i really like the whole rustie record but 'after light' is the cut.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

i think you might also like peaking lights btw\

I actually just listened to the album on Grooveshark (the reference to Stereolab piqued my interest). It was v. pleasant but didn't excite me all that much. Possibly a grower, though.

jaymc, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

fwiw, 936 was definitely a warmer weather album for me, particularly loved it while driving from Chicago to Oregon in August

rob, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

the videos from Genre-Specific are pretty amazing/creepy/haunting

the vatican vibes one is pretty witty too - catholicism as video game! with rules and levels and obscure references to eg epiclesis!

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

i just listened to when saints go machine for the first time and it was not what i expected. for some reason i thought it was noisier, and it sounds like straight-up synth pop.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

why do ppl take the time to type out tUnE-yArDs correctly but write w h o k i l l in lowercase even though its obv uppercase on the cover?

P4K: DNP
P&J: 408

J0rdan S., Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:17 (fourteen years ago)

really getting into nicolas jaar. unlike most here, i think i prefer the more abstract sound of SION to the more dance-oriented stuff.

his hands are a dirty fountain through which lives spurt (contenderizer), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

woop woop! Didn't vote for this but so happy it made it!

two lights crew (seandalai), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

just heard some of this for the first time last night. pretty cool

ciderpress, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

Kinda disappointed Genre-Specific Xperience didn't place. It felt like it was gathering steam around here around the time of voting and I expected it to make the countdown.

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

I voted for FAQ in tracks fwiw.

two lights crew (seandalai), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

Cool that Unk Acid made the top ten.

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

wtf is uncle acid & the deadbeats?!?!

Kinda disappointed Genre-Specific Xperience didn't place. It felt like it was gathering steam around here around the time of voting and I expected it to make the countdown.

ehhh, i voted for it but EPs are always gonna have a tough time stacked up against full length albums :(

xps ah. metal. right.

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

Regarding Tune-Yards, flopson put it so much better than I could ever hope to:

listening to tuneyards i feel like i'm in a room at a party when someone youtube dj's obnoxious dubstep or a guy with acoustic guitar getting too into it. like you politey try to ignore it but inside you're reeling at their painful lack of self-awareness, embarrassed for them.

― flopson, Monday, January 23, 2012 10:35 AM (1 week ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

thinking about tuneyards i almost convinced myself that i like music thats more poised/restrained but then i realized, like, i love "mother" and early boredoms and other cathartic or ott singing so that must not be it. compared to john lennon tuneyards shounds like she's singing with loud headphones on, like you can acknowledge that its ecstatic but you also don't feel that you should be privy to it, like walking in on someone masturbating vigorously

Clarke B., Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

Woulda been higher if the reverend hadnt cut it off.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

lex its not really metal, its psychedelic poppy heavy rock

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

ASR you should be grinning right now. I hope you are.

two lights crew (seandalai), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

WELL DONE GUYS. Just missed my ballot, but I'm very happy it's here.

(And yep, it's not metal, but it is rock)

emil.y, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

those flopson posts were great

call all destroyer, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

holding out slim hope for subrosa and corrupted!

omar little, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

not as much as George, he predicted top 10 at the start!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

I've never dipped into Tuneyards that much, kind of sounds like the kind of thing Ponytail did well occasionally.

Cragenham Craig (Craigo Boingo), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

ehhh, i voted for it but EPs are always gonna have a tough time stacked up against full length albums :(

I voted for hella EPs including my #1. :(

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

Oh shit, this list's gone bonkers

Phibes Kartel (NickB), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

also voted for the al-Qadiri EP

Uncle Acid fans: any particular track to start with?

rob, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

aw thanks, guy xp's

flopson, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

Eh, it's metal enough to be metal for people who don't spend any of their time listening to metal. That would be like arguing that Robyn isn't pop and Britney is. xps

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

Awesome! My #3!

Lex there's a thread I just made for this and other psych/pop-art metal albums...

Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

Sweet. Us rockers can stop whining now, the crossover album of choice made it. Lots of other great stuff that would appeal to those on the metal fence like SubRosa, Blood Ceremony, The Devil's Blood, Elder and Graveyard, but just glad to see one make it.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

I hoped by starting Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Lust (One of the best rock albums this year) I'd get ilxors into the band but never dreamed it would go top 10. just WOW.

It really is an album that anyone who likes poppy rock could get into. Nothing to put anyone off at all. Might even be melodic enough for geir!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

Didn't particularly like this album, but it's good seeing the list get nutso.

Phibes Kartel (NickB), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

rob start with the youtubes on that thread?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

Great to see Uncle Acid place!

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

Another victory for outloud room btw

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

top ten!!

La Lechera, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

i would have voted for it if i'd heard it in time, dug into it on the metal results thread.

omar little, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

BTW if there's anything on the list that needs it to be understood, that Tim Hecker needs to be listened to REALLY FLIPPING LOUD

Phibes Kartel (NickB), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

I feel like half the stuff that I don't recognize is Outloud fare.

9. Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats — Blood Lust (696 points, 19 votes, two first place votes

FUCK YES! DAM was saying it was gonna place, but i figured that for wishful thinking. biggest (and happiest) surprise of the countdown. the run from "i'm here to kill you" through "13 candles" to "ritual knife" is probably my favorite quarter-hour of music released this year.

his hands are a dirty fountain through which lives spurt (contenderizer), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

cool, just listened to I'll Cut You Down. Not totally sold yet--this isn't really my thing these days--but it's well done and I would definitely be into anything these people art-directed

rob, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

hmm, kinda think I need to hear this at better than youtube quality. is there much bass on the record?

rob, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

I think some of you might like drugs a moneys thread Poptimists get into ...METAL?!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

like you can acknowledge that its ecstatic but you also don't feel that you should be privy to it, like walking in on someone masturbating vigorously

this metaphor repulses me so much i can't even begin to
