lol, Blink's going to win two in a row
― Björk lied (Eric H.), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:39 (fourteen years ago)
I really, really like "Adam's Song." It's sad in the most maudlin way possible, but the "please tell Mom this is not her fault" line gets me every time.
― LimbsKing, Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:41 (fourteen years ago)
^yeah. that being said, it will be hilarious when ATST wins second poll in a row
― thillrer (loves laboured breathing), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:41 (fourteen years ago)
not gonna xpost, since Eric refused to acknowledge that it's not just same band but same song
― thillrer (loves laboured breathing), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:42 (fourteen years ago)
(tho I don't think it's a point lost on anyone)
not to into "Minority" but Warning era Green Day >>> any Green Day since
― some dude, Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:45 (fourteen years ago)
you should just write pre-2000 Green Day >>>>> any Green Day since
― go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:45 (fourteen years ago)
"Otherside" was the only thing from Californication that I kinda liked, so that. That Fuel song got played. the. fuck. out. on the radio back in the early '00s.
― Snowqueen's Icedragon (crüt), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:47 (fourteen years ago)
actually never mind, I'm voting for "All the Small Things." Even though it was on the 1999 poll too.
Hm, I haven't heard Warning but I really like American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. I heard "Longview" the other day. All it did for me was make me feel old.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:49 (fourteen years ago)
I think modern rock radio made a major resurgence in 2004 with American Idiot and Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. (People 10 years younger than me get no pity.)
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:53 (fourteen years ago)
From about 2000 through 2008, most modern rock sucked. After that, some good bands started creeping back onto the top of playlists (Black Keys, Phoenix, Silversun Pickups).
― LimbsKing, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:00 (fourteen years ago)
Three Cheers is a classic to me, but imo the only time Green Day have been true to their fast fun roots in the last 10 years was on the album they released as the Foxboro Hottubs
― some dude, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:01 (fourteen years ago)
I actually enjoyed Silversun Pickups when they came out but there's no way I'd rank them over the best emo of the mid-2000s or the White Stripes' hits from that time.
xpost Well yeah, they're not staying true to their pop-punk roots, which is why I like them.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:05 (fourteen years ago)
Enjoy the Black Keys though.
Oh yeah... forgot to mention the Stripes. My favorite band of the nu-metal hangover era.
― LimbsKing, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:07 (fourteen years ago)
if we wanna talk about the whole decade there's a thread about one of my lorax-loved lists: al ship's top 50 rock singles of the 00s -- which is your favorite?

the only songs that i don't like are the rhcps and green day but it's definitely not the nineties no more
― da croupier, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:13 (fourteen years ago)
Blink 182, "All the Small Things" - Nope.Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Otherside" - I don't remember this.3 Doors Down, "Kryptonite" - LOLPapa Roach, "Last Resort" - It's fun to sing along to.Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Californication" - HATEGreen Day, "Minority" - Meh.Fuel, "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" - Don't know this.

― pplains, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:18 (fourteen years ago)
brb youtubing the fuel song . . .
man "Lazy Eye" is better than anything the White Stripes have ever done imo. total banger.
― Snowqueen's Icedragon (crüt), Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:19 (fourteen years ago)
I was an announcer at a modern rock station on the weekends during this time and remember all of these songs not very fondly at all. It's what made me go, you know? fuckit for the next dozen years and just listen to 80s punk bands all the time.
Franz Ferdinand and Spoon may have been worthwhile bands to get into, but I'm sorry, Fuel ruined it for you guys.
― pplains, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

thank u for making up my mind 4 me
This must be where I got off the bus because I have no idea what any of these songs are. I mean, there is little question that most if not all of these would be familiar to me if I played them. But this is the first poll where I just can't associate music to a single one of the song titles.

all of these songs sans the green day one are croosh
Fuel fans are called "Fuelies" and, in 2010, the band underwent a total lineup change:

yeah "Aeroplane" is secretly one of their best post-BSSM singles. "Warped" isn't bad too. it's just "My Friends" (and probably the rest of the album) that gives that era of the band such a stench.
― kel ler/pharmacists (some dude), Sunday, 3 June 2012 11:33 (fourteen years ago)
calling something a rewrite because it's the same band is lame, they don't really sound alike at all.
that prechorus "too far away" is almost a direct quote from the chorus in Shimmer("too far away/for me to hold"); not the same melody, but def the same accents...which is not the same thing as a 're-write', but is some pretty bald recyclage. Of course it could also be intentionally self-referential (the immediately preceding lyrics are "don't you remember anything I said when I said") Still: lame.
That said, re-listening to this song now, it is a bit better than I remember, though I still like "Otherside" more.
Also I listened to "Parallel Universe", the only song from the first four on Californication that I didn't remember, and it was dope. That album might've aged better than I even thought.
― freebroheem (loves laboured breathing), Sunday, 3 June 2012 14:47 (fourteen years ago)
"Aeroplane" is the worst fucking song, come on now
― that is a weird thing to bring up over lean cuisine (DJP), Sunday, 3 June 2012 15:11 (fourteen years ago)
looking at the one hot minute tracklisting i seem to have excised most of it from my memory. 'aeroplane' is alright, 'my friends' is p dire, i vaguely remember 'walkabout' being terrible, and hey 'pea' is um some kind of charming. the rest, i've got nothing.
― Merdeyeux, Sunday, 3 June 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)
that prechorus "too far away" is almost a direct quote from the chorus in Shimmer("too far away/for me to hold");
To be fair, 1) he's saying "Don't fall away" and 2) the refrain's lyric is lifted straight from Bernie Taupin, so if you want to go after them for laziness, there's a pretty strong angle right there.
― Doctor Casino, Sunday, 3 June 2012 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

poor green day, i've never heard that 3 doors down song but my prediction is that it's worse than 'minority'.
so we have ten lurking papa roach fans who have, ten years on, finally made an impact on ilm.
― Merdeyeux, Monday, 4 June 2012 04:10 (fourteen years ago)
shockingly, the 3DD song is NOT worse than "Minority" (they really should have tied tho)
