I didn't know they had an album out! cool.

I googled their website, it looks like they have one 7" and one LP / CD

the single is great, I have that. totally recommended.

Do these guys not smoke pot/do any drugs? One of my friends offered them a joint after a show and they declined -- when talking about one of Fred's early guitar players freaking out on acid in the DVD, they quickly say something about "why do you think we're so against dope?" I just always pictured them as the crazy old hard-partying couple.

Then again, there's that hardcore survivor, trial by fire vibe. Kinda goes hand in hand with AlAnon, recovery program, etc. By the time you're fifty-something, anyway.

hell yes. first is amazing - not least for their cover of "parchment farm" - and the next two are at least as good. best intro possible.

Weird, really? It is a great comp.
But it's hard to go wrong with anything DEAD MOON.

Not completely sold on Pierced Arrows fwiw.

liked that comp, but it was something of an embarrassment of riches. 5 or 6 albums worth of tracks, all of them good, but the length and sequencing make it something of a chore. i prefer their better albums, though the comp is a good pocket guide.

It was on sale at Sonic Boom in Seattle when I was up their around the time of the Sub Pop 20 thing.

what'd be real sweet: a repress of the third rats LP, in a desperate red, which is probably my fave fred/toody joint and not just for obscurity points. it's got a rad postpunky vibe and every single song is so fucking sick.

I like the first Rats and REALLY REALLY like Intermittent Signals, so In A Desperate Red sounds like it'd be a winner.
I asked Fred about that when Pierced Arrows played at a High School in town a couple years ago and he either didn't hear me (quite possible from what I understand of his hearing troubles) or just didn't feel like talking about it.

it's SO GOOD.
there's tons of great live footage, and their story is really pretty inspiring imo.

i loaned my copy to a friend like three years ago and have not gotten it back.

that's good news, since most of them are OOP.

I just bought all three of the reissues this afternoon. They sound great, infinitely preferable to the shitty MP3s I had before. Wouldn't have thought remastering would make such a difference, hats off to Mr. Timothy Stollenwerk.

Along with the other suspects forcibly re-named Lollipop Shoppe, Fred Cole conjured “You Must Be a Witch,” a ‘60s garage classic, and even a hit. Such music biz vindication didn’t impress guitarist Fred or his bassist wife Toody, who orbited indie rock’s Dead Moon for 20 years, before Pierced Arrows. Fred’s voice can pierce any sound system (or lack thereof). Both of the Coles project psychedelic soul over and through their fractured feedback, buzzing surveillance, Kelly Halliburton’s flying saucer cymbals, and the marching sway of melodies, always ready for more.

Saw Toody in a small bar last night (LaurelThirst Public House in Portland). Great show. She played with a trio + backup singer for a few songs.

An incredibly intense live document of the band’s legendary 20-date first tour of New Zealand. Recorded before an audience of about 40 people in Invercargill (Keith Richards called it “the arsehole of the world”), this is Dead Moon at their most savage, their best live recording, the way they were meant to be heard!

Toody Cole recalled that the band had been invited to open for Nirvana that year, but one of Fred Cole’s ironfast rules was “never cancel a gig you committed to for a better one.” So Dead Moon burned through New Zealand as planned.

I saw at ATP last year too - was intrigued by Albini's write up on them - it made them sound amazingly awful and for some reason the legendary Mission of Burma weren't grabbing me so i went down to check Dead Moon for a few minutes and was blown away.

Don't suppose anyone has any clue about where this Albini writeup appeared or where it may be found these days, do they? I realize it's a very long shot ...

99% certain this is referring to something in the printed programme for that ATP festival.... which sadly was a bit before my time so don't have a copy of that one.
