to keep it moving in a timely fashion).

yeeznuts (some dude), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 05:38 (thirteen years ago)

er scratch the "not" at the end there haha

yeeznuts (some dude), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 05:38 (thirteen years ago)

I was thinking of bringing forward The Doors poll in tribute to Ray, if it can be fitted around the others. I assume New Order results are next week, and Motown voting opens next week too - I'm guessing Motown needs a couple of weeks' voting, which leaves a gap for The Doors e.g. if I open voting this weekend and countdown next weekend.

Any reason why that's not a good idea?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 12:54 (thirteen years ago)

It worked for the Beasties last year.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

I would be into a Doors poll

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

I've emailed Bee OK; if he/she's cool with it, I'll flashpoll The Doors and countdown Sunday or Monday. We all already know all these songs anyway.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

she's talking about pr0n, no?

Euler, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

eek

Euler, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

lol

Doors poll good idea

my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

hmm I wonder if my high school walkman is still operational.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

I like the flashpoll idea because otherwise there'd be pressure to go on a Doors binge, & that would be immoral

Euler, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I don't wanna end up bearded in a bathtub

my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:15 (thirteen years ago)

side poll idea: best use of a Doors song in a movie or tv show

my vote: that episode of The Wonder Years when they play "Riders on the Storm"

Euler, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

Homer singing "The End"

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

"The End" in some war movie.

clemenza, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:35 (thirteen years ago)

Missed opportunity: "L'America" in Zabriskie Point.

Sheela-Tubb-Mann, You Real Know-It-All (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

Also on The Simpsons tip: Krusty singing "Break On Through" in a '70s clip.

yes, go ahead and do the Doors. sent an email.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:39 (thirteen years ago)

Was thinking the same thing this morning--just a list of Motown records (or a link to one) seems enough. Unlink a genre poll, there's not really a grey area: either a song was on Motown (or a subsidiary) or it wasn't.

― clemenza, Tuesday, May 14, 2013 7:16 PM (1 week ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

This will be a serious grey area for Stax though - lots of stuff recorded in their studio and using their musicians and producers but released on other labels, etc.

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

Oh man, I didn't even think about that aspect of the Stax poll. NIGHTMARES!

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

Eh...can you give me some pointers on this? I know about Stax sublabels but I don't think that's not what you're talking about.

sword of (seandalai), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

Stax and Volt, yes. But also a bunch of Atlantic Records soul albums are basically just Stax albums in different wrapping. And I don't even know how many other artists came through the studios to record scattered singles and whatnot. Might be better just to limit it to things with a proper Stax or Volt insignia on them, and Atlantic releases that are certifiably Stax?

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

yes, wasn't referring to subsidiary labels like Volt (which obv count as Stax) but rather, say, Wilson Pickett records released on Atlantic, even though they were recorded at Stax using the MGs house band, and written by Steve Cropper too

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

co-written, that should be

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

If something was on Atlantic only and not just distributed by them, I'd be inclined to exclude. I'm open to persuasion though.

sword of (seandalai), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

That doesn't seem like a grey area to me, Lee; whether or not Stax musicians were used, or wherever it was recorded, if the record wasn't on Stax or a label owned/controlled/distributed/whatever by Stax, it's something else and wouldn't qualify.

clemenza, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 21:24 (thirteen years ago)

Big Star in Stax poll--y/n?

Sheela-Tubb-Mann, You Real Know-It-All (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 21:42 (thirteen years ago)

Hmm...not sure. Going by a quick Google, Ardent was not a subsidiary of Stax, Stax just handled distribution for them. Depends on where we want to set the boundaries,

sword of (seandalai), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

I thought Stax had bought a share of Ardent Records as well, though can't find any detailed history of the label online. Recently listened to the Thank You Friends comp of Stax-era Ardent recordings, was disappointed at how thin it was other than the Big Star-related tracks (which make up over one-third of the set).

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 22:43 (thirteen years ago)

Q: Is the reissue of any Ardent product possible, say through the sales of tapes to other companies, or through another agreement on your part?

FRY: Under the terms of the distribution agreement with Stax, they own the masters. Any masters that were actually delivered to them and deemed satisfactory for release and put out became property of Stax. There is at present a great deal of litigation going on to determine who is going to wind up owning that property. No one right now is in a position to say that they have a clear title. There are a number of creditors who claim security agreements and so forth. That is going to have to be decided in the courts. When someone establishes clear title, they would be in a position to sell the tapes or license somebody to manufacture and release product. If there was a demand. We’ve had some inquiries from England which we have not been able to handle because of the legal situation.

sword of (seandalai), Thursday, 23 May 2013 00:52 (thirteen years ago)

I had an idea today that was either brilliant or really stupid -- y'all be the judge. Each December when we start the EOY hiatus, we do a radio-button poll of the artist polls still to come -- "which one are you most looking forward to?" Winner gets to jump to the head of the line in February.

WilliamC, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

you need to poll that possibility

Euler, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

in that case I'll start my campaign for the CCR poll with this:

Creedence Clearwater Revival vs the Grateful Dead vs the Band

ḉrut (crüt), Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

I kinda like that idea actually! Lets us keep the organized, take-your-turn system of the polls while introducing a little big of unpredictability so it doesn't just feel like waiting out an endless countdown.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

That's what I was thinking! And doing it just once a year wouldn't be too disruptive, and doing it during the hiatus would give the poll-runner time to prepare.

WilliamC, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

during Carnival, the artist being polled should run a poll of ILX posters. we can kickstart the funds for this.

Euler, Thursday, 23 May 2013 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

I think a Thelonious Monk albums + tracks poll would be a winner, just trying to plant seeds.

tbh, they have more albums than I'd realized (http://www.discogs.com/artist/Sightings), but that's going to be the most niche poll attempted yet.
