i think the portishead album is a really impressive piece of work but i never got as into it as i expected ... i admire it from afar rather than loving it, so i didn't vote for it.
otm. (in some ways i think the gang gang dance album does for me what portishead does for other people. even though they're obv. very different.)

I would be really, really, really fucking happy if GGD went top five.
― ilxor, Saturday, 14 February 2009 17:23 (seventeen years ago)
The Gang Gang Dance album is good enough an album but no way should it be a top 10 record. Obviously it is going to be though on ILM. Good chance it will still be better than most in the top 20 mind you.

i was surprised at how much i liked saint dymphna, given that i'd thought other stuff of theirs was just sort of interesting. i really like the ebbs and flows of the album, and it has all this stuff in it -- bits and pieces of sound and rhythm that still surprise me. and i like how it acknowledges a lot of different forms (rock, grime, dubstep, trance, whatever) but doesn't feel bound or defined by them.
plus they were the best live act i saw last year. really good.
― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 14 February 2009 18:12 (seventeen years ago)
(and like i said, i love the drumming. nice to hear a band really thinking about and expanding the possibilities of rhythm in song structures.)

I was supposed to be at a GGD show in Brussels now, but it (and the rest of the tour) has been cancelled after the storage room containing their equipment burned down yesterday in Holland.

Oh shit, poor GGD! Was due to see them later this month, everyone's pretty hyped for this tour too.
― Frank Sumatra (NickB), Saturday, 14 February 2009 18:28 (seventeen years ago)
this happens a lot w/kanye! though not with 'robocop' for me, that shit sucks. i mean seriously, ROBOCOP? how the hell did that simile make it past the editing process? and the "spoilt little LA girl" chant is definitely the nadir of something or other
yeah i agree that basically the whole song is super retarded and clumsy, but idunno for me the 'spoiled little LA girl' part really redeems it for me! it's a fantastic hook/bridge imo
also i like 'see you in my nightmares' a lot, may as well admit that in the middle of this long-ass paragraph where no one will see
not anymore :-p

I agree with kev3in k that the "spoiled little LA girl" part of Robocop redeems the song. I think it's one of the standout moments on the entire album. It's cynical, but melodically it's one of the few sweet moments on an otherwise very depressing record. I love the glockenspiels on that song, too.

THELEX:
...though not with 'robocop' for me, that shit sucks. i mean seriously, ROBOCOP? how the hell did that simile make it past the editing process? and the "spoilt little LA girl" chant is definitely the nadir of something or other ... i get that i'm not supposed to sympathise w/kanye, that the bitterness is part and parcel of his whole experience, and i'm down with that on most of the songs, but the problem with the 'robocop' lyric isn't so much that dude is being a dick as dude is being retarded and using 12-year-old schoolboy similes.
OTMOTMOTM. although i've gotten over my "that's misogyinst!" knee-jerk reaction to kanye's persona(s) on 808s, "robocop" is still a borderline dealbreaker. not necessarily for the attitude, mostly just cuz the central "joke" is so retarded. that people were like, "come on, it's funny!" in defense just boggles. plus, yeah: the "spoiled little LA girl" chant. yikes. the fact that it IS so catchy & celebratory only makes it worse. were it just another throwaway moment, it wouldn't bug me half so much

― Jewish Lager (k3vin k.), Saturday, 14 February 2009 22:28 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, the "spoiled little LA girl" part is the only bit I like aside from the cartoon factory noises. The fact that it's such a direct personal attack when most of Kanye's sniping has been pretty oblique up to that point (either more serious gripes that could be about anybody ("don't say you will unless you will", "why are you so paranoid?") or goofy ad homs ("how could you be so Dr. Evil?", "you movin' like a Robocop"), such a specific, targeted attack on her is like "WHOA, where did THAT come from?"
― The Reverend, Saturday, 14 February 2009 22:45 (seventeen years ago)
Kinda surprised Grace Jones isn't gonna chart now I think of it.
Hurricane was my number vote, but I guess there just wasn't enough buzz around it, despite Bimble's and mine best efforts. I'm glad to see "Williams' Blood" made it in the singles poll, though it was a bit sad that more than half of the votes were given to that Airplane remix. It's not a bad remix at all, but the original tune is one of the most fabulously melodramatic tunes I've heard in ages, and the remix takes a lot of the drama away and leaves the song kinda flat.
― Tuomas, Saturday, 14 February 2009 23:37 (seventeen years ago)
the Grace Jones song I heard from the singles poll sounds like....... Seal
― turnover-friendly doubledribble (The Reverend), Saturday, 14 February 2009 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

― Tuomas, Saturday, 14 February 2009 23:55 (seventeen years ago)
(Neither sounds like Seal, I think.)
LOL is there seriously a metal band called 5ive???
― unaustralian (jabba hands), Sunday, 15 February 2009 01:33 (seventeen years ago)
Rather unfortunate name choice... Though maybe they existed before the boyband 5ive?
― Tuomas, Sunday, 15 February 2009 01:50 (seventeen years ago)
I thought there was a lot more buzz on that album than just Tuomas and Bimble. I also think that this is the only Aeroplane remix I would not listen to over the original, and I'm including God only Knows in that.
Also, listening to the recession, and re: Kanye in Put On, the end of that song really promises another verse and chorus right? or is it just me, it fades out during what could be a really great bridge. I'd love another two minutes so that Kanye had a whole half of the track.
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 15 February 2009 02:22 (seventeen years ago)
Uh, there already is a great bridge.

Whew: caught up with this at last. Fuck me, that was ... intense.
Thoughts, a propos of nothing much:
It's (M83) so eighties I can see why Grimly likes it so much. Not for me though
I'm really not such a fan of this album, though. I mean, I voted for it, and it deserves a high placing, but if you go back and have a look at my hyperbolic gushing about Before The Dawn Heals Us in the 2005 thread, you'll realise "I voted for it, and it deserves a high placing" sounds like some seriously faint praise.
I did think I would be ploughing a lonely furrow with a lot of my choices, and I've been proved right ('cos there's no fucking way they're going to be top 10). Given that this thread has introduced me to one thing of utter awesomeness (School of Seven Bells) and another which I've downloaded and am eagerly anticipating getting to listen to (Grouper), I'm going to try to reciprocate by making a strong case for the hidden gems in mine (or just posting them in bold or something, and putting YOU SHOULD BUY THIS, DUDES after them) when we all come to share our lists at the end of the results next week.
Oh, and the 5ive album is fucking great.

I am really, really loving the Grouper record by the way. In terms of mood it reminds me of White Chalk a bit, that feeling of intimacy but with a creepy, uneasy melodic undercurrent.
